12-2 clock

• In the ‘what the heck?’ category, I woke up way too early this morning. Let’s just say it was before 5 am. I was too hot – it stayed relatively mild outside last night – and I was congested. We need to get a humidifier, STAT. Anyway, I tried and tried to go back to sleep and I couldn’t and after what seemed like hours of trying, I gave up and got up, knowing that Scout would have to be let outside very soon.

When one or both of us is sleepless and we’re trying to figure out what time it is, we try to get a read on the amount of traffic going down our road. There was no traffic when I first woke up. That doesn’t bode well for the rest of my day.

• I took a day off from crocheting yesterday. I had to run some errands and, quite frankly, my hands needed a rest. They’re tired. I’ve been at our local post office a lot lately, sending scarves to one and all. Now I’m working on some special orders, awaiting another delivery of yarn. Thanks to all who have ordered a scarf! I hope you like them!

• We are now watching the final season – season 11 – of Frasier. We have watched every episode, in order, and we’re already in mourning. There are been a lot of wonderful comedies on television, but I think I have to vote for Frasier as the best. Incredibly witty and smart writing, with double entrendres, references to all sorts of literature and drama, moments of pure, unadulterated farce, brilliant acting by everyone in that gifted ensemble. There is no other show I can recall that makes me laugh out loud as much as this one.

• Here’s some exciting news: I got a case for my new iPhone yesterday. It’s exciting to me, at least, because I’ve been extra cautious with the phone since it arrived, treating it with kid gloves, until I could get out and buy a case.

If it’s possible to fall in love with a phone, I’m truly smitten.

9-4 dollhouse late afternoon

• As of today (this may change) I have no desire to decorate the dollhouse for Christmas. And it’s usually the first place I decorate. I know where the Christmas tree that I painstakingly built last year is. It’s in a box in the closet in the spare room. But do I want to pull it out? No.

Sigh. This is just the way it is this year. I have to accept it.

• We are going to make the trip to IKEA in the next couple of days to buy a desk for yours truly. And we’re going to buy some white paint and paint the spare room. This house was flipped and every room is painted in the same sort of off-white/cream color. It’s okay, I’m used to it. But we decided we want white and bright in that space, so I’m hoping that we’ll be painting this weekend. The one thing I am motivated to do (there’s not much else) is create our little work space.

• Don made an apple pie yesterday. You can see a picture of it on my Instagram feed. It’s his first foray into baking a pie. It was delicious! He tells me he wants to make more pies. This is good, but it is also not-so-good for my waistline. And, wait a minute, Don! I’m  the baker in this house. You’re  the cook. You’re encroaching on my territory. I’m not so sure I like this pie-making-baking stuff.

Be that as it may, I’m off to have a piece of pie for breakfast.

Happy Wednesday.

the new desk how exciting that will be. That space will be awesome when it is done. A new phone case, very cool. I had switched to Samsung a few years ago…nope not doing it for me back to IPHONE later this year. Should have known…should have stuck with Apple. Christmas decorating,,….just do what you feel and somehow that will just be enough ths year. This year my thing is to take each day of December up to the holidays and just find a small bit of joy in my day…that will be enough for me this year. Give it a try. I bet that piece of apple pie enjoyed with coffee this morning could be your bit of joy for today.

I’m eating a piece of pie right now, Cindy.

I always liked Frasier too for the literary references and plain old FUNNY humor in the show. I was crazy about Cheers from the first episode and Frasier was one of the best characters ever on that show. Have fun with the den project. It will be just the thing to turn over a new leaf and create a new environment for yourself.

I agree with others just do what feels right to you this Christmas! I am excited that you will get a new desk and get the spare room ready to enjoy as a work space. I can’t imagine anyone who is lucky enough to have one of your scarves not enjoying it (I love mine). It’s raining today so I’m home and working on some cleaning up around here. Hugs to all of you and yes pie for breakfast is the BEST!

Oh…just saw the pic of the pie…looks scrumptious! I’m excited you’ll be getting your desk soon! IKEA is always a dangerous place for me….I always tend to bring at least one extra thing home, that wasn’t in the plans…always! Our closest one is 2 hours away in Chicago…so, thankfully, I’m not tempted very often. Guess I’m just not a very disciplined shopper! I put out my MIL’s ceramic Christmas tree yesterday, guess I’m doing my decorating one piece at a time this year…and that’s okay! ;)

Pie, especially warmed up apple pie, is the best breakfast! I like to melt cheddar cheese over my slice just to get that other food group into the “meal”. Hope your office transformation project goes smoothly and quickly!

I like your photo of the dollhouse!

A slice of cold apple pie with a cup of hot coffee is one of my favourite meals. Now I’m hungry just thinking about it, but we are being terribly disciplined this month so that we can partake of my sister’s homemade peppermint bark on Christmas Eve. I tried making it one year, but sadly it resulted in a broken food processor and peppermint dust everywhere. Now we eagerly anticipate the yearly treat that my sister kindly mails us every December.

My parents’ home was always the gathering place for family (and vast quantities of extended family) at Christmas, so everyone felt at a bit of a loss the first Christmas after they were both gone. It’s been four years and everyone seems now to have adopted a stay-at-home-with-immediate-family-only approach to Christmas. Not a particularly sad thing, just different.

      I love peppermint bark!

It’s been hard for us to adjust to Christmases here in New York without family – as Don’s family is in CA and mine is in Florida, Illinois and Michigan. It is, as you say, just different. It’s fine, but we do miss the sense of a larger, extended family on Christmas Day.

Frasier!! Seriously, one of the best shows ever. Although someone above mentioned West Wing… and, oh! how we loved that show, as well.
I think you are finding your own way through this season and each decision you are making is absolutely the very best one. And maybe 2 weeks from now you may alter a decision or two, and that will also be the right thing to do. One day, one step at a time. And how wonderful to have Don making pies for you as you move along!! ?
Oh, fun…a trip to IKEA! Our nearest one, as Donnamae said, is in Chicago. Always treasures to find at IKEA. A white room is so pretty, especially when you add in some color, which we know you will do! Can’t wait to see your desk. I’m sure the new office is a project you are truly looking forward to take on.
I hope you have a good day ~ and if the spirit moves you ~ take a short (guilt-free) nap! It can really help on those days when we rise too early. Or…have some hot chocolate!! Hot chocolate is also good for the soul!! ♡

I am happy to hear that you like your new phone. David bought me an iPhone 6 Plus for my birthday last summer and I am loving it too. At first I was uncertain about the larger size, but David encouraged me to get it. Now I really love it and am happy to have the extra size. It still fits in my pocket when I walk Bentley in the evening so all is right with our world. The camera is great too! I am a total Mac girl. About the Christmas decorating. Let it go. Last year we had a tree delivered and all I could manage to get up were the lights. Baby steps Claudia. I’ll be here to remind you.

It is so weird how you somehow tap into what I am thinking and doing. I cannot get motivated to decorate for Christmas either. All the people I used to celebrate with are gone so Christmas is mostly sad although, I will find some joy.

The odd thing is that I am motivated to paint too. We started prepping the bathroom walls an as soon as I decide on a color the fun will begin.

    Happy painting

I love how you’re all territorial about your baking! That’s so cute. My mother was completely in charge of our kitchen most of the time, but she wanted my Dad’s expertise in several areas. NO ONE could cook breakfast like my Dad. Ham and eggs, pancakes, French toast, your name it. If they awarded PhDs for breakfast, my Dad would have one. From Harvard. His French fries were famous too, because he was so fussy. Perfectly-done, never too much salt and piping hot every time. There were 8 of us, so he’d make several batches during a meal so they were always wickedly-hot when we ate them. And like most Dads, he was the family “Grill Sergeant” – and our grill was used year-round. Even once a week or so in the Winter, despite the amount of snow present.

PS – Claudia, you might want to try just bowls of water before buying a humidifier. I was having nosebleeds nearly every day, sometimes multiple times a day, early in 2014 due to an extremely-dry apartment. I was about to buy two compact humidifiers [for the rooms in which I spend most of my time] when the PA at my doctor’s office suggested just adding a bowl of water in each room, and since the first day I did that I haven’t had a single nosebleed. From the very first day. I’m using two decorative china bowls I already had [one is Fiestaware]. About a quart or so in size. I refill them when they start to look a little low, approximately every 2-3 weeks. But hardly notice them the rest of the time. One is behind a silk flower arrangement on my bedside table, and the other is on the floor in the dining room under my hutch. A very simple – and inexpensive – solution to what had been a frustrating problem. And no humidifiers to clean either. I just add the bowls to my very infrequent dishwasher loads for a good solid scrubbing.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
