Surprise Flower

November 2, 2022 at 8:55 am by Claudia

A pansy emerged from the urn that is currently full of dead leaves. I noticed it yesterday. I love these late in the season surprises. I planted these in the early spring and there haven’t been any flowers for quite a while. That made my day yesterday.

We have yet to get our flu shots. We saw a sign in the grocery store pharmacy the other day saying they were currently overwhelmed by prescriptions, vaccinations, etc. So we held off. We’ll call today and see if anything is available.

And speaking of vaccinations, stay safe. More positive cases in the cast. There are understudies, of course, but the key point here is: these people are careful. Unless onstage performing, they’re wearing masks. The audience is required to wear masks. And still…

Covid is very much with us and it remains a threat. So many times when I go out, I am one of a few people, if not the only one, wearing a mask. No one confronts me or anything like that. People around here don’t seem fazed if you’re wearing a mask, thank goodness. I realize I’m preaching to the choir here; nevertheless, be careful out there.

Lots of work on the puzzle yesterday. Don was writing a new song. Both of us were totally immersed in what we were doing for a long time. Then we stayed up too late watching something on tv and Don kept snoring and I woke up coughing and the result is that I’m not feeling very rested today.

This, too, shall pass.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

the pansy is lovely and yes, a happy find!

hope you and don can get flu shots soon. and rested. hope you both feel better soon!

agree about covid concerns and being one of only a small number of people who still wear masks in stores and other businesses. will get the third booster but am holding off a while. got my flu shot yesterday.

liked hearing that you and don were “immersed” in projects you enjoy … a good thing. and something i haven’t had in a long time but am going to try for with painting again, maybe more counted cross-stitch, too.

new roof scheduled to be put on my building tomorrow. means moving my car out of the garage by 7:00 am and parking on the street for a day (no big deal) and lots of noise, but all for a good cause. hope they can finish it in one day as there’s a 70% chance of rain on friday and i don’t want any leaks (i live on the top floor).

hope you, don and everyone else have a good day.

    stay safe, everyone!

Seasonal flu is always with us and with Covid on top, well, like you said, preaching to the choir. We are still wearing our masks when we go out too. And like you, we are not confronted. Seems everyone is used to it. At least with our vaccine, if we do catch it, hopefully it will be mild. I have flowers blooming too, but it is going to get very cold next week. So I am enjoying them while I can. You and Don stay well. Drink lots of fluids. With fluids we all pee a lot and that will move the bad stuff through our bodies quickly. It is easier for me to drink water if I heat it and drink it in a mug. Summer or winter. Isn’t that crazy?

A couple of “volunteer” violas have appeared in an otherwise empty flowerpot on my back deck, and they’re blooming. Such a wonderful surprise, and how my heart is gladdened each time I look out the kitchen window. The “little things” in life have such a big impact these days.

Still wearing a mask when I’m out & about and not being confronted, for which I’m thankful.
Covid booster received and will be getting my flu shot soon.

Hope you have a quiet, restful day.
    Stay safe & well.

Just wondering if Don has had a sleep study for his snoring. I did and had dangerous sleep apnea which can be dangerous for heart and stokes. I stopped breathing almost 100 times per hour. I use a CPAP machine now nightly and have for years. He might want to ask his doctor about it.

It can be a serious health problem

He doesn’t snore very often and when he does it’s because he’s stuffed up. It really isn’t an issue, Sharon.

Yeah, I’m Covid-boostered now (Sept); seasonal-flu vax’d (Oct); pneumonia vax is still good; doc wants me to have shingles vax and then there’s talk of monkeypox vax; yikes, enough!

I’m getting out in public more now (carefully-selected as to WHERE), but I’m never not masked as is my husband. I think there will be people who get Covid who’ll regret their resistance to a mask, especially at this time of year. I’m just glad, too, that it protects me from getting somebody’s cold germs. I’m immune-vexed; so, when I get a cold, it takes me down for a long time and if I can avoid that by protecting myself with a mask? You betcha.

      Monkey pox? Probably not needed.

I agree about masks, it keeps all sorts of other air-borne viruses away.

      Stay safe, Vicki.

Oh, believe me, I’m not going for the monkeypox thing. It’s just that my sister-in-law is a former nurse and in the area of the U.S. where she lives (or I guess where some of her family lives), monkeypox is beginning to affect all segments of the population; so, she’s mulling it for herself (she’s not sure yet; I mean, she wasn’t ‘racing’ to do it; just came up in conversation; it’s a sort of ongoing conversation as we all check in with each other by phone). My family doctor’s nurse/RN did say to me on my last visit (here in Southern Calif, last month) that they are now just automatically eyeballing patients when they come into the medical office; she said, for instance, they’ll check someone’s arms for ‘the pox’ right at the same time they do vitals, such as taking a blood-pressure reading and your temperature (but they didn’t check MY arms; by the way, I didn’t inquire; she voluntarily relayed this info while we were speaking of something else, probably contagious flu which is really popping out here; again, a case for masks!).

‘Everybody’ I seem to know of my age has had a shingles shot except me and my husband. We’ve both had chicken pox which is I guess a susceptibility criteria, so my husband’s doctor and mine are both advocating the vaccine; I guess we go to CVS for it and it’s in two phases, and you do have to get periodically boosted. I know how bad it can be, because my mother had shingles and it was just awful for her; very painful. My elderly neighbor got shingles but wasn’t affected so badly as Mom. You’d think I would, in fact, RUN to get the shot for it after seeing my mother suffer, but I think we’re feeling a bit over-vax’d (in general) at the moment, husband and me (although, clearly, how lucky are any of us to have something that can fight horrible virus, bacteria, infectious disease, etc.; the science is amazing and lifesaving).

Donnamae’s comment: I do worry somewhat about where I am on boosters for things like whooping cough, polio or whatever all those shots were that we got when kids (or when I was a young adult, for travel overseas; I used to keep up with it and carry some sort of international vax certificate which I could present to ‘authorities’ if need be [I tended to vacation or travel on business to those sorts of climes {tropics/south of the equator rather than, say, Northern U.S. or Northern countries outside the U.S. … well, I have to think about that, because I was still mostly northern hemisphere; anyway … }; I do remember getting ‘big shots’ for tropical diseases and I did get exposed to hepatitis in Brazil although it was inconclusive; like, I was in quarantine for a couple of weeks back in the U.S. and was forbidden to leave my apartment but didn’t get symptoms; frankly, all these years later, I just can’t remember all the details … !! … {ask me now what those big-gun shots were for travel in South America .. ?? .. couldn’t tell ya … and they HURT; but NOTHING was going to keep THIS small-town girl from seeing the beach at Ipanema in Rio!}]).

I don’t even know when I last had a tetanus shot, but I know on some of that stuff, we’re supposed to get some kind of booster every ten years. I guess I’ll ask my family doctor about it one of these days. I did ask once, a long time ago now, and my newer primary-care physician of those days looked dumbfounded when I mentioned diphtheria, so I think I just turned the page. “They” have alternatively been saying for years (medical community) that childhood disease has been on the rise because of anti-vaxxers who refuse to immunize their school-age kids (I have some relatives who are vehemently against immunizations of any kind for any age; they are QUITE vocal about it). But I don’t keep up with it enough to know what I’m talking about (realizing I should be better informed, and that I’m keeping closer track of MY DOG’S immunizations than for myself!).

I just want us all to have a safe winter ahead.

Your pretty little pansy is very brave to be bloomimg in November. Ah, beautiful November. Who knows what the weather is going to be like in November? We could be wearing tees and shorts or mittens and scarves. We saw a couple of cute dandelions blooming in the grass. Because of their tenacity, you kind of hate to yank them out so we left them. We wear our masks when we’re out and about and it never crossed my mind that we might be greeted with objections. So far, so good. Take gentle care. Hugs, Elaine

Your pansy is a delightful surprise. With this mild fall weather we have been having, I’m surprised there aren’t more surprise flowers.

I got both a Covid shot and a flu shot last week. Same day…different arms. I was surprised that I had zero reaction from either…yay. But on My Chart, it says that I’m overdue for a hepatitis shot. I didn’t realize I was supposed to even have one. Wondering if that’s new?

Sounds like you could use a day of rest. Enjoy! ;)

Oh my goodness. I do think there may be a few too many shots being given. But that’s me. Hepatitis surely isn’t that big of an issue? Or monkey pox, as Vicki mentioned? I guess I’m an old lady now, scoffing at all these newly suggested innoculations!

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

We did an errand at a big box home improvement store and noticed that about 90% of the staff were masked, but few of the customers. Tall ceiling, doors open a lot, etc, but I sure wore my mask, as I do anytime I am indoors other than at home. That’s despite having both vaccinations and 3 boosters. After spending the first 2 weeks in June with a very miserable mild case of Covid I’m in no hurry to have another!

Thanks for sharing the pansy; we still have zinnias full of their fabulous technicolor bloom, and of course fall leaves. Won’t last too much longer before it all starts looking like winter!

We are going to have a cold spell come through Phoenix. Today was in the 60’s. Brrrr for us that are not use to those temps. It seems like we went from 100’s to 60’s in no time. Our weather has been very weird this year. I too see a lot of people who have masks. We have managed not to get Covid. Just waiting to see how this election turns out. So much attention on Arizona.
    Take care!

We had our flu shots and the latest vax, we are at # 5 total now, I think. Neither one of us had any reaction to the Covid vax this time, but my arm was sore from the flu shot!! Never had that happen before. Just hope they both do their jobs!!

We have had some lovely 70+ degree days this week with beautiful sunshine. Our lilac bush has budded out, which isn’t a good thing. Supposed to have a rainly 60+ degree weekend. We do need the rain. Hope you get some good rest tonight. That always helps, doesn’t it? Take care.
