Some Stitching & McCoy Monday

March 1, 2010 at 7:05 am by Claudia

Ah, it is Monday – we residents of Mockingbird Hill Cottage are hoping against hope that all is back to normal. We’ve had power outages, lots of heavy, wet snow and on Sunday we lost our cable, phone and going online was impossible for much of the day. Thankfully, every day we had power and cable by the time the Olympics came on. We are also very lucky – friends of ours who live south of us lost 2 trees and had no power for over 50 hours.

On to McCoy – this piece is a bookend/vase. For some reason, I only have one. The flower is hollow and is meant to be used as a vase. I found this early in my collecting days and it sits on the windowsill above the kitchen sink. It is one of my favorites – makes me smile! (Sorry the photo is a little dark but I didn’t get around to taking it until last night.)

I’ve stitching along with Amy’s 39 Squares. She makes these lovely embroidery samplers that consist of 1 inch squares in a grid. They have a spontaneous feeling to them – more freestyle and fun than traditional samplers. Amy has decided to do a square a day with a total of 39 squares in honor of her upcoming birthday. Those of us who are taking part will post a square a day so you will see, for better or worse, the fruits of my labor. I haven’t done any embroidery except for a stitch or two since I was a camp counselor in my early 20’s. Denim shirts were big then and each of us girls decorated our shirts with all sorts of embroidery. (I wish I knew where that shirt was!) Consequently, I am rusty. Today’s square is my first wobbly attempt at this.

The outline is a bit wonky – but I’m okay with that. I added a little flower button. I have to come up with a new square every day….Yikes!

Have a good day, everyone.

I bet that once you get ‘into the groove’ the daily square ideas will be busting out of your head! This project is an interesting idea.

    Good Morning Claudia Sweetie..
Oh my gosh first off, I am so thankful that you and DH survived this major storm you had. What a deal, and hopefully you will be back to normal today. My goodness I have been reading about these storms back there. Glad you are all okay at Mockingbird Hill Cottage.

I love this McCoy vase. It is so cheery and bright, and what a site to see each and every time you look out the window. Beautiful Claudia just beautiful.

Your embroidery is just darling. I love the little button that is the center. And the stitch that you embroidered for the leaves is just exquisite. Embroidery is just like getting back on a bike, you never forget. Beautiful job sweetie. Just beautiful. I love the idea of doing a little square each day for a certain amount of days.

Have a beautiful Monday. Country hugs sweetie and so much love…Sherry

    Hey Claudia,

I’m so glad you’re doing okay in spite of the weather. I’m sending you warm, yet a little drippy, wishes here from Arizona. I’m sorry, but since we just had more rain, it means you’ll have more snow coming….please don’t hate us! LOL

What a cute little button….did I send that one to you, cause it looks like one I used to have? Very stylish use for it regardless.

    Hugs,
    Meri

Your McCoy flower vase is very cheery! I like the idea of doing one embroidered square a day. I can’t wait to see what you will do next and how it will all look in the end. I remember embroidering denim shirts, and jeans and throw pillows. When my daughter was in high school she decided that she wanted to embroider a pair of her jeans too. Wow did she ever. And she wore those pants to school so often over the next 3 years that they finally wore thin and grew holes. Her friends called them her hippi pants. :-)

Sending you some California sunshine my friend…enough of winter!!

Oh your McCoy bookend/vase is divine…I love the colors.

Your embroidery is lovely and I adore wonky! I’d love to learn how to embroider, it’s number 672 on the list of things I would love to learn how to do.

    Have a fabulous week Claudia!!

I wish you still had that shirt too! My aunt embroidered denim shirts for my brothers back in the 70’s and I always loved looking at them. (I admit, I was a tiny bit jealous of them!)
I love your first square– it’s wonderful! I love that button. I did my first square tonight. My first attempt was aweful– had to tear it out and start over! I’m really happy with my second attempt– some little flowers. I’ll be posting my squares once a week, I think. I’m looking forward to visiting all the stitchers’ blogs!

What storms you’ve had again – and even here it’s still unsettled with a possible snow due tonight. It snowed heavily on this date last year also so I won’t be surprised if we wake to a white in the morning.

I love this embroidery idea but every day, wow that’s going to be a job! You will come up with great ideas though – and I have to admit I’m thinking it sounds fun and I might try perhaps a square a week!!!!

    Stay warm and safe dear.

Love the McCoy! It speaks to me. The embroidery isn’t supposed to be perfect, as it’s handmade. I thought of you over the weekend when the news said your region was snowed in.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
