A quick post this morning as I’m getting ready to head into the city.
The other day I saw two groundhogs emerge onto the shed ramp. They proceeded to play with each other like animals do, wrestling, standing on their hind legs and batting at each other.
Has Henry had more kids? I’m not sure, but they definitely emerged from under the shed. One of them looked older than the other, so perhaps one was a parent. The bigger one sure looks a lot like Henry.
I was only able to get a few pictures with my special lens – they were way across the yard.
Gosh darn it, they were cute. We’ve had babies before but I usually see some sign of them when they’re very small.
Peony update:
We’re not supposed to have rain until Wednesday, so they should stay intact for a while.
I’ll try to post from the city. I’m not taking my laptop but Don has one. Or maybe I’ll take it. I haven’t decided yet. If you don’t hear from me tomorrow and Tuesday, I’ll be back on Wednesday. I’m starting to think it’s healthy to take a day or two off every once in a while.
Happy Sunday.

I definitely feel you should take days off from this blog. If it feels like a leash or obligation or job, I’d think it could steal your joy of sharing/writing. You need to concentrate all your effort on NYC and Don when you’re there as these remaining days with the apartment, city sights & destinations and community garden et al are pretty darn precious. We’ll see you when you get back. Breaks in a routine can indeed be very healthy. For you, the trips into the City right now are like mini-vacations for you, so have yourself some summer fun this week.

Thanks for sharing the ground hog photos. I don’t see them where I live, but I did see a ground squirrel the other day on my walk. It was sitting on a low post so it could reach some tasty vegetation that grows (was planted in the landscaping) along the shoreline walking path. It paid no mind to my friend or me, just kept nibbling. I haven’t found out what the plant is, but the pieces in its little paws looked like (but definitely weren’t) small heads of broccoli. The plant had large cone-shaped flowers that are made of tiny green stiff flowers. It was these flowers the squirrel was eating. We touched the flowers on a plant further along so we wouldn’t scare him from his salad, and the flowering part is prickly. We were amused that along the trail, everywhere there was a low post, the cones that were reachable by a ground squirrel were all chewed up. Taking a break is good for you! Just be with Don!

Our mental health is a precious commodity. It seems that everything in the world is trying to diminish its light. The news this week has shown us that it goes so much deeper than money and fame and “things”. So, take every minute away that you are able to do so. When you think you need a break, you definitely do. We all need to encourage each other and learn to live in the moment. Of course it isn’t that simple, but it is a very tiny step. Enjoy your time!!!!

Cute shot of your playing ground hogs! By all means…take a few days for you and Don. You certainly deserve it! It is cold here…60’s…and wet. What a spring. Enjoy your visit…get a good dose of the city garden! ;)

sweet photos of the groundhogs having fun. sometimes when i think of animals, i think about their beauty or how they build nests or do other things, how they have to always be on guard against people and cars … so your photos are a reminder that they have fun, too (good). thank you.
i don’t know how you have – for many years – fit in daily posts here along with all the yardwork, snow-shoveling, other housework, trips to nyc and the rest of life (thanks for taking the time to do that) and understand if you want or need to post less frequently. i agree with everyone else that you deserve a break and hope you take one. not just for the next couple days with don in nyc, but whenever you want/need. we’ll be here when you get back. :)

Good for you, Claudia! It IS good to take a break every once in a while. Even from things we love to do. Frankly I’ve always been amazed that you can manage to post every day. And always something worth reading too. But very glad to hear you’re giving yourself a break every so often too. Hope you find them very restorative. Loving those peonies – and Henry et al too. Super cute. Peace.

Enjoy your day! I loved the photo of you and Mere on her blog. We had a great morning: our church choir premiered a commissioned piece with wonderful brass accompaniment. You would have loved it as it was “A Justice Cal”l and perfect for these troubled times.

Good morning,
Those little creatures are so darn cute!
Regarding the Peonies; are they deer resistant? In my neighborhood, there are bands of roving deer and they eat anything and everything that’s not caged. I only have room outside the fenced areas of my yard. Any insight?
Thank you,
Deb

Hey Claudia — watching the Tonys last night was bittersweet for me. There was so much joy and calls of inclusiveness and yet I thought of the joy of EFM (I haven’t seen it — it’s just been 20 seconds here and there and I’m not remotely a Parrothead but I know joy when I see it!). The Tonys are epically long but wouldn’t it be wonderful if all first year musicals (still running) get a couple of minutes on stage? As Sara and Josh pointed out in the opening, there have been amazing shows that didn’t win.
