Seeing Stars

May 18, 2017 at 9:16 am by Claudia

This is a little plant called Star of Bethlehem. I didn’t plant it here, so I suspect it was here before we moved in. It’s tucked under one of the hostas in the bed right next to the porch. Every year, I think it’s not going to bloom because the leaves look like they’re dying, and every year, that is the precise time the flowers appear. Its’ really interesting.

I just love these delicate flowers. They close up at night and open again when the sun hits their shady bed.

Side note: Photography brings surprises. I had no idea that little bug was on one of the petals until I edited this photo.

Not much to report, my friends. I mowed the back forty and the ‘lilac side’ of the front lawn. I weed wacked and cleaned up the area around the funky patio. When the heat got too intense for the pansies, I moved all the urns into the shade where they will remain today. 90 degrees and humid is on today’s weather docket. Yuck.

Today? I’m not sure because it’s already pretty darned humid out there. I know that because I had to go out and shoo away a woodpecker who was pecking on the house. Since we have vinyl siding, it’s futile, but boy was it loud!

And a big hurrah for the appointment of Robert Mueller as Special Counsel in the Trump/Russia investigation! Finally, a bit of good news.

Happy Thursday.

Big news around here today (not!)—boat dock in the water and bleeding hearts blooming. Over and out.

p.s. Love the little star flowers!

Hot down here too. Yesterday we broke a record. 94 degrees. Could happen again today. Yuck. Lovely flowers. Going to make quilt blocks and read.

There’s not much news here either…a few big storms came through last night. Which managed to cool things down back to the upper 60’s…nice. I bought some more perennials…I will need to plant them today. I just can’t resist….no flower will power! Good news out of Washington…finally, something to give us hope. Enjoy your day! ;)

Hope good news continues fr D.C…. Not much around here either…finally got garden somewhat in shape. Have to plant the miniature lavenders (will grow only to 12″ or so). Trip to hardware store and grocery store. Wow, exciting! Well, I admit to loving the hardware store and may come home with more than a new hose nozzle…

We had some crazy storms yesterday, but I won’t complain too much as pictures today sent from my friend in Denver shows about 6 inches of snow on the ground ~ over all the plants she put in the ground already. ugh. They had been in the upper 80’s for a while.

Good news on the SC being hired. I just saw that “the idiot” is holding a press conf this afternoon. That should be interesting. LOVE that they told everyone at the summit he is attending this weekend to keep their speeches and comments short as the President of the United States has a very short attention span. Boy, we look brilliant!! If it isn’t about him, he won’t listen anyway.

Have a lovely Thursday, and keep cool!!!

I saw someone on IG just post photos of that snow! Oh my!

I refuse to watch any press conferences by that man. I can’t bear watching him! I’ll read about it after the fact.

Claudia, when I saw the first picture of your hosta and Star of Bethlehem, I had an envious moment, thinking “Wait, my hostas don’t have those beautiful blooms!” What a lovely combination! I love how obvious it is that your garden has evolved over time. I’m enjoying your blog so much.

We barely have sunshine, but that is normal. I wonder if that Woodpecker was as loud as when the flickers around her land on the top of the chimney and do a rat-a-tat-tat when they are advertising for a mate? It reverberates on the metal chimney and sounds like nothing else.

You have such lovely plants and flowers in your yard, Claudia; thank you for sharing the calming, pretty photos.

I got pretty warm here today in SoCalif but our weather is nothing like yours right now; we’re milder, at least for today.

I saw two little quail late this afternoon, 5pm-ish, and in an unlikely place; I think they came out of the nearby hillsides where a canyon is located. I’m not too ‘up’ on species but I did recognize these two little guys crossing the street, the one trying to catch up with the other. Put a smile on my face! They were two perfect little things of nature; interesting markings of course.

I have iften visited but never commented before. I so enjoy reading your blog, your writing voice…its crystal clear and something about the way you use words is so comforting. Torrential rain here in the West of England where I live, and lots of shouting politicians…..been dreadful since we foolishly voted to leave the European Union.

Like you delighted to hear about the investigation into Trump: surely the worst US President of all time

Oh, Siobhan (what a beautiful name) thank you! Such lovely words for me to read this morning.

Shouting politicians here as well! Every day it seems there are new disclosures. It’s never ending. I agree: absolutely the worst President – ever.

I love the tours of your garden and the fruits of your labors over the years. Your blog has always been a haven of beauty and peace (with an occasional dose of reality) which is vastly appreciated. Thanks to you and all gardeners who tend to the earth keeping the birds, bees, chipmunks, and woodchucks in mind. When I see these plants blooming with hope, I feel that maybe there is hope for the world, too. Peace and blessings to you!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
