Sunrise, this morning. The sun comes up over the back forty, so we have this consistently lovely view of the intense colors without the interference of tall buildings or houses.
We’re due for some rain today. But it was sunny for much of the day yesterday so I guess I can give up some sunshine for some water.
I read two chapters of War and Peace this morning because I didn’t read yesterday’s chapter. Now I’m caught up. If you’re interested in reading one of the classics and it’s large and weighty – for instance, Crime and Punishment, or Anna Karenina, or Les Miserables – and you’re put off by the sheer size of the book, I cannot recommend this ‘chapter a day’ method enough. There are also readalongs for Les Miserables and Anna Karenina going on in the Book/Instagram community. I’m also reading my main book at the same time, but I don’t consider this ‘reading two books at once.’ Really, a chapter a day is hardly trying to handle two books at the same time. It’s easy. It took me about 10 minutes to read those two chapters this morning. And I was done for the day. It’s fun to do this with a community of other readers, but you could easily do it on your own. I wish I’d thought of this possibility a long time ago. I’m a one-book-at-a-time reader, so, if I had picked this book to read in the past, I would have felt committed to it for the duration. This way, I can keep reading as I normally do, and just carve out a few minutes a day to read War and Peace. Not really genius, but close to it! I’m proud to say that Don is keeping up with his daily read of W & P as well, and, at times, he’s ahead of me! And Don doesn’t usually read novels.
I’m halfway through the newest Louise Penny and fully in its grip. I read a chunk of it yesterday afternoon.
I have lots of little things to do today and I also feel the need to dress a doll or two. I’ve been rather lazy about that lately.
I keep thinking it’s Friday, but it’s Thursday. Yesterday, I thought it was the weekend. The life of the semi-retired. Or: the life of the freelancer. Same thing.
Stay safe.
Happy Thursday.

What a beautiful sunrise! At first glance it looked like a fire in the distance…glad it was the sunrise! The way you’re reading W & P sounds a bit like homework, enjoyable homework, and then you can get that done and move on to another good book! We’re have cold mornings and pleasant afternoons lately. Have fun with dressing the girls!
Claudia says
It’s not even homework, really! I was never a fan of homework. More like reading the headlines in the newspaper.
Stay safe, Barrie.

wow …beautiful photo and colors, claudia! do you mind if i try to draw/paint it? please and thanks.
glad you and don are enjoying “war and peace” and for you the latest louise penny book, too. one book at a time here.
tuesday was repeatedly saturday for me; all through the day i kept thinking it was saturday … even after having a brief mention of it with my sister (who was feeling similarly). funny how days can get feelings to them like that.
bit of rain here overnight, too … not the three to possibly six inches of snow that was forecast. most of the beautiful snow that’s been on the ground for weeks will now be gone.
working on a long to-do list here, too. good luck to all of us!
happy, safe thursday to everyone.
kathy
Claudia says
Not at all. Go ahead and paint it!
Stay safe, Kathy.

Beautiful sunrise. I love the ink and wash look of skies through bare trees.
Claudia says
I do, too.
Stay safe, Shanna.
Donnamae says
Gorgeous sunrise. I’m wondering though, if you looked at it without commentary, could it also be a sunset…perhaps?
I know you discuss War and .peace with Don. I’m also wondering about the W & P group you joined…do you discuss the book as a group?
Guess I’m just in a wondering mood. It’s snowing here…3-5 inches? But. who really knows? I just wish it would leave here, and go quickly to you, so you can enjoy it…lol! ;)
Claudia says
I’m sure it could be a sunset, as well. But those deep purples, etc, happen consistently with the sunrise, but not with the sunset.
The W & P thing is on Instagram and it consists of over 1000 people who are doing the readalong. There’s also a discussion group on a separate app called ‘Discord.’
Always good to be in a wondering mood, Donnamae! No snow in the forecast for the next two weeks. Don read several articles about the historic lack of snow in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states. If we’re not going to get any snow, can we just go to Spring now?
Stay safe.
Elaine in Toronto says
That’s a beautiful sunrise with the black branches against the sky. Have fun playing dolls. Hope you will share some pictures tomorrow. Can never get enough of the girls. I think a little fashion show might be in order. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
Photos of the dolls on Saturday. I had to share the dollhouse today.
Stay safe, Elaine!

Claudia: For a little chuckle. MANY years ago (in my early 20s . . . yikes! . . . 45 years ago) I was working as a waitress and arrived home just in time for the Johnny Carson show, which I routinely watched. Anyway, one morning I woke up and had absolutely no idea what day it was. Not a clue . . . but I knew that I had watched Johnny Carson the previous night. So I went to the TV Guide and looked at each night to see who was going to be on the show . . . and that is how I figured out what day it was. C
Claudia says
Ha! We do what we have to do, right? It worked!
Stay safe, Chris.

dear Claudia/Don — totally sympathetic w/forgetting what day it is — all of them usually seem to be alike around here!! today, weather broke a record by getting to 73 degrees but we have had terrible winds all day w/gusts over 60 mph — so far only lost electricity once for a few minutes which is amazing hoping this wind will soon lessen. will the girls ‘pose’ for pixs after getting “all dolled” up??? hope so stay safe/healthy
Claudia says
I find that when it gets unseasonably warm, winds almost always accompany that weather change. Sorry you had such strong winds, Linda. The girls (some of them) will be featured tomorrow.
Stay safe.
Suzanne says
After having suffered through many book clubs, my friend and I started our own two person club. We choose a book and meet on Sunday afternoons at our local coffee shop to discuss one chapter. We are obviously in no hurry to finish our chosen book so we sit and chat after dissecting our current chapter. This gives us an opportunity to do all our other more recreational reading at home while having deep discussions about meatier tomes. It works for us!
Claudia says
That’a a perfect way to read a book and have the support of a good friend, as well!
Stay safe, Suzanne.

I think the Chapter a Day idea is pretty brilliant and I might try that with The Forsyte Saga, which has been sitting on my shelf since PBS launched the remake of the series decades ago! Ah, the days when you went to the annual meeting trade shows and hospitality suites and came home with a suitcase full of books, CDs, DVDs and stuffed animals!
I just celebrated belated Christmas with my friend Suzanne and now my bookstack has grown by five or six! And I still don’t have the Penny because I feel too guilty to order it till I trim down a few volumes! Besides, as you so well know, Penny anticipation is a find thing!
Claudia says
Penny anticipation is the best!
Yes, try it on the Forsyte Saga, Jeanie. Sound perfect!
Stay safe.
