Rust

August 22, 2018 at 10:11 am by Claudia

This old glider has been through a lot with us. Don found it for sale on the street in San Diego for $25 and he drove home with it in the back of his Blazer. It sat on our porch for 6 years, then it moved out east with us and sat on the ground in front of our rental cottage (we didn’t have a covered porch) and then it moved here. We’ve let it rust, partly because I’m too impatient to remove the rust and repaint, but mostly because we like the rust. We’ve had it for 22 or 23 years. It’s been a source of comfort for me many times. Sitting and rocking and pondering and healing – all of that has happened on this glider.

I cleaned out our office yesterday. Don has piles of bags full of stuff from ETM – opening night presents and notes and things from his dressing room. It was getting too hard to get to the window, so I sorted it all out and put it in one bag. I hung the hat he wore for so many performances on the wall, along with that picture I took of him taking his final bow. I had it enlarged on mounting board and gave it to him shortly after he moved home.

I cleaned off my desk which was full of stuff that was in the desk at the base of the stairs  that we moved to storage. It’s tax deduction time for us again (we always file an extension) and we have to get it done by the end of the week and I need a clean surface to tackle this job (which I absolutely hate doing.)

Here are the girls. The one on the left came from Australia this week. The one on the right is the one I purchased from a lady in Canada  The eyes on #2 are a bit wonky, but I sort of like them that way. The S in “Snow White” is partly missing. #1 has a clearer “Snow White” and the eye paint is intact. These were hand painted and I find the differences in their facial expressions fascinating. I like them both! They may be twins, but…let’s say their fraternal twins.

Both of them are residing in the cubby cabinet.

We’re having dinner with Rick, Doug, and one of our former students tonight. James was in the first class that Rick and I chose for the program in San Diego and remains one of my favorite people. I’m really looking forward to it.

I guess it’s time to gather up my receipts!

Happy Wednesday.

I love the way the one on the right is looking at the one on the left and the one on the left looks guilty of something! Fraternal twins, for sure.

Very cute girls. Sounds like you plan to keep them both.

Twins can be at odds with one another whether identical or fraternal. My brothers are identicals but one is right-handed while the other is a leftie. Their personalities are different too, one is extrovert and his twin is introverted. But otherwise they are so alike that even their children have gotten them mixed up.

        hej, claudia …

if you are interested in the topic of twins, consider reading about “the jims study”, a fascinating article about twins who have some incredible life similarities despite being adopted at birth and raised in different homes.

for something else about twins, there is an interesting – and ultimately very sad – nonfiction book called “the silent twins” about twins who shared a secret language and parents who enabled some very enmeshed behaviors in their daughters.

She has done the same thing to me as well. I guess I didn’t fully appreciate her until her twin arrived!

Love the Snow White’s and how different they are. Hand painted makes them so unique. Ugh to the paperwork. I’ve been gathering papers for Mom’s financial adviser and setting up some meetings to make some choices on her behalf. Trying to understand everything as I take over more and more of her affairs. BUT….the sun is shining so that makes me happy! Hugs!

I am not good at understanding anything that is wrapped in legalese, Linda! Or numbers. As in taxes.

oh, best wishes on the taxes … getting the stuff done and that the numbers are in your favor.
am sure dinner with friends will feel especially great for having the taxes done … enjoy!

glad you have that old favorite glider for comfort and enjoyment. i can see why you’d make the effort to bring it clear across the country … it’s beautiful, too. i have a rusty old lawn chair in my living room, too, and love it.

    happy wednesday to all.

Kathy, it has been great fun for me just being the twins’ sibling. If you and your twin sister are like my brothers, you are blessed to know there’s almost another you…who else can know you better? That’s awesome!

          hi, eve.

          thank you.

glad you have fun as a sibling of twins. did you always feel that way … that it’s fun to be a sibling to twins? i have an older brother and he has always handled well the extra attention that society often gives to twins. the credit for that, of course, goes to him and to our parents … they raised and have always treated us three kids as three individuals, shut down the comparison questions like “which twin is smarter?”, never fussed over us as twins, etc. and for that, for all of my family i thank God!

my sister and i are very close and she is one of the best people i know. if i am anything like her, our parents and brother, then i am having a good day. :)

yes, i am proud of my family and grateful for my upbringing! wish everyone had it so good. thanks for letting me brag a bit about them.

Good luck with the taxes- I do not envy you the task, but hope you enjoy the sense of accomplishment when it’s done

oh I like #2 too! the wonky eyes give her character!
I used to know twins once when I was 7. for some reason I could always tell them apart.
I thought it would be fun to be a twin! but they hated always dressing the same. their mother liked that part I guess. :)
the only bad thing about allowing rust… it keeps eating away and finally destroys. but I love that glider too. and the pillows. I can imagine reading a good book there! xo

Since we’ve had the glider for so long and it’s hanging in there, we won’t worry about the rust!

We have to. We have so many residuals from long ago tv and film jobs and it’s almost impossible to get all the stuff together by April 15th.

Those Snow White egg cups are adorable. They could be identical twins. My sister and I are identical, but we do have a few differences.

I love that rust too Claudia…Twins run in my family…twin nieces…twin cousins…twin great niece and nephew…My one sister had twins and years later her youngest daughter had twins…a cousin’s daughter had twins a few years ago….also when I was pregnant they thought I was going to have twins as my son’s father is a twin and his mom had two sets of twins!!!….The funny thing is that none of the twins ever had twins…Very confusing at times but also fun…lol!…I hope that your dinner was delicious 😋…

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
