Sorting, Walking, Curling, Reading

January 27, 2024 at 8:42 am by Claudia

Rest assured, it’s still gray out there. This was taken over a week ago on a rare sunny day.

I attacked that junk drawer with relish yesterday. Much was thrown in the trash, the rest was reorganized in a way that made sense. It is now a thing of beauty. I was in the mood to tackle it yesterday. If only I was in that mood on a daily basis! The result was very satisfying.

We haven’t done our walk since January 11th because of the weather. Lots of snow, bitter cold, high winds, lots of rain – that has been our weather for the past two weeks. Today, we have a rare dry day, so we’ll be back at it. Tomorrow, we have a rain/snow forecast, so we’ll see. After that, it should be relatively stable for the week. We have missed that daily walk at the library.

I’m reading The Poppy War  by R. F. Kuang and, though it’s very different than my usual fare, I’m quite enjoying it. And I just finished reading my required pages for this week in Wolf Hall.  I haven’t played with the girls much this week. I needed a break from my Blythe feed on Instagram. It can sometimes be a bit overwhelming – too much visual stimulation and too much buying and selling by people who have far more money than I. When that happens, I back off for a while.

Besides, little Shirley Temple needs my attention this week. The sponge rollers that I need for her hair arrived yesterday. The whole idea of sponge rollers sent me on a memory trip. I remember setting my hair with large pink sponge rollers. I’m not sure what I was trying to achieve with my straight hair, but that was what we did in those days. My mom used the bristly type of rollers that you stuck a pick into. Remember them? The women in our neighborhood – and Don tells me it was the same in his, as well – routinely put curlers in their, tied a scarf around them, and went shopping. Seeing anything like that nowadays is extremely rare. It took me years to finally accept the fact that I had fine, straight hair. It has a very slight wave when allowed to dry naturally, but basically it wasn’t going to do what I wanted it to do – whatever that was.

Stay safe, my friends.

Happy Saturday.

I remember the brush rollers and the pink foam ones, much easier to sleep on. Then I graduated to heated rollers. The things we did (do) for vanity. I let my hair dry naturally and put it up in a pony tail. Works for me, lol. Enjoy your weekend. Hugs, Elaine

I either let my hair dry naturally or do a blow dry if I want to look more put together.

      Stay safe, Elaine.

that was lovely sunshine in your home. hopefully you’ll get the real thing soon. in the meantime, those plants look very happy and well-loved and your living room is cozy, beautiful. :)

did you paint the highway/landscape painting set by the white lamp? it looks great.

congrats on conquering the drawer (i have one of those myself, as well as a couple of bins to go through). feels good to cross something off the “to do” list,, doesn’t it?

glad you have some good books to read. i’m at page 292 in “war and peace” and am so happy to be reading it. thanks again to you and don for the inspiration.

same here about walking. i get a short walk the equivalent of maybe four blocks when i feed the deer (and some more when grocery shopping, but that’s not the same … too much stopping, too many people, no brisk air and no outdoor prettiness). up until a couple days ago, it’s been bitterly cold (wind chills to 35 below zero) and the path’s been either full of snow or, now, ice. not enough for me so i climb stairs as a way to help. we do what we can, right? also, i am pleased to say that other than one cinnamon roll, i’ve had nothing with added sugar as of january 01! thanks for your inspiration on that, too.

since retiring (and going through the things that led up to retiring at 64), my tolerance for having lots on my “*must* do” list is practically gone. i keep busy with household things and hobbies and time with family and enjoy them all, but scheduled things (like a doctor’s appointment or needing to get new brakes on my car) are grudgingly done and last-minute changes are not often appreciated. guess i’m feeling a bit crabby or tired today or just trying to fully let go of the hard parts of my thankfully-now-past jobs or sugar withdrawal or …? whatever, am hoping for a quiet day today and hope you all have a good day, too. just the way you want it to be. stay safe in every way!

    xo,
    kathy

No, someone else painted that. Don bought it several years ago because it reminded him of driving out west.

We did manage a walk today.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

I personally think that you really have to be in the mood to tackle junk drawers or any decluttering project. Congrats on making order out of chaos.

I remember those pink foam rollers…and the bristly ones too…ouch. Then I found hot rollers and they’ve become my go to ever since. I was not blessed with straight hair….I’ve been cursed with curly/wavy hair. So I’ve been trying to tame it my whole life. Funny, how a lot of women with curly hair want straight and women with straight want some curls. Acceptance is hard sometimes.

    Enjoy your weekend! ;)

My mom and one of my sisters had a very fine completely straight hair. My other sister and I had curly to wavy hair, we were subject to the same routine of washing our hair and wearing the rollers overnight. The sponge rollers were a great improvement. We also had one of those hair dryers that came in a circularsuitcase to speed up the process. It wasn’t considered very smart to shop with your rollers in, but plenty of women did it. I hope your Shirley Temple responds well to the treatment. Stay well!

Oh yes. We had a hair dryer that had a bonnet that you wore where all the heat was concentrated. I have no patience for that kind of thing now!

      Stay safe, Nora.

When I was a kid, my best friend (an only child) had a Shirley Temple doll, among her many dolls. I so coveted that doll! Mom was a big fan and gave me her Shirley Temple books from her
1930’s childhood. I wish I still had them but I do remember one was a PR book about Shirley’s life as a celebrity and the others picture book versions of some of her movies. I’m sure they, like most of my toys, were passed down to younger cousins.

I also have fine, straight hair which Mom fought with Tonette Permanent kits. Ugh. Also, every Saturday night was spent with me sitting in front of Lawrence Welk’s tv show while she twisted curls and inserted Bobbi Pins into my scalp. I always associate that man’s music with pain. Later, when I was a bit older, she would pull my hair back into a ponytail and then wind the hair around those long, metal curlers, remember those? After she put 4 or 5 of those in, I walked around slightly off balance with my head wanting to tilt back.

    Take care,
    Kay

      I remember getting perms! Dreadful.

But all of that was the norm back then. So happy it isn’t now!

      Stay safe, Kay.

I remember people using frozen juice cans for hair rollers. I also remember curlers called Spoolies. I just googled them they are still available for purchase. They were and are strange looking and are made of soft rubber. A blast from the past, it is interesting what are brains hold on too. Spoolies have not been on been on my mind for years and years.
    Take Care,
    Kaye

I remember Spoolies, as well. I can see them right now. You would curl the strand of hair and fold the top over the rest of the Spoolie. I cannot believe they are still making them!

      Thanks, Kaye.

      Stay safe.

I remember sitting under a hair dryer for four (yes, four) hours with huge rollers in my hair trying to straighten it. It had no business being that long. Now I love my short, curly hair but back in the 60s and 70s when long and straight was in, I hated it! Oh, boy — when I think of all the times we were really rather dumb and shallow in our lives!

Your living room photo is lovely — it looks warm and inviting and a great place to settle with a good book. Have a wonderful walk (if you haven’t already — I’m a little late.) It’s supposed to be drying up and a bit warmer here this week and next so perhaps it will blow your way.

Well the seventies was all about long, straight hair!

We had a nice walk on Saturday. Yesterday it rained. We’ll see about today.

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
