Amazingly, the morning glories are still blooming here at the cottage, with new buds everywhere. If it stays relatively warm, I should be able to see these beauties for a bit longer. The zinnias are also still blooming, as are the cosmos and geraniums. Thank goodness! Otherwise, I would be forced to confront my severely injured garden bed and the now lopsided sugar maple tree. Seeing these flowers sure goes a long way toward lifting my spirits. Don and I sat on the funky patio yesterday, with the sun on our faces and flowers blooming everywhere. Much needed.
Splashes of color and riotous growth along the Chicken Wire Fence Garden = there’s still a bit of summer left. Of course, everywhere I look there are leaves on the ground so it makes for an interesting contrast between the onset of autumn and the end of summer.
Scout is hanging in there. The doctor gave her some Acepromazine (a sedative) yesterday and she apparently cannot metabolize it very quickly, so she remained out of it most of the day. I wish he hadn’t done that. The same thing used to happen with Riley. It wasn’t until around 5:00 or so that she started to shake it off. She’s sore and antsy and is constantly asking for water. I can only give her a bit at a time. She seems to have an appetite but she’s also a bit nauseous, due to the drugs in her system, so we’re taking things slowly. I really felt strongly that one of us should be downstairs with her during the night, so Don took the first shift and I took the second. She was constantly getting up and down during most of my shift, which kept me from sleeping. We finally moved to the den, where I set up her bed by the sofa and after another hour or so, we both got some sleep. Not enough, but it will do.
There’s still a bit of bleeding, but much less than there was. I’m keeping an eye on it. Her butt was shaved, of course, and I see she’s getting a bit of a rash, poor thing. Anyway. She’s here, she came through the surgery, she’s a fighter and she’s getting mildly demanding. That’s a very good thing.
Update: we’re going to take her in for an anti-nausea injection and some fluids. She threw up this morning. All of this was very, very hard on her.
I can’t tell you how much your prayers and support have meant to Scout, Don and me. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Remember the oversized tea/coffee cups I bought at Anthropologie?
Here is what I did with them:
I originally saw this glass drying rack, along with some snazzy cups from Anthropologie, on a post at The Inspired Room. That post is what got me thinking about those cups again. And then I thought about the rack, which was only $14.99 at World Market. Of course, mine doesn’t look quite as pretty because I don’t have white counters and subway tile backsplash, but it will do.
Coffee stations seem to be all the rage right now, but I’ve never felt the need for one. I always place my coffeemaker under the cupboard that holds our glasses and mugs. It’s also usually right next to the refrigerator where the half and half lives. Just makes sense. Since we don’t use flavored coffees or k-cups or any of that sort of thing and counter space is at a minimum here at the cottage, why the heck do we need a coffee station? Believe me, it took some rearranging just to give this drying rack a home, but I wanted to have those pretty cups on display. This is usually a darkish corner of the kitchen and those beautiful cups add the perfect punch of color. I think I’m going to keep my eye out for a vintage tole tray to put under the rack and the coffee maker.
Oh, forgot to tell you. The car repair was relatively minor and we passed the inspection in the nick of time. Yesterday was the deadline for our inspection! Now we have to deal with the chimney and the trees.

Oh Cladia, I’m like you in many ways. I tend to fret about things until it makes me physically sick and then everything I worried about, turns out okay.
Amazingly, I have have that same drying rack, got it at World Market and placed it next to my coffee maker. My mugs are white, not half as pretty as your cups.
So happy to hear that Scout is doing better, it’s been a tough year for her.

Claudia I came here first today to make sure sweet Scout was doing OK. So glad she is home and healing. I know when we worry about our babies nothing is right until they are! The flowers are so pretty! I think I need to buy some mums for some color by my front door! I love those cups you bought and I’ve thought about getting one of those drying racks from World Market and now I know I will. Trying to find an Anthropology within a reasonable drive to me. I too have limited counter space but have made space for a coffee station as well – it’s the most used nook in the kitchen! Your use of cups as décor is great and such an easy way to trade out during the seasons.
They make me happy and having them out lets me admire them all the time.
I’m glad to hear Scout is doing better…it’s hard to watch pets recuperate after surgery…you just want them to hurry up and get better! Your cup rack and cups look so lovely on the counter, really does make a cheery colorful spot!

That’s so hard, is the antibiotic making her sick? Maybe she needs a change…
I think it’s a combination of the anesthesia on Sunday, the acepromazine yesterday and the antibiotics. Normally, she could handle the antibiotics but she’s been through a lot and she no longer metabolizes ace and anesthesia as easily as she used to. Doc gave her a penicillin shot that will take care of her for a few days, so she can get over the nausea.

I enjoyed the uplifting news reports emanating from this post dear girl! First, that Scout is gradually recovering and will soon be feeling a lot better I’m sure……after all her ‘parents’ sleep with her and take such good care of her.
Next, that the car repairs didn’t bankrupt you! That the chicken wire fence garden is so awesome and beautiful for this, the first glorious October morning. Of course with a bit of decor thrown in the works you’ve shared the perfect post – lovely idea for the cups as they are much too pretty to hide in a cabinet!

Your morning glories are beautiful and a lovely shade of blue. I’ve been loving those drying racks but I opted for the good old fashioned wood dowel coffee mug tree for $3 from a garage sale. Love the industrial look with cottage. Yours looks great on your counter with the lively cups! Glad to hear that the car repairs weren’t too costly and that your vehicle passed inspection. Okay, you’re moving down the list now and checking off one item at a time. Please bend down and give Scout a tender kiss on the cheek for me! My heart breaks when I hear she’s not doing well. You see…..I’ve become very attached to her even though it’s in cyberspace.

Claudia – so glad that Scout is getting better. I knew you’d want one of you with her all night so try to get a nap in. Love the cups. My coffee maker is in same place for same reasons. I’ve been trying to think of a way to get some mugs out with no counter space to spare.

I love new mugs. Love them. Every store I go into, I somehow am drawn to them. A couple times a year I buy one for me and one I send to my best friend in Denver. We talk on the phone frequently and we share our coffee in our cups. I was just thinking I need to go through my mugs and box up some older ones I haven’t used in a long time for the thrift store. THEN there will be room for a few new ones! (I also change out my mugs for the seasons.) My husband thinks I am crazy, or at the least a bit odd. :-) I know better!!
Your flowers are still beautiful and so glad you have some time to enjoy them. It is a gorgeous day here today and supposed to be 80*, so I think you have several good days still ahead as our weather usually travels your way!

Glad Scout is getting feisty! Always a good sign. Check with your vet, but I fed my dog baby food rice cereal when she was throwing up when she was old. She held it down better. And she was so hungry I had to feed her just a little every 15 minutes. You just have to add water to it, so its simple to make very small portions. No cooking it either.

So glad Scout is feeling better. It’s always so hard when they can’t tell you what hurts. I too love my coffee. We do have a Keurig (makes afresh cup everytime!) but have quit buying the individual K-cups-too expensive. Bought a set of cafe cups, 4 little filter cups that you put regular coffee into and use like a K-cup. Works well. If I had more counter space I would love to have and display pretty coffee cups, looks so pretty. Love your home and decor.
Also glad car repairs were minimal…always a nightmare!
I always brew my Peet’s French Roast, then by the time I’m through with that, Don gets up and brews his decaf.

HANG IN THERE, SCOUT! :) Claudia we usually have similar weather and it looks like the entire week will be summery…I still have new zinnias coming into bloom and even found a pepper in my veg. garden : ) I picked the last of my tomatoes yesterday afternoon so that I could tear down the plants for garbage pickup but there are 16 orange ones and about 8 green, my pepper, morning glories still blooming ( though I have left them trailing up my sunflowers I did take the ones climbing the porch down so that I could clean all that up a little. What I do is clip that part late summer or early fall but still leave the bottom portion intact to keep blooming till frost. ) and the rest of the flowers still say summer . Here is wishing you some lovely days enjoying your gardens and Scout’s swift recovery ! :)
I just want her to feel less nauseous so we can get some food into her and some antibiotics, as well!

I hope that Scout will feel better once the nausea ends. Poor baby! I lost my beloved girl, Annabelle, last month, so I know how sick with worry you have been. Annabelle was almost 14 1/2, and was my shadow, and I miss her. I still have my boy, and he is a great source of comfort. Our animals give us much more than we can ever repay, don’t they? I will keep good thoughts that Miss Scout continues to feel better as the days progress.

It’s very interesting that your job ended at the same time Scout became ill. Isn’t life a mystery? I’m so glad you posted that litlte coffee rack again. I’ve been wanting one and must have missed it the first time you showed it. I really don’t have room for the big ones I keep seeing and this is perfect!
It worked out beautifully. I don’t know if Don would have seen what was going on because she has so much hair and the bleeding was kind of hidden. I came home and happened to sit down on the floor to hug her, then she walked away and I saw it. Just in time, I might add.

I hope Scout continues to improve. She’s been through so much already. Life can get so messy at times, so it’s nice you have your flowers to cheer you! Also, I love your little cup rack and your colorful cups. Glad Scout is hanging in there and healing OK, though she’s had a tough go of it, poor girl. I’m assuming her bed couldn’t be upstairs by your bed because she can’t climb up and down stairs? Your cups look so pretty on the mug rack. Those cups are definitely too pretty to be hidden away in a cupboard. I don’t have a coffee station either. I’m the only coffee drinker (Brian drinks tea) and only have 1-2 cups in the morning and like you, I keep it simple: Mr. Coffee coffee maker (I have no desire for a Keurig; besides, I like to buy whole beans and grind them fresh every morning) and real half and half (no artificially flavored stuff that’s laden with chemicals) in the fridge. Oh – lovely flowers, too. My geraniums are still hanging in there.
Right. We used to have both dogs upstairs with us but when Riley got so bad and kept tripping and falling on the stairs, we had to move them both downstairs. I knew Riley need Scout with him. Now that he’s gone, we’ve just stayed with that setup as it is Scout’s routine now. And the few times I’ve taken her upstairs in the past year, she’s been very wary of coming down the stairs. Her vision isn’t a good as it used to be.
I have been praying for you alll. So many trials fior you to go through. I hope Scout is progressing well and that was good
news regarding your car. Your coffee maker is the same as mine and yes, it works quite well for one and my counter is
small as well. You two are such a remarkable and loving couple. A big hug to you, Don and Scout.

Claudia, I just recently began reading your blog. I have been enjoying it so much. It is now part of my daily routine to check it in the morning while I drink my coffee. We have much in common, especially the love for our husband, dogs, garden, trees, and colorful coffee cups! I just wanted you let you know I am keeping Scout in my prayers. I hope she is back to feeling well and strong as soon as possible. I know how hard this must be on you and Don. Have been through it with my aging dogs as well and it is really just so hard….
