This little sprig of alstroemeria broke off a newly purchased bouquet about three weeks ago. I didn’t want to toss them, so I put them in a wine glass. They’re still going strong. I have three bouquets in vases scattered around the apartment and this morning I found myself wondering if they would still be going strong when I have to move back home on Saturday. And then what will I do? Answer: take them home, of course.
I seem to be going through a bout of insomnia. I’ve been taking a nice hot bath, reading a bit in bed, and then…I’m awake for 3 or 4 hours. It’s maddening. Thankfully, I slept until 9 this morning, so I don’t feel as fried as I did yesterday. And yes, I heard my neighbor coming home, but I was already sleepless so I can’t blame it on her! It’s me, I fear.
I don’t have a lot of exciting news to share with you. My days are fairly full of rehearsals and performances. In fact, I have to make this rather short so that I have time to email my notes to the actors.
It’s sunny today – huzzah! – which always makes me happy. Don is protesting today at a NY State Senator’s office about the attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin and several other notables are holding a mass rally at the Trump International Hotel in NYC on Thursday evening at 6:00. I’m not sure whether Don is going to that or not, but I passed the information on to him. I can’t march in the Women’s March, sadly, as I have to move home that day, but I know of so many women who are marching, either in Washington DC or in other cities across the country. Bravo! I’m with you in spirit.
Today: I’m watching the matinee at 2:00, then I’m coming back to the apartment, making dinner and settling down to watch Sherlock at 7 pm. To those of you who watch Sherlock: it’s on earlier this week because PBS is premiering Victoria at 9. Victoria doesn’t interest me. I know, I know, you think I’m crazy. But I’ve seen my fill of historical period costume dramas over the years (and remember, I work in a world that is full of sets and costumes and period details.) They just don’t interest me. As Don says: I don’t have any more rental space in my head for a new mini-series. I sort of feel the same way.
But I do plan on watching one of my all-time favorite movies on Monday night, It Happened One Night. I picked this up at Barnes & Noble a few weeks back. Don and I love this movie and I decided it should be in our personal library. Plus, after living in this space for a few weeks, I discovered there was a DVD player. (It’s so small and compact that I mistakenly thought it was a modem!) So I’m all set for my day off.
Happy Sunday.
Wendy T says
Enjoy your MLK day off! I like that movie too but don’t have it in my collection. Lots of other old movies but not that one.
Claudia says
Same here, which is why I finally bought it!
tana says
Thanks for the heads up on Sherlock. I thought it was just the rerun from last week and the new one would be on at 9pm. Boy, would I have been in for a disappointment!
This morning on CBS Morning show, they had a piece on doll houses. Dr. Ruth has doll houses and I heard a little about her childhood. Being a Jew in Nazi Germany. Very interesting.
Good for Don.
Enjoy your last week in Hartford.
Claudia says
Oh, I’m so glad I mentioned the time change!
I’ll go online and see if I can find that segment on dollhouses, Tana! Thanks.
Donnamae says
I’ve got Sherlock and Victoria scheduled to be recorded. What can I say…I’m a sucker for Masterpiece! I hope you are really able to enjoy this last week in Hartford…provided you get enough sleep! Happy to hear about Don too! ;)
Claudia says
I will enjoy it, I’m sure. I love hearing the audience laughter during the show. It’s lovely! We all need that right about now.
melissa farley says
It’s raining here in West Texas, always a blessing. I am ordering embroidery patterns, reading book reviews, doing the Sunday crossword and TRYING to be optimistic. Jane Pauley on Sunday Morning makes me really happy. (These are the “happy” thought I could not get together for your post earlier in the week.)
Claudia says
I’m about to print out the Sunday NY Times crossword, Melissa. One of my favorite things to do! I’m glad Jane Pauley in on Sunday Morning. I’ve always liked her.
Carolyn Marie says
Do you think your insomnia is caused by the looming of the innauguration? I am experiencing sleep problems as are many of my friends. Just a thought.
I am so glad to hear that Don is actively involved in the resistence. We must all stick together. Yes we can.
Definitely take the flowers home with you! Peace
Claudia says
I’m sure that’s part of it. So much going on right now for me – living away from my home, the pressures of work, the inauguration, the revelations about Putin/Russia and the fact that this man has a very tainted ‘victory.’ And worry about the country and our future.
Thanks, Carolyn Marie.
Lesley says
I’ll be with the marchers in spirit, too.
By the way, one thing about ‘Victoria’. Rufus Sewell is in it, and I’ll watch him anytime.
Blessings
Claudia says
I like Rufus Sewell. I’ve seen him on the previews. Thanks, Lesley.
Nancy in PA says
Lesley, thanks for the tip about Rufus Sewell; he is easy on the eyes, isn’t he?
I guess I’ll tune in, after all.
Claudia, regarding “Victoria,” wouldn’t it be fun for you to see some of the locations, in anticipation of your plans to travel to England?
That’s pretty funny, about discovering the DVD player after all this time. Sounds like me.
Claudia says
I’ve been to England three times and to Scotland, as well, and I’ve seen a lot of location shots! I’m okay on that end.
Honestly, that DVD player looks so small, and it’s black – it wasn’t until I looked more closely that I realized it was a DVD player. It makes our DVD player look positively prehistoric!
Mary says
I too thought the 7pm Sherlock was a repeat, glad I read your blog today! I have no interest in Victoria anyway. Maybe it is the actress, she is Clara on Doctor Who to me! Some actors become only remembered for a certain role. I think it takes a great one to change for each role. But you would know more about this than me. Meryl Streep pops into my mine as an actress who becomes the character…over rated really!!!!!!!!
Claudia says
Meryl Streep is definitely one of the best actresses I’ve ever seen. She completely transforms. (I think the term overrated is better applied to a certain man who will not be named!)
Mary says
oops, mind not mine.
Claudia says
xo
Leslie says
So sorry that you are struggling with insomnia right now. As an introvert who has to function as an extrovert, I have struggled with insomnia forever. Nothing is as important to me as a good night’s sleep! I feel your pain.
Have fun with your movie night—watching one of my favorites! I have been catching up on my very favorites, recorded during the Christmas season when there was no time to watch them. Today I have “The Bishop’s Wife” and my all-time Christmas go-to, “Christmas in Connecticut”. That, some cocoa and popcorn, and I am set! I wish you the joy of your movie night.
Peace.
Claudia says
I love both of those movies and try to watch them every Christmas season, though I couldn’t this year because I was here working and they don’t have TCM on our cable package!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I’ve been having unsettling dreams the last few nights and I’m thinking its all the stress as we get closer to the 20th. So proud of Don for protesting. I’ll do something on Friday, just not sure what. I will watch Victoria as I love period dramas. I need to go back and catch up on Sherlock, can’t believe I’ve never watched it. Reading today and resting. The day is warm and the windows open for fresh air. I hope you can get some sleep soon.
hugs!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Just to let you know I’ve just watched the Season 1 episode 1 of Sherlock! Wow, I was hooked 15 minutes into it. Love it, so clever and great acting!
Claudia says
You’ll love all of it, Linda.
Claudia says
Oh, you’ll be hooked once you start in on Sherlock. I just finished watching the season ender on PBS. It had me on the edge of my seat! I’m exhausted!
Marilyn says
Enjoy “It Happened One Night”. Claudette Colbert is one of my favorite actresses. Of Course Barbara Stanwyck and Gena Rowland with Loretta Young,Jane Wyman,Joan Bennett and the above mentioned Ms.Colbert are right up there in the talent department.
Claudia says
Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert and Jean Arthur are my favorites of that time period. Thanks, Marilyn!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Love that movie!! Have watched it so many times!!
I agree with Friday looming out there, and my stomach and my BP are horrible. I have been reading a lot, but sleep is not easy to find. I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise when we know that the world as we know it is about to come to a screeching halt. The things he said this weekend about Rep. Lewis made my skin crawl. Proudly, we received an email this AM from one of our Representatives, Mark Pocan, and he will NOT be attending the horror show on Friday. He WILL be in town on Saturday to march in Madison. That made me happy.
Have a good remainder of your day today, and enjoy your day off tomorrow. We all need to take a few minutes tomorrow and ponder Dr. King and his life and legacy. This is just all too over-whelming and so very sad.
Claudia says
I was so enraged about his tweets about John Lewis. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that ass had no idea who John Lewis was, or, at the very least, had not idea what he has fought for and what a hero he is. Good for your representative. I think some of our Senators should boycott the inauguration as well. It has become very clear that Russia interfered with our election and I know that somehow, someway, we’re going to find that Trump and his cronies were in on it.
Janet in Rochester says
Claudia, I know you’re not alone in having sleep problems. I bet the country as a whole is experiencing a real spike right now. A trend that could continue for a while. Adjusting to a new ‘zeitgeist’ is always difficult, especially when it’s as full of insecurity & unknowns as this one. My mom was only a few weeks past her 9th birthday when Pearl Harbor happened, but she had 3 siblings 10 or more years older than her and I remember her telling me how uneasy she was during the first months of the war, because she was clearly able to pick up on her family’s feelings and reactions. I was pretty anxious myself when Reagan was elected in 1980. I remember arriving at school the morning after the 1980 election & walking in from the parking lot with my best teacher friend, one of the 2nd grade teachers. We were both pretty much freaking out about nuclear war. Of course, everything is relative, but you don’t learn THAT until you’ve been around long enough. Now I’ve give all I own to have solid, steady, SANE Ronald Reagan back.
PS – a sleeping tip my Dad told me about that actually works pretty well. Once you get comfortable in bed, force yourself to remain ABSOLUTELY STILL in that position. Don’t move a muscle. You really have to concentrate for a few minutes but I’ve found I usually fall sleep fairly quickly when I’m able to freeze myself. Nothing scientific of course, but my theory is that the body just grows bored & nods off. Who knows? Oh and bonus – no drugs!
#ThisIsNotNormal
Claudia says
Oh, truly. Ronald Reagan would be a welcome relief right now. Trump posted a photo of him shaking hands with Reagan many years ago and I replied that Reagan was “currently rolling over in his grave.”
What an insane week we have ahead.
Janet in Rochester says
Just saw something interesting on Twitter that others might want to know. For those who don’t plan to watch the Inaugural ceremonies on TV, It’s still important to TURN ON THE TV ON FRIDAY. Just be sure you’re TUNED TO A STATION NOT CARRYING COVERAGE. This will result in lower viewership stats for the Trump inaugural. If sets are NOT ON, the stats will not correctly reflect that people AREN’T watching. Some techy thing. Again, even if you won’t be home or watching on Friday, TURN ON YOUR TV – to a station NOT carrying coverage. Hope this is helpful. 🇺🇸
#ThisIsNotNormal
Claudia says
I’m not sure which of these things is accurate. I’ve seen ‘turn off the tv’ and I’ve also seen what you’ve mentioned here. I need to research this!
Dianne says
Alstroemeria are a happy flower; you can count on them to bring an upbeat feeling and a smile wherever they are…….
.For certain we need to be aware that many millions of us, not only in the US but worldwide are united in our belief that all the Orange man represents is unacceptable and actually deplorable. That awareness of our connection to each other is essential to our well being and reinforces the strength and resolve we need to stand firmly united. It is soooo easy to become lost in anger regarding the injustices of hateful Trump and his cohorts. But millions of us are right here watching and staring at him with disgust. There isn’t any way for him to escape himself and the truth about all that he is.
Regarding Victoria; so much has already been covered in books, film, and TV about her that many of us will be wary. Have read books , seen BBC programs, and her life in general and detail has been covered. Besides Judy Dench was the perfect Victoria.
Enjoy the efforts of your hard work on the play!…….Dianne
Claudia says
No, and that truth is becoming more and more evident. I’ve read about voters having ‘buyer’s remorse’ – actually, it should be voter’s remorse as they learn more and more about him.
Yes, I know a fair amount about Victoria and these things are always a writer’s idea of the subject’s life. How close to reality it is is debatable. It’s more of a chance for a costume and set extravaganza. I’m sure it will be beautifully done. The Brits are so amazing with this sort of thing.
sandy says
Bravo to the protesters! 200 bus parking permit requests for Inauguration Day. 1200 bus parking permit requests for the day after!
Claudia says
I read that! Take that, Orange Man!
Judy Shaw says
Enjoy your day off!
Claudia says
Thank you, Judy!
Kim in Maryland says
I will be marching in DC on Saturday. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t. I will never accept Comrade Chump as my president.
Last month I went to DC to visit the new African American History Museum. The last exhibit that I saw that day was a display of all of the many different posters and ephemera of President Obama’s two elections. I stood there taking it all in and soon found that tears were running down my face. I stood there and mourned for the election results, for what we were losing, for what was coming and so much more. I still feel like this must be a very bad dream and I just need to wake up and it won’t be true.
On Friday I plan to buy flowers, bake cookies, make Mexican food for dinner, listen to Indigo Girls and make my poster for Saturday. I will not watch any coverage of what is going on in DC that day. Thank you Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis for showing us the power of peaceful resistance. We will overcome!
Claudia says
Good for you, Kim! How I wish this was a bad dream. It’s utterly mind-boggling that such a great legacy as the one President Obama has given us might be dismantled. Purely, for the most part, out of spite.
I will not watch any coverage of Friday’s events. I will not read anything about it in the paper. I will honor our outgoing President and those who will fight this pathetic excuse for a human being.
Kaye Smith says
I’ll be proudly marching through Rep. John Lewis’ district in Atlanta on Saturday. Rep. Lewis is a life-long leader, a man of action, and a most beloved Georgian. Thank you DJT for giving our local march turbo-power.
Claudia says
Go for it, Kaye! John Lewis is a hero. That man who will not be named is not fit to shine Lewis’ shoes.
