Happy New Year!
It’s the symbolism of the whole thing isn’t it? Because time, as we know it, is a human construct, as are the calendar and clocks by which we measure time.
I can’t go any further with that concept or my head will spin.
Anyway, a new year equals a fresh start, a reset. No resolutions for this girl, just an ongoing challenge to be a good person. If I can swing that, I’m happy. I always have goals I’m working toward and they are ongoing, new year or no. And dreams….they’re in there, too.
I made it to midnight. Glory be. Don made a wonderful dinner. We ended up watching Live from Lincoln Center where the New York Philharmonic’s menu for the night was all Gershwin. Gershwin is my favorite composer, so I was thrilled. As was Don. Then we watched Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room, an event that celebrated the American Songbook. Sigh. More happiness. It ended up being the perfect New Year’s Eve.
We might have had a few Mallomars. And some sparkling apple cider.
And a kiss or two.
What? Another Jane Austen/Penguin Classic?
I succumbed. It just seemed to me that Pride and Prejudice was rather lonely up there on the shelf. Yes, of course, Shakespeare was there, and he’s pretty nifty, but P & P needed some sisterly company.
I had to.
Oh, so pretty.
Girls, there will be more friends coming throughout 2015. I promise.
The tree is still up. We’re not ready to take it down yet. Too lovely. So it stays.
Our next event here at the cottage is this coming Sunday, January 4th.
Someone has a birthday.
The words ‘Sweet Sixteen’ come to mind.
Happy Thursday.

I watched Lincoln Center as well…Wonderful entertainment…Went to bed with the TV on, fell asleep and woke up in time to see everything drop :) I somehow usually do..!! Happy 2015 to you and Don..Scoutie too !
Claudia says
Happy New Year to you, Missy! Here’s to a wonderful year ahead.
Beverly says
Happy New Year to you and Don, and a big Happy Birthday to Scout.♥
I have those Shakespeare volumes.
Claudia says
Happy New Year to you and yours, Beverly!
The Shakespeare two volume set was a gift from a fellow blogger, Judy. We really love them.
Carol Ann Hood says
Scout looks so good. Give her a kiss from me as a pre-birthday wish.
Carol Ann
Claudia says
I will, Carol Ann.
Donnamae says
Funny…I made it to midnight too! Glad you had a Gershwin filled evening…those are the best. Our day today is traditional…plenty of football…with family of course, and probably too much food. Hopefully I’ll be successful with only having a taste of everything, instead of a portion. That’s my intention today. Have a good one! ;)
Claudia says
I will. You, too, Donnamae!
Anne says
Happy New Year! Always fun to celebrate those birthdays! It has been a long while since I stopped by. Face Book seems so popular these days but I will always enjoy my blog and the wonderful friends that share it with me. Enjoy 2015 and good to see you here.
Claudia says
Facebook is a place I enjoy, but only for a few minutes each day. I’d rather be blog visiting, I guess. Happy New Year, Anne!
Tana says
Wishing the three of you much love, joy, prosperity and the best of health for 2015!
Claudia says
We wish the same to you, Tana!
Chris k in Wisconsin says
The best of nights ~ good music and a few treats. We have a bowl game to watch today and that is about it. Sounds good to me! I actually DID make it to midnight. Hubs was snoring,,, not sure why it mattered, but I did it! Hope you have a good day. Peace and joy to you in 2015…. and wishes of very little snow. :-)
Claudia says
Amen to that, Chris. We might get a little Saturday night into Sunday, but it’s going to eventually turn into rain. So it looks like we dodged a bullet again!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I’m glad you have two of the new books :) and more to come. I watched a movie, Jane Eyre, and enjoyed it. Kissed Charlie and went to bed! A good New Year’s Eve for me. Happy, content and quiet!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Love Jane Eyre. What a beautiful story it is. Happy New Year, Linda.
Janet in Rochester says
Sounds like you had a sublime New Year’s Eve. That PBS evening was great, wasn’t it? I love Gershwin too, and have been a fan of Michael Feinstein’s ever since my mom and I saw him with the RPO [Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra] years ago. Please wish Scoutie a very happy birthday from me. Sweet 16, that’s wonderful! I’m sure she’ll have a very special day. Take care and enjoy your day!
Claudia says
The PBS evening ended up being an absolutely perfect way to spend New Year’s Eve. Happy New Year, Janet!
Chel @ Sweetbriar Dreams says
We saw the New Year in by watching the fireworks on the TV being set off around the London Eye! How I would have loved to have been one of the ticket holders. Maybe next year! Happy New Year to you xx
Claudia says
Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Happy New Year, Chel!
Melanie says
Sounds like you had a lovely NY Eve. Our night basically turned out to be like any other night, as Brian had to get up at 3:45 a.m. to start work today (he’s on some new shifts as of January 1st and neither of us are happy about that), so he went to bed early last night. And I’m really sick (first time I’ve been this sick in years), so I ended up going to bed early too, though I couldn’t sleep because my head was pounding so bad, my nose wouldn’t stop running, and I couldn’t stop coughing. Poor Brian – I probably kept him up half the night. I just might have to sleep in Tim’s room tonight. Anyway, I was supposed to go to a friend’s house for NY Eve – she was just having some girlfriends over for food and games – but obviously, that didn’t happen. Brian and I did watch the movie, Nebraska on Netflix.
Claudia says
Poor Brian – those hours must be hard to deal with! And poor you! I sure hope you feel better soon, Melanie! Nebraska is on our To Watch list. Happy New Year!
Vicki says
Ah, sweet and beautiful girl she is, that Scout. So glad the weather has been somewhat more hospitable for her…and you. I just read yesterday that you can get a DNA test done on a mixed-breed dog to see what their mix is, and I think I’m going to inquire for our shepherd. I was surfing around yesterday and started looking at web photos…and it’s possible she’s got retriever in her, which sort of made sense. Might be fun if not too expensive.
I agree. P&P needed a friend. OMG, what a gorgeous cover. Can’t wait for mine…
There IS something about January 1…the actual date… and wanting to start a year off on a different/better footing which makes a goal or resolution seem somehow more ‘official’ to me, which is something I need.
So glad you enjoyed your evening bridge into the new year. I think we had two bursts of fireworks and that was about it; it was just too darn cold for wimpy Southern Californians to be out on a night which did bring us our first true freeze, although it wasn’t a hard-hard freeze (bird bath froze over, though…poor feral kitties this morning, I feared they would get their tongues stuck trying to lap up iced-over water in it til I could get out there…they looked at me so curiously, like “What the heck is that?”…some of them have never witnessed frost and ice yet).
Claudia says
I remember being a wimpy Southern Californian, Vicki. And, frankly, Don STILL is. He was born and raised there, so he feels the cold much more than I do. Happy New Year!
Vicki says
Expand on that sometime! I’ve always wondered how a beachy West Coast person, particularly a Southern Californian, transitions to a 4-season locale. I’ve pondered how I wouldn’t know what to do in winter…if I was caught out in it, if power failed, if pipes froze. I mean, I don’t know how you live in ice and snow, day in and day out…how it affects your everyday life; how you can get things done when your normal activities are hampered by that kind of weather. I remember reading in my husband’s family histories of how they’d run a rope/line from the house to the barn so that in white-outs in farm country, when they still had to get to the animals to feed and care for them (milk the cows, etc.), the farmer had something to hold on to and not get disoriented in the white, hostile world…something like a snow blindness of which they spoke. My husband left the Midwest when he was a teen so doesn’t remember too many of his parents’ responsibilities. I imagine you have to store up a lot of groceries/sundries for when you can’t easily get out to a store, etc. Not to mention heating oil? My husband said, back in the day, they used coal for the furnace. I have no idea what I’m talking about; our furnace here is natural gas with electrical ignition. I was blogging once with a transplant to the East Coast and she said she might have made some critical mistakes, living in a white winter, were it not for her partner who had lived there all of his life and knew instinctively how to ready for blizzards, or just how to live and be in a snowy, wintry place. Future post…start with Don! How much does he miss the ocean? San Diego is so particularly sunny, dry and gorgeous. I love it there. I’d thought once of moving to La Jolla or even Oceanside/Carlsbad. Happy NY to you, too.

Here we go in a New Year of blogging and sharing our mutual interests of collecting, reading and daily life…which you have inspired me to do…blog daily this year. I read your blog daily and as you know haven’t commented often enough. I hope to remedy that this year and become a more active commenter.
Ringing in the New Year was more of jingle at our house. Surprisingly our part of Texas is covered in a sheet of ice, so going out was out! Since the 31st is HiHoney’s birthday, we toasted with hot coffee, coffee cake and my solo of Happy Birthday. Your Gershwin and Mallomars sounds like a perfect New Year beginning. To that I add my greeting….Happy New Year, Claudia and Don.

Sue, so lovely to hear from you. No apologies are necessary re commenting. I fear I have turned into a very remiss commenter (if that makes sense.) I’m trying very hard to be better…. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Debbie in Oregon says
I stopped with New Year resolutions long ago, like you my “resolutions” and dreams are ongoing. But I do enjoy the feeling of a new year, and all of the possibilities that come with it. I hope 2015 is a wonderful year for you Claudia … as well for Don and Scout!
Claudia says
The same wishes from us to you, Debbie. Here’s to a wonderful 2015!

Those book spines are beautiful!! They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but those are lovely! Jen

I’m with you! The season flies by MUCH too quickly, and I have no intention of taking MY tree down either!… Wishing you and yours a blessed and very Happy New Year! ~tina

It looks like the tree will be up through Sunday – we have to have some sparkly lights for Scout’s birthday! Happy New Year, Tina.
Pat says
Happy new year! We had A quiet evening not even a special supper. We are very light. I started my meal for today to take to my daughters house-and got things ready for our gathering. We stayed up late– but enjoyed our quiet time together.
