Do you see that plastic container full of dog toys?
Scout hasn’t played with them for a few years. Riley stopped playing with them even before that.
But there they sit. I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. They certainly don’t make for an attractive display. They are directly in front of me as I sit in my blogging chair and there’s no denying their presence. Every once in a while, I contemplate getting rid of them. Or hiding them away somewhere in the house.
Can’t do it.
I suppose it must be what parents feel when they contemplate favorite toys that their children have outgrown. We all know my dogs are my children, so I guess I’m just a typical parent.
I think they’ll stay there for a bit longer.
I pulled a lot of weeds yesterday. A lot. The gardens are looking a bit cleaner, thank goodness. I pruned a few bushes. It felt good to be working in the garden after my stint indoors.
This weekend? I’m taking it easy. I’m awaiting the newer version of the Hamlet script which should be arriving in the mail today or Tuesday, so work on that is temporarily on hold.
But I have a lot of reading to do for future book reviews and for me. I have some NY Times crossword puzzles that I haven’t touched yet. I have to check up on my dad. I have some old movies to watch with my husband. Maybe a bit of lawn mowing.
And some flowers to photograph.
What are your plans for this three-day weekend?
(Last day to enter the giveaway for a copy of The Long Way Home by Louise Penny. If you’re interested, stop by Just Let Me Finish This Page. I pick a winner this evening.)
Happy Saturday.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I do know about the toys your kids outgrow! Let them stay there, they aren’t hurting anything I say. Glad you are going to have a relaxing weekend. I’ve got my oldest arriving tonight and then tomorrow we have a family dinner with all of us. I love it when my girls are both with me and now my Mom. I’ve been reading and relaxing but this weekend should prove to be busy. Taking Tiger to lunch today and some Grandma play time. Life is just good!
hugs,
Linda

You’re going to have a lovely weekend, Linda. Have fun with Tiger!

I totally get the bin of toys! I have..hidden away in my closet…a box of clothes all 3 sons wore when they were little. Can’t do it! As far as plans go…wedding today…grilling out on Monday. In between…who knows? ;)
Claudia says
Have a lovely weekend, Donnamae!
Trudy Mintun says
Saving that box of toys sooo very much parent-like. A little bit of my heart broke when I had to finally part with my son’s toys, I kept his favorite one.and my favorite baby outfit.
Keep them where they are for now. If they ever start to hurt your heart too much them move them, but don’t toss them.
I have company coming tomorrow from California. For 10 days. I always stress when she comes. She is my husband’s daughter. She is a white glove cleaner, and my house never has nor will it ever pass that test. I have too many collections, too many books, too many photos for that. She is a minimalist.
Enjoy your weekend. It sounds lovely.
Claudia says
Oh, I know what you mean, Trudy. I get so nervous when people stay with us. I am not a white glove cleaner! But don’t worry. It’s YOUR home.

It’s amazing how we are affected by the simplest of things. I was cleaning up an area in my mudroom and came across a sweater my dog wore as a puppy – I showed it to my DH and we both got a little mushy remembering how tiny he used to be, and what fun he was as a puppy . Anyway, I could not put it away, so I put it in a little shadow box with a puppy photo and it now sits on a shelf, and makes me smile every time I see it.
Claudia says
That’s a lovely idea. I get sad when I think of how much the dogs used to love to play. Now Riley is gone and Scout is too old to care about them anymore. Sigh.
Kathy says
I’d leave the toys right where they are. Try to remember the fun times watching Scout and Riley playing with them. Tomorrow we’re going to an event called The York Foodstruck. There are going to be a lot of food trucks cooking a wide range of foods. There will be local bands too. I think it should be fun but I just get tired of the crowds and noise, so we’ll see how long I make it. Since I got older I find my tolerance level is not what it used to be! Enjoy your weekend.
Claudia says
Have fun. I, too, get tired of noise and crowds fairly quickly these days! I understand.
Janie F. says
I say keep those toys as they remind you of happy times. Those flower pics are so lovely. We went thrifting today. Will have lunch tomorrow with my MIL after church. I have Mon off but Carl works. I may do a bit of redecorating.
Claudia says
Have a great weekend, Janie!
Janet in Rochester says
I think Liz had a wonderful idea. A little shadow box with some of the dogs’ favorite toys will get the plastic box off your floor, plus provide a lot of fond memories every time you look at it. This weekend I will first do the mountain of laundry I’ve been neglecting. Then I think I’ll take advantage of the free tank of gas I got in my new car and go for a nice long drive in the country to farm-gaze. Here in western New York State the farmers are haying right now and if you pass a field that’s being cut, the smell is out-of-this-world. The scent of apples is wafting out of the orchards now too. On Labor Day my brother is having a family steak-and-corn roast. And we’ll make S’mores around his patio fireplace for dessert. Hope you have a great weekend!
Claudia says
Ummmm! I love S’mores! Have a great weekend, Janet.

Your weekend sounds lovely! My family is coming for a week long visit, so I’m finishing with the cleaning and tidying up here, along with some editing work. I love having them here, but I’m an introvert who needs time alone, so visits can be taxing towards the end :). My throat is always hoarse by the time they leave, since I don’t talk nearly as much as I do when they are here. I prefer the company of the quiet farmers and ranchers around here!
Claudia says
I feel the same way when friends or family visit. I need my alone time, and after about 24 hours, I start to go a little crazy!
Tammy says
We are sentimental beings. There will always be a little something that we just can’t let go of. Nothing wrong with that. My weekend is coming to a close. Weather has been horrible with very high humidity. Can’t even stand to step one foot outside so I’ve been inside crocheting, doodling, painting, and today I finally actually cleaned something. Back to school tomorrow and my youngest starts his junior year of high school. Have a wonderful weekend. Tammy P.S. that last photo is awesome :)
Claudia says
So sorry about the humid weather, Tammy! Can’t believe that your youngest is in his junior year of H.S.! Have a good rest of the weekend!
Laura says
It’s your home, Claudia and if you love them being there then that is where they should stay. I bet there are times when you look over at them and smile remembering all the sweet times your babies had with them. Have a wonderful weekend. xo Laura
Claudia says
I think they’ll be there a while longer, Laura, for that very reason. Have a lovely weekend!

Today I’m getting ready to go see a local Amish farmer for some fresh green beans and what ever else looks good..Tomorrow I will be making a big pot of Ham, Green Beans and Potato Soup and Monday will cook on the grill if it doesn’t rain..all three days I will be working on my little office area..I switched a couple of rooms that have a open floor plan and I am adding a little corner by a window for sitting and reading..I enjoy looking out windows and this window faces the creek so you never know what wildlife will show up there..I will be shopping some thrift stores/second hand furniture stores for a comfy high back chair for my reading corner.. I really need the support for my neck as I have a few bulging discs that will appreciate the support..Hopefully I find a nice bargain..Do you and Don cook anything on the grill Claudia??..Fresh veggies on the grill are so good..and about the the toy box..it takes up such a small space in your home..but such a large space in your heart..don’t empty that space dear..Hugs to all..
Claudia says
Your work on the office area sounds like fun, Nancy! I can picture you sitting in a high back chair (maybe a wing chair?) reading and looking out the window.
I gave Don a grill one year. He never has used it. Don’t know why!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Nancy Blue Moon says
Funny Claudia..a wing back is exactly what I was thinking of..who knows with men..lol..tell him those fresh grilled veggies are awfully yummy..lol..and I also grill the big Portabella mushroom caps and eat them on a roll like a burger with grilled onions and whatever else..awesome..I don’t eat meat all the time..it is too expensive..I prefer to use charcoal.. gas just doesn’t taste as good to me..Sweet dreams my friends..

I think you should keep the toys right where they are. Stuffed toys have always been our Sophie’s favorite. She would take one to her bed in the evening, and bring it back out to the living room in the morning. It was the cutest thing! She doesn’t do that anymore, but her favorites are still in a basket in case she changes her mind.
The only thing I have planned this weekend is to dump some of my potted annuals…they’re looking pretty tired! Not too exciting, but that’s the way I like it.
Have a lovely weekend!
Claudia says
Our weekend is much the same. Nothing big. That’s just fine with me! Have a good weekend.
Eileen says
Keep those toys right where Scout can see them. You never know……
We just got back from an all day amazing auction. I got a bunch of odds and ends but my favorite was a hanging cranberry glass Victorian lamp ( or candle holder). I need to do some research but I love it. Tomorrow, a lady is stopping in to look at an old rug loom that I got at a barn sale. She will let me know what material I need and will show me how to use it (I hope). Last but not least….well, maybe least as I don’t do too well with people I don’t know too well, we have our own little “bridge walk” in town. The rest of the state will be doing a bridge walk across the Mackinaw Bridge, we will be walking across the small bridge in town and having a pot luck. Small town life………. I need to adjust.
Enjoy your week end,
Eileen
Claudia says
That Victorian lamp sounds beautiful, Eileen! I love auctions – how I’d love to hang out with you and Woody at one!
Hope you had fun at the Bridge Walk! Love to you and Woody. xoxo

yup, I’m a sentimental mess. I’ve got five rescued Golden Retriever’s worth of doggy toys and I can’t bear to toss them. Each seems to have a story and a memory.
I thought our only doggy now, Missy, didn’t care for toys … but last night she ran into the den to us, with a mushroom softie in her mouth that a friend had made me. It had fallen out of the bookshelf and I meant to put it back and I apparently got distracted and forgot and Missy found it. Time for a trip to the pet store for a softie of her own.
So glad you’re feeling better now and ready for some time in the garden. Enjoy!
Claudia says
How neat to see Missy go for the softie!

What a positively precious photo of Miss Scout sleeping close to her toys. Who knows? Maybe she dreams about playing with them :-) Our senior canine mister surprised me today and did something he hasn’t done since his pup days. He proceeded to shred some newspaper and then looked rather proud of his accomplishment–the silly imp! His toy days are over now, but in his heyday his mission was to seek and destroy the squeaker in any new toy brought into the house. There is nothing wrong with keeping anything that carries a happy memory with it :-) Anyone who tells you otherwise is just an old grump–ha!
Claudia says
He has some scamp in him yet, Jeannine! I remember my parent’s golden, Jason, the absolute sweetest boy ever who never ate anything he shouldn’t, never shredded a toy – once surprised us all by chewing on a dollar bill he found on the floor. We were stunned and then we all laughed out loud!

No special plans..just planted 2 perennials that I picked up on sale. Very hot and muggy. Mollie has two baskets of toys..Grabs one occasionally for a tug of war..
