Saturday Morning Thoughts

August 28, 2021 at 9:42 am by Claudia

It’s actually darker in here than this photo indicates. It’s a rainy morning.

Frankly, I welcome it. Don mowed most of the front lawn yesterday and I mowed the Secret Garden and weed whacked and pulled weeds. Normally, this would be no big deal, but it was very hot and far more humid than we had anticipated. I’m glad we got it done, but we were wiped out for the rest of the day and this morning I feel like incredibly lethargic due to the dreaded allergies.

Anyway, I plan to be a slug today and a gentle rain is the perfect backdrop for doing nothing. (Well, I’ll wash the towels and clean a wee bit, but not much more!)

I finished The Woman in Blue  by Elly Griffiths this morning and have started The Chalk Pit. By the way, it’s always best to read a series in order because most good writers develop the recurring characters over time and tracking all of that is half the fun of the reading experience.

Apropos of nothing, I still read several blogs and lately I’ve noticed some bloggers using another blogger’s post – usually once a week. They’ll give credit to the source, which is good, but isn’t that the equivalent of using someone else’s hard work to fill your space? Do they ask permission to use the post, I wonder? If I was their teacher, and I was a teacher for years, I’d call that a lack of originality, bordering on cribbing. I suppose they might frame it as passing along something neat to their readers. Okay. However, if that’s the case, why not link to the original post so the content originator gets the clicks and ad income? That’s the way it should be done.

As it is, they’ve done none of the work and research that went into the creation of that post. And in some cases, are making money off of it. Troubling.

One good thing – the humidity has broken and the temperature has dropped. Huzzah!

I intended to mention this a few weeks back, but better late than never. Happy 50th Anniversary to my dear cousin Eileen and her husband Woody, two of the finest people I know. Eileen reads this blog and I absolutely adore her. When I saw that their kids and grandkids had gathered together to celebrate the anniversary, I was reminded that I was a bridesmaid in that wedding! Fifty years: congratulations, dear ones!

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Believe me, there are dust bunnies under that sofa and under the sofa in the den!

      Stay safe, Ellen.

I agree on the bloggers using other bloggers work. We all seem to follow many of the same blogs and in many cases we have already read the post . If you are directed to the other persons’ blog it does appear that they will get their revenue. If they agreed to this poaching they may enlarge their audience ? But we never know if any thing was used with permission…

Quite frankly, it’s difficult for me to imagine the original creator agreeing to it. But, of course, I have no way of knowing that for sure. In the case of the originating blogs I’m referring to, they already have a huge audience.

I have to say, I’m not at all comfortable with it!

Thanks for weighing in, Gayle. I appreciate it.

      Stay safe.

Curious. Do your allergies interfere with your coaching? I know when I have cold/allergies my voice changes.
Your voice is of utmost importance☺
    Congratulations.
How wonderful to have done such quality work that you were chosen all these years later because of it.

No, my voice usually isn’t affected by my allergies. Only if I have a big old cold of some kind, and believe me, I’ve coached through colds in the past!

Thanks so much for your kind words, Jan.

      Stay safe.

I’m feeling like a slug today myself. Heating pad on the back, coffee and a book. That’s my day.

I know others have been suffering in the heat, but we woke up to 39 degrees this morning! Hopefully we will get a long fall. But it snowed in Denali National Park on Thursday. Sigh.

I always worry about that and wonder about that when I see something familiar in another post, uncredited. I’m sure sometimes it’s just an accident but sometimes most definitely not.

You deserve a really good rest today! It’s hot and humid right here too. I was a slug yesterday and today not much better. You sweat sitting still.

Start the next one right after Chalk Pit. It starts on the same day the Chalk Pit ends.

When you run posts from another account once a week – that’s deliberate – as in the case of the blogs I’m referencing. But yes, sometimes people do forget to credit others and will usually correct that as soon as they realize it.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to order the next one soon so I have it on hand!

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Speaking of slugs, you have reminded me to put some hay under my pumpkins which are just starting to take shape!
I am reading The Whole Truth by Cara Hunter, the fifth in series about D.I. Adam Fawley and his team.

Rather concerning but my next door neighbour just called to tell me that another neighbour had said he had seen two young men in hoodies leaving her property about 1:00 a.m. yesterday morning. He had seen it on his CCTV. I would have been in bed still reading at that time so my bedroom light would still have been on.
Anyway she stayed for coffee and we suddenly saw two lovely dogs appear at my back patio window. They had escaped from a few doors away. We stepped outside but they ran off, when I came back inside I saw that there was an Amazon parcel in the hallway! The driver didn’t knock or we would have heard him but he actually opened the front door by the handle.
I thought here I am discussing security when I have forgotten to lock my own front door!

    Happy Saturday

Thank you so much for the lovely anniversary wish. You are so very kind to think of us. 50 Years…..seems like such a long time, so how could it go by so fast? You also sang at our wedding and I remember loving it.
    Love you,
    Eileen

Oh yes! I forgot that I sang as well! The Lord’s Prayer, I believe.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that you got married, Eileen. It stuns me how quickly time goes by.

Love you. And love to Woody, too!

Your wood floor looks so clean! I am busy putting my house back in order now that the granddaughters go back to school Monday. My floors need a good mopping. I am so happy that their school just mandated masks. There is some drama about it though and my daughter has heard talk of a protest on the first day. Her sister in law is anti mask, anti vax, and said that masks are shortening the kids lives…such nonsense! It never ceases to amaze me at the ignorance of people.

I agree with you about trying to read a series in order. I am on book 3 and can’t wait to see what happens to Ruth next. I am trying to clean so I have to bribe myself….vacuum and read a chapter, empty the dishwasher and read a chapter, etc. It’s the only way I will accomplish anything.
    Have a relaxing (sluggish) day.
    Stay safe

Oh, it needs a good swiffering, Marilyn!

Really? A protest? Don’t these people have anything more constructive to do?

I like your technique: do something you really don’t want to do, then reward yourself with a chapter of your book. Bravo!

      Stay safe.

I only read 3 blogs now. I am very annoyed when bloggers post someone else’s work. I imagine that it is very difficult to come up with an original post after blogging so many years. I couldn’t do it. I really appreciate the bloggers that I read, such as yours. I like your blog because you have many interests, you share some of your life, your posts are topical regarding current events, and most of all you are an authentic and down to earth person. Another blog that I still follow is an artist and I enjoy her work. I have loved watching her little girl grow up. The third blogger i follow is a long time blogger who writes about simple living. The blog word certainly has changed. Writers post about their homes (which look like furniture stores ) that don’t look like homes at all! I lost all interest when that started.

I don’t think any blogger should post someone else’s work. If they think it’s so great, then they should link to the original post and that’s it. Otherwise, it’s stealing.

      Thanks, Carolyn Marie.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
