Remembering

May 4, 2023 at 9:09 am by Claudia

Sorry I didn’t get around to answering your comments yesterday. I was tired from mowing the day before. If you’ll forgive me, sometimes – but rarely – I just can’t do it. I’ll be better today.

I worked on the puzzle quite a bit, we went grocery shopping – Don came along so he could get out of the house – and then we listened to Gordon Lightfoot the rest of the day. It was so emotional for both of us.

“The Minstrel of the Dawn” reminds Don of the time when Winston died, when he kept playing it over and over to deal with his grief. It brought tears to his eyes.

“Too Late for Praying” always makes me cry. It is one of my favorites. During the night, I woke up coughing and couldn’t get back to sleep and that song kept playing in my head.

“Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “Sundown,” “Early Morning Rain,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Beautiful,” – the list goes on and on. I distinctly remember seeing him in concert when he had just finished writing “Beautiful.” None of us had heard it before. He walked to the grand piano, sat down, and with only the piano accompanying his incredible voice, we heard it for the first time.

His voice. How singular and beautiful it was.  There was no one like him.

As Don says, “His songs break my heart.”

We are immersing ourselves in the glory of his words and music. From my dorm room in college to now and beyond, his music was the soundtrack of my life.

I’ll say it again: Rest in Peace, dear one.

Update from Brenda:

I am fine now
Long story
Problematic trying to post responses
I have stopped reading and getting to post on blogs for now
Maybe later

So we know Brenda is okay.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Do you have her last name? If so, try googling her name. I pray she’s ok! Thank you for checking on her.

I do, and I’ve googled it. She lives in Palm Harbor, FL (near my sister) and nothing comes up.

I just went through all her comments and can’t find the one I was thinking of.

      Thanks, Darlene.

      Stay safe.

I’ve always liked “On Susan’s Floor” , “Pussywillows, Cattails”, and for some weird reason, “Old Dan’s Records”. Probably cause it was so different. “Steel rail blues” —we know the list is pretty endless. I’m a sucker for story songs. Kinda the point of singing.

Lovely to hear your thoughts and memories on Gordon Lightfoot and his music. He’ll always be remembered. Nice to get out even just to grocery shop. Hope you can find Brenda’s daughter on-line. Good luck with your search. Hugs, Elaine

Yes to Gordon Lightfoot. I listened to his music endlessly through my 20s and can hear him singing now in my mind as I write this. “If you could read my mind” of course!

another nice tribute to a man with a wonderful voice and some heartbreakingly-lovely songs.

very glad, relieved that brenda wrote in. :) glad you had another way to reach out to her. thanks to you for doing that and to brenda for checking in.

love that drawing of your scout (another great portrait, shanna!) and your photo that don had printed and framed for you!

had a late night last night, had a dream that was so weird it was distressing, got up a couple hours earlier than usual and just now got home. going to do a couple quick things, then try to get some sleep.

hope you all had a good day and night!

    stay safe.

I’m acquainting myself with Gordon Lightfoot and he does have a moving, wonderful voice. And his lyrics…I honestly don’t know how I was so ignorant about his tuff. I always had music playing in my office that I shared with shifts of student workers. We all talked about and played our favorites. Now I’m home all day I do miss dancing around with those great college students who worked for me. Asking the cat what she wants to hear just isn’t quite the same.
    Take care,
    K.

Music helps, doesn’t it? I don’t play it nearly enough around here, so listening Gordon this week has been lovely.

      Stay safe, Kay.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
