The Culprit

June 28, 2017 at 9:00 am by Claudia

I just mentioned to someone in the comments that I rarely have trouble with deer eating things in my garden.

I spoke too soon.

All the day lilies on the side of the house have been eaten. Several of the brown-eyed susans and some of the phlox have been chomped on.

I think he is the culprit:

This is the guy I shooed away from the side garden bed the other day – where all the day lilies are.

So frustrating! And I forgot to spray any deer repellent, so that part of it is my fault. The only thing saving me from being really depressed is the fact that I’m going away for about 3 weeks, and then I’m going away in August, as well, so I won’t see the garden as much as I normally would.

Speaking of critters, these three bunnies were out and about when I first got up this morning. Chippie was also in view, sunning himself on a rock.

Lots to do before I leave and now that I’m back from NYC, I am shifting into overdrive.

The roadside lilies have begun to bloom. They’re so beautiful.

And there are lots of flashes of red in the garden now that the bee balm is in bloom.

I’m off to start in on my To Do list.

Happy Wednesday.

Darn Deer! I had roses ready to bloom but the deer thought they looked tasty. Sigh! I guess I need some deer spray. Mom’s roses have fared a bit better this year. I’m excited about your trip to San Diego and then the drive home! We should get some fun posts if you find internet along the way. Get busy girl! Hugs!

Sorry to hear about your flowers. But thanks for the reminder about the deer spray. My hostas are shooting up their blooms…and they are a delectable treat for our herd of deer. Work the list…and have fun with it. Your reward comes Monday when you fly off! ;)

He’s been chomping on my big hosta, too. This guy is insatiable!

Yes, but like a mother who loves her child but doesn’t always like him – I’m disappointed in his actions.

Sorry about the deer. They do love those tasty tender flowers. Monday will come fast! Will a friend/neighbor take care of Mockingbird Hill for you?

My friend Noble is going to water my plants – the mowing will have to wait until we get back.

Oh, those pesky, beautiful deer! But day lilies are tasty. Ever tried one? I’m sure you are very busy trying to wrap things up for your trip. Keep calm and carry on.

And hostas, apparently and the top of phlox – even when there isn’t a flower yet.

My students told me to dust my garden with cayenne pepper so that the deer wouldn’t eat everything. It did seem to work (or perhaps it was just coincidence), but at times, it felt like I was just spicing things up for the deer.

My gardens are just too big to dust with cayenne pepper! I’d have to buy a Costco-sized can!

The bunnies here have been eating my basil and assorted flowers….. we have soooo many of them this year. And gophers. Unreal. We have been making at least 1 and sometimes 2 trips daily over the river with them. Keeps us busy!

The eyes on that deer…………… so sweet. And so naughty.

I hope you are crossing things off of your list! I am baking cookies today. Haven’t made any since Christmas, and with the temps barely at 70*, it seemed like a good day to do that. This weather is just crazy! Hope your day has been productive!!

I love the deer, but there is no way I can relocate him! He is a naughty one. I’ve never had this many plants chomped on by a deer. And I’ll be away for at least 2 1/2 weeks, so there’s no way I can keep an eye on him… I just finished spraying the garden with deer repellent. We’ll see if it helps.

No, I don’t think that they make live traps in his size!! Those trips over the river would be pretty awful with that load…. the little gophers are do-able!! I hope the repellent does the job!!

Frustrating. I’m going to have a mass of green things growing in the garden with no flowers if it keeps up.

Unfortunately, when you have a gorgeous garden all the little critters like to enjoy it too! Thankfully, my garden is fenced in so no dear have jumped the fence or ever gotten in to our garden. The bunnies will each things. I just plant a lot of stuff and hope that things will survive.

So far the spray I used seems to be doing the trick. I’ll spray everything once more on Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
