Coldish and windy – it was windy all night long. I can hear the wind chimes and the sound of the flapping tarps covering various items on the porch. I, of course, want to get going out in the yard, but as is the case every year, it isn’t time yet. Just raking all the Item 4 (gravel) that is now on the grass instead of the driveway will take days.
By the way, the Boston Fern that I overwintered has done extremely well inside! No one is more surprised than me. In fact, it does a little better inside than out. Aren’t they supposed to prefer shade and lots of humidity? Well, we have a lot of light and very little humidity. The house is winter-heat-dry. Every time I look at it, I shake my head with wonder. I’m glad I decided to bring it inside for the winter. All I’ve been doing, by the way, is keeping the soil moist, and once a week or so, misting it. That’s it. I’ll be happy to transfer it outside, though, as it’s taking up all of the available space on the kitchen table.
I love many things about this pew, but this carved leaf is perhaps my favorite. It’s so lovely and unexpected. I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t hear Don say, “I love this pew!” He thinks it finishes off the living room and I think he’s right. It will be truly finished off when we get the new sofa and find a rug that we like. But that’s weeks away.
Today, work around the house, maybe some work on the dollhouse, and starting a book that I have to review next month.
That’s all for now. Sorry I have nothing momentous to report!
Happy Saturday.

Your Monstera looks to be doing well, too! Kudos to you on the fern. I tried to overwinter one a few years ago…it didn’t even make it til Christmas.
I do want to get outside and do something…anything….but, we had frost on the rooftops this morning, so it’s still a bit early around here. But…I have lots of plans for this year. I’m just waiting for Mother Nature to give me the okay. I don’t envy the gravel raking that you have to do…that hurts my back just thinking about it. I assume that all has to be done before any mowing can start. Ugh.
We are off to see my best friend today…nice day for a drive to Milwaukee. Hope you enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Yes, exactly. Has to be done before I can mow. (It’s in the big garden bed, too.) Thanks, Donnamae.

It’s laundry day for me. Nothing exciting to report. I love that pew and so glad you got it.
Claudia says
It seems like every day is laundry day for me! At the very least 4 out of 7!

Have a good Saturday doing house work, doll house work, and reading, Claudia. I’m deeply immersed in sorting and organizing print photos. I just took apart my in-laws albums to put the photos into a photo friendly album. And I have to write approximate dates , names and place on the backs, so my daughters know who the people are. They’ve met many of the relatives, but when they were much younger and the entire grandparent generation is now gone, and about 1/4 of my generation.
I’m also going to draw them a family tree as far back as I know, which is just to their great-great-grandparent generation. It will be difficult on my husband’s mother’s side, since she had six siblings and all had two or three children and their children have one or two or more children. Compared to my mom’s side…one bachelor brother! It will be a lop-sided family tree!
Claudia says
So nice of you to take on that family tree. My dad had 5 siblings and my mom was an only child. Same kind of lopsidedness!

The carving is exquisite. And kudos on the plant. I kill anything I bring inside.
Claudia says
I remain surprised that it’s doing so well. This morning, it looks positively gorgeous!

You are so lucky with the fern. I tried to winter several over for a few years, but by Thanksgiving each year I couldn’t stand the mess all over from the browning leaves falling to the floor.
It is a lovely day here! Sunshine and 54*. We took a ride into our daughter’s in Madison and visited for a bit. Fun to walk the yard in her new house and hear her dreams about what will grow and where she will plant it. In a couple of weeks we will see what, if anything, is planted and will come up from the thawing earth. New beginnings.
Have a good day!!
Claudia says
There are less browning leaves inside than there were outside. Hmmm. I don’t get it!
It’s going to be 55 here today, and I’m thrilled. So exciting about your daughter’s new house!

Dear Claudia, You get a pass on momentous today. I think Robert Mueller got all the momentous for this weekend. What a class act!
Claudia says
He is indeed. Now to hear what’s in the report!

I’ve enjoyed all the photos you’ve posted of the pew; it’s a treasure. Perfect example of “they don’t make stuff like they used to” – – indeed a beautiful leaf carving. Really special. And it’s such a perfect size, this pew; and a perfect thing for your vintage home among your vintage collections. Great find. As are all your finds!
Have spent a couple of days this week, including today, walking around the garden center. They’ve got a lot of lettuces; starting to get in peppers. A bit too early to plant yet, and we’re about to get more rain any minute. But I’ve got the itch. (I’ll never have your green thumb, Claudia; but I do my best!)
I just had to pull out a potted geranium which was age 15; the heat got to it last Fall and it’s been struggling. And ‘freeze’ (yes, it happened this year in SoCalif!) got to a lot of other stuff I had out back; so, for the first time in a few years, I’ve got major re-potting/planting to do very soon (I can’t believe how much it got to my succulents; they’ve always been so hardy). Our biggest problem in the yard right now is weeds; they’re overtaking us. I refuse to use toxic weed killer, so everything has to be hand-pulled and it’s a darn big hillside behind us. My husband keeps saying he’s going to go do it himself; doesn’t want to call in the landscaping crew (it’s expensive; gotta wait til it can include trimming, too). But it’s too much for one person; too much for both of us. Sometimes I really would like to trade in our property for a smaller one, with maybe a little postage stamp size for a backyard; would be so much easier and less costly for us (at the age we are now, and on fixed income).
Can’t believe it’s only March and we already have wild lupine growing next to sidewalks and streets, wherever there’s a patch of untended ground (a lot of our neighborhoods are above town, circling thru the lower hills; it’s the hills which are a-bloom). Beautiful to see – – all blue and purple, sometimes amid yellow flowers which aren’t mustard but something else I can’t remember. The downside is that we’re already being warned about wildfire danger with the large amount of rainfall contributing to all this new growth which will, of course, become fire tinder, all too soon; I’m sure they’ll move weed abatement (mandatory) to May 1 instead of June 1.
Claudia says
I may have a green thumb, but I don’t grow vegetables. Heaven knows whether I’d be remotely successful with that!
I won’t use toxic things on my lawn or weeds either, so the grass is what it is. I pull them as best I can in the garden beds, but that can be exhausting, too! So glad you have masses of purple lupine surrounding you, Vicki. So beautiful!

I have no idea why it’s called that, but it makes me laugh every time I say it.
I will pass on any rug source I find. I haven’t started looking in earnest.
So glad you had a good and productive day yesterday, Kathy!
Nancy Blue Moon says
Raking gravel does not sound like much fun at all…good luck when you get to that chore!!
Claudia says
It is not one bit fun. That I can tell you! Thanks, Nancy!
