Saturday. It’s turned very cold, so our mild – for the season – temperatures are now gone. We are due for snow tomorrow; 1-3 inches during the day and 1-3 inches overnight. We have our snowblower again so that’s great. Very nice people repaired it and returned it to us, but Don is having trouble removing the gas cap. So he’s got to figure that out today.
As always with early snowfalls, I’m all in. That will change, of course. But I’d love to see some snow on the ground for Christmas.
I just finished Slough House this morning and that darned Mick Herron has ended it in a real cliffhanger! What am I going to do? The most recent book in the series, Bad Actors, is out in hardback, but a quick google search has told me that my worries about the status of one of the characters will not be resolved in that book. Oh well, patience is a virtue – so they say.
In the meantime, I have the newest Anthony Horowitz at the ready. And Louise Penny, of course, but you know I always delay that pleasure.
And a new puzzle has arrived, thank goodness.
And Don is going to make an apple pie.
Simple pleasures. That’s all I need.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

good luck with the snow and the gas cap on the snowblower!
in a world where big, flashy and expensive things get so much attention, i very much agree with you about simple pleasures. :)
may you, don and everyone else have a day (every day) full of simple pleasures and time to enjoy them all. happy, safe saturday to everyone.

We just got a little over 4 inches of snow yesterday. But with over freezing temps today, I’m wondering how much of it will melt.
We are off today to visit good friends in Milwaukee. I predict a good time will be had by all…good friends are the best.
A beautiful tree, apple pie, a new book and a new puzzle? What more could a girl want?? Enjoy! ;)
Claudia says
Nothing more. That’s the answer. We did a lot of chores today to get ready for snow. Now, Don is running out again to make sure he has tortilla chips for the snow ‘event.’ Ha!
Stay safe, Donnamae.

A friend gave me 2 Mick Herrons from the Slough House series and I don’t seem to be able to warm up to the author or the series – which titles are you looking for? I’d love to move mine on to a more appreciative shelf – right now they are waiting for a trip to a Little Free Library.

Simple pleasures sounds perfect to me.
Claudia can you recommend any authors who have a writing style similar to Louise Penny? I really enjoy her books. Other than the introduction of the crime, I appreciate the fact that she doesn’t interject a lot of violence in her storylines. Years ago I used to read books by Patricia Cornwell, but they became increasingly more graphic and violent and I had to stop. At this stage of my life I just can’t watch movies or read anything violent anymore.
Claudia says
I love Deborah Crombie and recommend her highly. It’s best to read her books in order as there is a progression and development of the recurring characters. Though, there’s no one that writes like Louise Penny.
I had to stop Patricia Cornwell books as well – plus I find her protagonists to be curiously cold. I cannot empathize with them.
Stay safe, Denise.

Thank you for the recommendation Claudia.
Joyce F in Kansas says
Try the series by Donna Leon, also best when read in order.

Thank you Joyce!

I’m sorry you can’t warm up to them, Ceci. I have all of them except the newest and that will be coming to me via the library next week.
Thanks so much.
Stay safe.

We humans often complicate things when we don’t have to. Simple pleasures are the best. Reading, jigsaw-puzzling, eating apple pie, watching the snow fall while we’re all snug an d warm. What could be better? Wait, I know “playing” dolls. Loved to do that as a child and love to do that now. My inner child has spoken. My husband says I’m eight going on eighty, lol. He’s right, you know. Enjoy your weekend especially the first snowfall of the season. We’re supposed to get some overnight, too. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
I guess that makes me a little over 7 and going on 71? Because my inner child is loving playing with dolls.
I think Don is going to make that pie tomorrow while it’s snowing. Perfect.
Stay safe, Elaine.

I could tell you but I won’t! I love the Slough House series that you turned me on to. Fortunately we have a great library system here in Hillsborough county and I was able to get on the waiting list for the newest book early. It is as great as all his others. I love your beautiful tree, each year it’s just as beautiful as the last.😊
Claudia says
I just reserved Bad Actors and no one is waiting for it, so I should get it next week.
Thanks so much, Janet.
Stay safe.

I think events of the last six years, culminating in the horrors of the pandemic, has shown us all that simple pleasures are the best, but for some that realization doesn’t last. You and Don have lived that ideal for years, but it seems especially true right now. I’ve made some holiday dresses for my Blythes that I’d like to share with you if I can figure out how. I’m really enjoying these quirky girls. Thank you for sharing you’re always beautiful tree

My cousin could do with some simple pleasures right now. She’s been on an extended-long cruise of the Mediterranean. Not that she’s wealthy; but it was a favor, somewhat, to friends who are going thru a bad time: The guy is terminal, it’s his last hurrah, he wanted to see the Greek islands, etc. The wife didn’t want to go alone (the two of them, with it all on her to shoulder the responsibility for her husband’s care and wellbeing while traveling [just a bit scary for her; worrisome]), so my cousin went along as third wheel to make sure this guy’s last dream could happen.
Anyway, the guy got really sick and the ship’s doctor flew him home (he had developed pneumonia; not Covid). Wife went with him. This left my cousin alone for the rest of the cruise. While on a shore excursion earlier in the week, she started feeling flu-y and was diagnosed with Covid. She has now been quarantined to her stateroom, for days. Was supposed to fly home to the States yesterday, but now they don’t want her on a plane til next Weds at least. Where she’ll eventually fly home from is now a wild guess as the ship continues its voyage. At the moment, I really couldn’t figure out exactly WHERE she is, or near what country.
In the meantime, she feels like she has had the worst flu of her life; she’s age 61. In otherwise good health. I just want her strong enough to get herself on a plane and get back to Pennsylvania without further incident and problems. It is no picnic to be trying to get yourself off a boat, then on an international flight, when you are feeling unwell (I know; I’ve done it; something similar happened to me forty years ago, difference being that I was YOUNGer).
I just keep asking myself if this trip was worth it, but I guess you’d have to ask the guy who is on his last legs. I feel for him; he’s known time is running out. I’d want to see and do everything left on the bucket list, too. Still doesn’t seem like the greatest time to be traveling, though. I know a lot of people pull it off in this past year or even in 2021 after vaccinations.
Despite having her five shots of Covid vaccine, my cousin admitted to inconsistent mask wearing, so I’m sure that probably had something to do with it. Again, it’s all over my TV right now, at least for Los Angeles County, for masks strongly recommended in any public indoor setting, including schools, restaurants, theaters, retail shopping and the like. As the public health folks are saying, Covid is still with us.
It’s just so frustrating and sad that a person can’t just go have a nice vacation in a normal way. And you know what else? Today is her birthday; my cousin is alone and sick and God Knows Where in the world … on her birthday. I feel helpless. All I can do is pray for her. Just please God, get her home for Christmas and into the arms of her loved ones back in the U.S.!

Very sorry to hear this, Vicki. Best wishes sent out.
