We’ve just had three very, very hot days and, today, the heat wave broke. We have no A/C installed this early in the spring, so we were feeling pretty miserable. And frankly, it’s too early to install the A/C, especially when the temps will be much lower over the next couple of weeks. Anyway, we had a box fan positioned in the bedroom window and it ran on high all night long and we were okay. And in true crazy spring fashion, Sunday and Monday nights will bring below freezing temperatures. Go figure.
As a result of all of this, I’m holding off on clearing the rest of the garden beds, and I’m definitely holding off on buying more porch plants. That will resume on Tuesday.

The grass is suddenly very green, the leaf buds have appeared on the maples and the ash and the hickory. These three days of heat have resulted in everything beginning to pop.
By the way, we have an ash tree down near the street that popped up many years ago (during our time here.) Most of the ash trees in this area were lost to the emerald ash borer. The gentleman who has pruned and removed some of our trees specializes in maintaining the health of at-risk trees and he comes once a year to treat the ash. He has some sort of special liquid medicine that he pours into the base of the tree. He’s been treating the ash for about 5 years and we are thrilled at how well it’s doing. we just received his annual notice, so he’ll be stopping by sometime in the next month.

I predict that we’ll find ourselves mowing the lawn for the first time sometime next week. The grass is really getting tall. We always wait a bit to mow for the first time because that’s what you should do in early spring.
Okay, my friends. I’m going to prune a bit more on both of our hydrangeas today.
Stay safe.
Happy Friday.

My Mom always said to wait until their anniversary (May 15th) to plant our annuals here in Illinois so that is what I have always done. It’s so nice to see the blooms that are starting to pop up on the trees or in the parks. I saw some bluebells the other day and they always make me smile.
Have a nice weekend, Claudia!
Thank you, Ellen.
You, too!
Stay safe.
Our lawns need mowing here too, but that may wait another week or at least a few days — it’s still so wet out. You are so lucky to still have your ash tree. He must be a miracle worker!
So far, he is!
Stay safe, Jeanie.
i sure understand not liking freezing temperatures this time of year and with your love of garden, but i am glad you’re getting a break from the heat that’s arrived too soon. and you get more time to do other things you enjoy (like working on the beacon hill, and reading) and rest.
similar weather here. this morning it was 64 degrees on our walk. tomorrow? 34. spring is like that!
going to work on a missions fundraiser at church this afternoon and i am so pleased to be able to also take in a prayer shawl (knit for a soon-to-be high school graduate). it’s about two and a half feet wide by six feet long … a lot of knitting on larger, longer needles that i don’t love working on … so am glad it’s done and ready to go. :)
hope you, don and every one else have a nice weekend! stay safe.
kathy
Thank you so much, Kathy.
Stay safe.
I couldn’t believe the heat wave you experienced out East. You’re right…too much, too fast. While you were enjoying the ‘heat’, we were under siege by three days of intense storms. I couldn’t believe the winds…many trees down. And then there was the hail….i thought for sure our skylight was doomed….but it held. We had a rest day yesterday, but more storms are coming our way today. The southern half of our state is under seige. Mother Nature is angry!
The good news is that everything is green again. The leaves are starting to emerge, and daffodils are blooming. Have fun trimming the hydrangeas! ;)
I’m so sorry about the storms. Someone I follow had trees down in her backyard from all the winds.
Thanks so much, Donnamae.
Stay safe.
The temperature changes are not as extreme as in my area as yours, Claudia. We won’t have very high temps this early in the year but we are alternating with a few dry sunny beautiful days with intense rainy ones. After a week of dry, we’ll get rain at the beginning of this coming week.
Since I’m retired, I can choose to stay home during wet weather but I can’t work in my yard. At least I save a bit from not having to water my yard. We’re not officially in drought but I’m not foolish enough to have the irrigation system on when Mother Nature takes care of that. I see neighbors who still water their lawn during intense rain.
Pleased you have someone taking care of your ash regularly.
Do you prefer very hot weather or very cold weather?
Neither.
Mid 70s is fine for me.
Stay safe, Wendy.
Spring has certainly sprung where you are. Mother nature can be very fickle. Hop you n Don have a lovely weekend. Hugs, Elaine
THank you, Elaine – the same to you.
Stay safe.
Lovely to see Spring blossom. My Morello cherry tree has only started flowering this week. It’s very late due to the rain and cool temperatures.
I am just going to settle down and watch one of my favourite films – Whistle Down the Wind starring Hayley Mills. It starts at 9pm.
Happy Friday
I love Hayley Mills! I hope you enjoyed the movie, Dee Dee.
Stay safe.
My poor ash tree. My neighbor couldn’t keep hers alive either. Guess we’ll try another tree again. Maybe plant in a 6 yr old established tree this year.
I wish I had extra money so I could buy the doll I love. Shes a dutch blondie made in the Netherlands. Wish my hair was blond. 6 blond kids, one brown haired one – me. I thought i didn’t look really dutch.
It snowed here this week!
Probably one last bit of snow for you, Irene.
Stay safe.
