Seasonal Change

August 29, 2025 at 8:28 am by Claudia

Speaking of Rose of Sharon, some deer chomped on the smaller of the two bushes, eating lots of the flower buds. Grrrrr.

Next year, I’m installing some sort of barrier around them.

Boy, the weather has really changed. There’s definitely a feeling of autumn in the air. It’s now dark when we wake up so we’re not sure what time it is. And the evening dark comes much earlier. I’m ready for sweaters and thermals (our favorite winter wear.) There are small maple leaves that have already changed color falling to the ground. It happens so quickly.

As much as I love spring and summer, I find myself feeling happy that it will soon be autumn. That’s what I love about the seasons and what I eventually missed when I lived in southern California. I grew up in Michigan, moved to Philadelphia, and then moved to Boston. Four distinct seasons is what I know. And now it’s what Don – a San Diego boy – knows, too. He loves it.

The phlox is fading, as are the coneflowers. September is around the corner. Soon the kids will be back in school. The rivers are low. We need rain, just like last year at this time. But there’s one thing we know: it will all change. And then, we’ll be complaining about too much rain.

In a week, I go back to NJ for two days. And again, the week after that. Don has his last event in the summer concert series while I’m gone next week. I’m disappointed because that’s the one I had planned on attending because Don is on the bill. He’ll be singing. But, what can you do?

By the time I finish this job, it will be mid-September! Time goes by so quickly.

Today, I have lots of little chores to tackle. Nothing exciting, but definitely necessary.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

It’s starting to have a feel of autumn here, too, except that this weekend is supposed to be very hot. Autumn is my favorite season, and I love sweaters. Sorry you’ll miss Don’s gig. I’m sure it’s fun to see him do what he enjoys so much. Hope your work goes well.

beautiful flowers. i’d want to protect them, too, but also would want the deer and other creatures to get what they need. some hard decisions in life! like you getting work you enjoy but having to miss don’s performance. trusting there will be more of all of the good things!

we’re having cooler weather here, too, and i am grateful! highs around 81 instead of 95-plus means i sleep a bit better, and am more productive and less crabby. :)

hope don feels better after that long walk and the coffee tasted extra-good to him. on our walk this morning, my sister and i saw a deer munching on something, didn’t seem to care about us being maybe fifteen feet away. and – finally – we saw a catbird! it was up close on a tree right next to the trail, making that recognizable sound and so we could see him. cute little thing! :)

enjoy that easier cool weather and hope your days are easy, too. same to don and everyone else.

There is an abundance of plants and bushes and trees here on the property. They don’t need this particular bush.

Glad you saw a catbird! We don’t see them at all now that they aren’t using the nest.

      Stay safe.

hope the deer and other creatures will stay away from that bush then! simple rope/post fence? spray? hair clippings? good luck to all, especially you and don in this matter.

Autumn is my favorite season and so I am glad it has cooled off here. How nice that you are both working – I’m sure it feels good to share your talents.

Our temps have been very pleasant here, too, it’s been glorious to open the windows and let a cool breeze air out the house. It’ll be in the low 60’s by next weekend…and I am thrilled. Sweater weather!

I’ve had a problem with animals eating things too…unusual plants for them. Somebody ate my marigolds in full glorious bloom. I thought marigolds were safe? Nothing evidently, is safe when you live surrounded by nature.

    Enjoy your day! ;)

I spray the plants to protect them from the deer and sometimes it works…not always. What has worked the last two years was fishing line. I tie it to a stick and make a kind of fence with it. The local nursery told me to try this with the spray. Supposedly the deer touch the line and it scares them so they move on. I couldn’t say how much this actually helped but for the last two years we’ve been deer free. They have chomped on my day lillies on the other side of the house where there is no fish line but I do spray. I think the young ones don’t know they aren’t supposed to like the spray. Good luck.

I enjoy this time of year. Most summer people are heading back. We had two eagles enjoying a fish on the beach today.
    Enjoy the day!

Love that you had a view of the eagles.

I will try that next spring, Eileen. It sounds like it may work.

      Thanks, Eileen!

The weather is so nice here also. I’m heading to the N. Ga. Mountains with my family for the weekend. My first trip/mini vacation in several years. I’m so excited and to be with my Grands is always a joy. Happy September!

Too bad you won’t hear the concert, but its lucky for you to hear don at home. He is really talented.

I was driving home last night after a little art class and had to slam on my brakes for a skunk who decided to be in the middle of the road. My stuff slid onto the car floor. I swore as my pastels may have all broken. But they are in a sturdy plastic container and were fine. What a relief! I haven’t worked on something in a while.

I love autumn. The colors aren’t great here, but the warm days are so nice.

The antibiotics are hard on my stomach. Gosh, I was sick.

I hope you’re eating some yogurt to help relieve the side effects of the antibiotics, Irene.

      Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
