It’s snowing again. 3 to 5 inches expected today, with the addition of sleet later in the day. Less than an inch overnight.
I have to get to NYC tomorrow. Non-negotiable. So, Don will be manning the snowblower, the car will get parked down at the end of the driveway, I’ll get up early and he will drive me to the train station. The train is better at moments like this because it’s more dependable. The bus travels on the thruway and goes through the Lincoln Tunnel, where there are often delays in bad weather. So, the train it is for tomorrow, which will take me to Grand Central Station with a quick shuttle ride to Times Square.
This snow has been nothing but a pain in the tush for yours truly, as it has fallen during key rehearsal days. But having said that, I’m grateful that the bulk of the snow is falling today, instead of tomorrow!
We watched Hannah And Her Sisters last night on TCM. It is one of our favorite movies. I think it’s Woody Allen at his very best. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen it, but I never grow tired of it. It was just as fresh last night as it was the first time I saw it in a movie theater. Wonderful performances by everyone but Dianne Wiest and Michael Caine are brilliant.
I miss Robert Osborne. TCM just isn’t the same without him. I know he’s had bouts of illness in the past, but this latest stretch without him at the helm of TCM has to have been a least a year. But every time I google the question “Where is Robert Osborne?” I’m referred to articles of 2 or 3 years ago. I assume he isn’t well. Do any of you TCM fans have an update?
As we’re stuck indoors today, I’ll do the usual Sunday chores: washing the sheets and towels, swiffering and vacuuming. I’ll go over my Russian pronunciations for tomorrow’s table work. And I’ll read, of course! The Sunday edition of New York Times and the Deborah Crombie – Garden of Lamentations.
What are you up to today?
Linda @ A La Carte says
It looks like rain here today. I’ll stay in (as I have for days now) and read and rest. I can finally feel some improvement but it’s still a long road to full recovery it seems, but I will get there. I really need to do some laundry today so that might happen. Enjoy your day and get to the city safely! Hugs.

Read and rest. I know you’re probably a wee bit stir crazy but it will pay off when you finally feel better!

Our little bit of snow is melting today and I can see blue sky out the windows. Planning to hang a few more curtains today, finish writing a grant I’m working on for our charity (due this Friday), go over my homework for a course I’m taking as class is this Tuesday and figure out dinner for tonight, as well as the rest of the week. Hoping to go for a walk this afternoon before it gets too muddy. Hope your snow stops soon and your trip in to N.Y.C. tomorrow is just fine. X Chy
Claudia says
Me too. This weather pattern has really stressed me out.
I’m jealous of your melting snow!

Your “get-away plan” for the morning sounds perfect! As you said, glad the snow is falling today instead of tomorrow….although I am never glad when snow is falling. It truly is a 4 letter word in my vocabulary.
Do you stay in NYC this week for rehearsals? Your busy season is upon you!! Would probably be easier if it was in the May-October months for travel, but is always so hard to be away from the gardens ~ as just a few days of not being tended, they tend to become quite naughty with weeds and tangles. But those weeds and tangles do reward us with so much joy!! Have a good Sunday, and safe travels tomorrow!
Claudia says
No, I travel back and forth each day which adds a minimum of 3 hours onto my day. That’s why I mentioned that posting would be a challenge this week. I’ll arrive home at night only to have to go to bed and get up early the next day and do it again.

Driving daughter back to college after her 1-week break. Will miss her! But she’ll be home Easter-time. You have snow and cold. I’m having sun and warmth, but a new rainstorm is coming in later this week. Time to do some yard clean up while it’s dry. Then some time for sewing. My daughter requested lots of things for Spring…four skirts and two tops. I’m glad I’m almost done with one skirt and one top, as they will be my prototypes since she’ll be unavailable for fittings. Hope your travel to NYC works out well. Are you going to continue to commute back and forth or stay in NYC?
Claudia says
Commenting back and forth this week. When we start dress rehearsals and previews, which require late nights, then I’ll stay in the city, Wendy.

Wow, brutal weather and just h*ll to have to be out in it.
We have to go into L.A. over the upcoming holiday weekend and I’m not looking forward to it because of the forecasted RAIN for the entire four days, but I have a relative flying in and I hardly have any relatives left, so it’s important to make the effort. I so wish we had an easier way to get into the city other than auto but any other mode is really inconvenient (you know, SoCalif is the land of the car, to our detriment). So, terrific…clogged freeways in the rain, holiday traffic; ugh. Just dangerous.
I guess you may have seen a stray headline about the huge amount of rain we’re getting in both North and South California. (They totally missed the mark, forecasting another dry winter, but who’s complaining!!) We are SO not used to this, for YEARS. We actually have puddles. It’s a wet mess but, oh, what a glorious mess. As I told you, you’ll be coming to San Diego…even arid San Diego!…with views of GREEN which has been non-existent (like, forever…seems like). I notice the little things, like the shoulders of a road in green; a vacant lot green; of course, people’s lawns green. High meadows in the hills in beautiful spring green. They keep saying (weather-type experts) we still won’t break the drought but we’ve got to be coming closer to it by now.
Well, my hubs just drove up so that’s how I’m spending the rest of the day today; with my guy.
Take care, tomorrow, Claudia; you seem to be planning everything really well. Prepared!
Oh, Robert Osborne. Yes, I miss him. He didn’t seem well in his last appearances; kind of shaky in the voice, like he was maybe struggling for air (lungs or heart?). I’ve read a lot of nice things about him. He’s up there in years now, I think 80s. He’s certainly allowed to retire. But I do like Ben Mankiewicz; he has sort of grown on me. He’s certainly descended from Hollywood ‘royalty’ and seems to have a good appreciation of film. At first, I found him a bit…what would be the word…snide(?), like almost mocking or being irreverent…but I’m not feeling that as much now.
Claudia says
I had no idea there was any holiday weekend coming up. Makes no difference in my work. We’ll work anyways!
So glad you’re getting lots of rain! Goodness knows you all deserve it!
Ben Mankiewicz is okay. But there’s not a lot of warmth there, which Osborne has in abundance. I think when you’re the host, warmth is a must. I know Mankiewicz’ pedigree is Hollywood (and politics, as well). Still and all, he leaves me a little cold.
Vicki says
Well, if he’s not TOO arrogant, and with time, maybe he’ll ‘warm’ to the job and you’ll warm up, to him!
But I know what you’re saying. I feel similarly about the CBS News’ ‘Sunday Morning’ show which I’ve watched for such a long time (hasn’t it been on TV for something close to 40 years?), first with Charles Kuralt and then Charles Osgood. Now they’ve put Jane Pauley in there and I know this sounds harsh, but I absolutely cannot stand her and never could, even when she was on the TODAY show. I’d decided to take Sunday Morning off my DVR effective with her start date, but it’s such a tradition with me, watching that show, and I enjoy the other correspondents…to where I’ve relented…on playback, I just fast-forward on the remote when she’s got the spotlight and is speaking. Her reader-voice, to me, is so affected (pretentious); I find it unpalatable. I’m sure off camera she’s probably a lovely person but I simply cannot take her on air.

I have been Googling to find out about Robert Osborne, too. We really miss him and are very concerned about his health. We so enjoy TCM and he has always been the heart and soul of that channel. I haven’t been able to find out anything about his absence, but we wish him the very best!
Claudia says
I know. Years ago, Don and I would say “What will happen when Robert Osborne is no longer on TCM??” And now, it’s happened. I hope he’s hanging in there. He wouldn’t have stopped his work unless he had to.
Janet in Rochester says
Watched “Hannah” last night too. Love that movie. It’s so natural & seamless – like the camera just followed the characters around in their daily lives without them ever knowing. Real life kind of stuff. And the best dialogue! Those actors don’t seem to be acting at all, just BEING. I read that the scenes in Hannah’s apartment – the Thanksgivings that open and close the film etc – were filmed in Mia Farrows’s actual apartment. I bet she actually cooks too. I miss Robert Osbourne as well. I like the new people – and Ben M – but I’ve been watching TCM since I first got cable in the mid 90s, and it seemed to Robert was ALWAYS on. I started to wonder how much he could tape ahead of time – it didn’t even seem like he took vacation! Regardless, I hope he’s feeling better and will be back soon. Or not. Maybe he’s finally ready to retire & take it easy. He’s more than entitled. He was born the same year as my mother which makes him 85 this year [although physically he looks about 60]. Whatever he chooses, he should do what makes him happy. He’s been the face of TCM, like Walter Cronkite was the face of CBS. I was rather lazy last week reading a lot – and putting off laundry – so I have a small mountain of it waiting for me in the laundry room. Peace.

Yes, it was filmed in her apartment. Wonder if she still lives there? It’s a beautiful piece of filmmaking.
I miss Robert Osborne, but like you, I hope he’s happily retired. Though I think if he had ‘happily retired’ we would have read an announcement about it. Ben is okay, but I don’t know if there is anyone who has the depth of knowledge about the history of film that Osborne does. Maybe there never will be. Sigh.

Today is a quiet day, a cloudy, humid day with 80-degree temperatures. George and I made vegan chili. I’ve spent some time on Khan Academy, taking mastery tests on the mathematics classes I’ve been studying for my own enjoyment and looking over the schedule of computer-related courses. I practiced Tai Chi for a few minutes, using the CD I purchased from my instructor. It’s wonderful to be able to take a class again, now that my brain surgery was so successful. This master is taking a group to Macchu Picchu in June, and I’ve been dreaming of going, a resurrected dream from the time when such a dream would have been impossible. Finances will probably prohibit me from going, but it’s fun to dream about anyway. I’ve been revising the novel I began years ago but could never finish because of illness and the demands of my job. I had YA books published in the mid 1990’s both here and in Germany, but my agent left the business and my publisher was gobbled up by another company, so that I lost my editor, too. Being orphaned in publishing, especially when you’re a back-list kind of writer at best, adds extra challenges, and now the entire publishing world has changed. It’s freeing. I don’t know if this new novel, an adult novel, will ever be published, so I’m working on spec, just enjoying the process. I have some word recall issues, and I’ve noticed humiliating problems with my editing skills, but I can take my time. Oh, and I’m writing my two postcards today to be mailed off to my U.S. senators tomorrow, with plans to call them and state representatives tomorrow.
Claudia says
Bless you, Linda. I’m so happy to hear that you’re feeling better and are finally able to enjoy those things you’ve missed and to take on new challenges. You put us all to shame! xoxo

We spent the day dealing with the snow and watched SNL which we recorded. I also received notice that the t shirt and onesie I ordered from etsy for my 2 granddaughters has shipped with part of the proceeds going to the ACLU. Yeah!
I’ve never been a fan of message tees but this grandma can’t wait to show those babies off in their new ” nevertheless, she persisted! ” duds. Love etsy!

I hope you have smooth travel as you go to the city tomorrow! We are on a weather rollercoaster here in Illinois, freezing cold & snow on one day, 60 degrees the next, high winds & falling temps today…I don’t know how to dress!
