I could be wrong, but this seems like the largest version yet of this hosta. It was here when we moved in, so I have no idea how long it’s been around. I suspect all the rain we’ve been having has contributed to its extra-large status.

I think about dividing it, but it’s the oldest hosta around here and I sort of don’t want to mess with it. It’s earned its size.

I did some bramble trimming yesterday, but it involved a bit too much bending over to gather up all the branches. (Doesn’t everything involved with gardening involve too much bending?) But it was such a beautiful day and I wanted and needed to be outside doing  something.

I also had to put a low wire fence that I had stashed in the shed around the big garden bed because someone (I’m talking to you groundhog-who-lives-next-door) has been munching on some plants. We’ll see if it makes any difference. I’ve seen this guy at work and he’s quite agile. Thinks nothing of standing on his hind legs to reach up and pull a tall plant toward him.

Much of the rest of my time was spent on the glider, basking in the sights and sounds of a (finally!) beautiful spring day – lots of birdsong, lots of green. Even though the lilacs are slowly fading, their scent is still strong.

Reading on the porch is one of my favorite things to do, but I’m easily distracted by everything around me. How can I not be?

We watched Moonstruck  last night. It’s a perfect little gem. As many times as I’ve seen it, it seems fresh and new each time I see it again.

We’re off to Rick and Doug’s for some brunch this morning. Rain later today. But right now, as I write this post, it’s sunny.

Happy Sunday.

Your hosta is gorgeous…I understand why you don’t want to split it up. I split mine up to get more plants. But, when I want variety, I either get a division from neighbors, or go buy some.

Glad to hear you got out for a bit. Totally understand the bending…best not to overdo, before you’ve over done! My hubby uses a “grabber” to pick up sticks and pine cones before mowing. It was recommended to him after a hip surgery, and has become his best friend in the garden. It just might be worth a try to save your back for certain chores.

It’s raining here again…I’m hoping to plant my containers. But, that might have to wait. I’m sure brunch was delicious…and the company even better! ;)

I’ve seen those grabbers. I just may have to try one!

It rained here again this morning, and a good portion of yesterday as well. Right now it looks as if it may be clearing a bit in the west. That would be so nice. But a high of only 61* expected.

Hope you had a lovely brunch and a nice peaceful day ahead with some rest in there. Your hostas are beautiful!!

Your hostas are glorious, Claudia. Picture-perfect. Your photos could be used in nursery catalogs – no kidding. My mom had hostas in several places at my childhood home, but until a few years ago, I never knew they came in so many varieties. I have to admit I like the ones with “stripes” and “piping” the best. PS – “Moonstruck” is in my top 10 list, and usually one of the top 3. I never get tired of watching it. My best friend growing up was Italian, and I can vouch for all the dialogue – all her family were wonderful to me and talked just like “Moonstruck.” It’ll always be a quiet masterwork, in my book at least. Have a wonderful brunch with your friends. ☕️

My oldest friend – friends since we were 4 – is also from a big Italian family. I spent a lot of time with them. I can also vouch for the realistic dialogue by John Patrick Shanley.

Ivenever grown hostas, Claudia, but they look so green and vibrant in your garden. Please don’t overdo the work that may harm your back! We had a severe rain storm last night and I felt rocks were pelting my skylights and roof. I managed to sleep in between the really heavy rains but was awoken at least three times. There shouldn’t be as much rain today and none tomorrow. I know you had a good time at brunches. There’s nothing like breakfast cooked by someone else! Moonstruck is one of my favorites too, but I haven’t watched it in years. Time to find my DVD of it. I’m putting movies on my DVD player while I’m sewing the curtains. I’ve seen The Sting; Come Back, Little Sheba; and Rachel Getting Married. I have to say I didn’t see the point of the latter. But loved the fun of the twists and turns of The Sting. I’m seeing Come Back, Little Sheba at the local theater soon, so I wanted to see the movie first. So heartbreaking. I only knew about Shirley Booth as Hazel and I was amazed at what a stellar theater career she had.

Hostas are lovely but I don’t have enough shade here at this house to grow them. It is nice to see everything so green. I’ve taken some downtime this weekend and it’s been good for me. I will even cook dinner tonight! ha!

I think your bad back was catching. I keep trying to decide between advil and tylenol, cold or heat, and standing up is better than sitting! So, when I say I’m feeling your earlier pain, I mean I am really feeling your earlier pain!

I love the porch and your wonderful view. It’s a bit of a haven there, isn’t it? Do be careful with that bending, though!

It isn’t Henry. Henry never messed with the garden. In fact, I’m worried that Henry is no longer with us.

Be careful with your back, my dear friend! You don’t want to make it worse. We have hostas all around our house…and one is huge like yours. We’ve divided it (as well as other ones) several times and they grow back quickly. You won’t damage it; they’re very hardy. Our weather here is still all over the place. Even just today we’ve had everything from overcast and humid, pouring rain, brilliant sunshine, fluffy clouds, and high winds. Hope you had a lovely visit with your friends. I went with my friends to a garden center this morning. :-)

I am being careful. Though it’s much better, it’s not entirely back to normal yet.

I know you can divide a hosta quite easily, it’s more that I want that hosta to stay as it is. It’s so majestic!

oh my. these pictures are simply glorious!
I hope the new little GH gets a clue and leaves your plants alone.
I missed Moonstruck lately. I usually watch the same movies you watch on TCM!
and it’s one of my favorites.
take care. really give your back a chance to heal.
(although… I’ve heard once your back is hurt it will always be a trouble spot from now on.)
‘just call me tammy sunshine!’ the bearer of damned bad news!
hope you had fun at Rick and Doug and Sam’s! XOXO

YOURS is the belief to have! I am only going by seeing experiences of friends or family!
and what’s odd is… I truly believe what we expect and THINK in our minds and hearts is EVERYTHING!
thanks for the reminder dear friend. how easily we (I?) toss around stuff we don’t even think ourselves! xo

Your porch is just so beautiful. I wish you many relaxing happy hours on your glider this summer! Lots of birdsong, lots of green – that describes my time on our smaller front porch and our back patio lately. Now that we’ve had a few warm days, the leaves on the trees have finally sprouted and the sun shining through all that greenery this afternoon just made me smile.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
