Some mowing, some weeding, some watering, some garden gazing = the recipe for a very nice day. Thursday was simply a beautiful day – sunny and coolish.
Don was gone for the day filming. He didn’t get home until 1 in the morning. Filming anything takes a long time. There’s a lot of waiting around; then the scene has to be filmed, usually with several takes, then it’s filmed again from one actor’s point of view, then again from the other actor’s point of view. He also discovered he was in another scene, with no dialogue on his part, so that scene had to be filmed. But it’s all ‘in the can’ now and he can sleep in today. Can’t wait to hear more about it!
Let’s take a walk around the yard and see what’s happening:
The Bridal Veil spirea is blooming. This bush was here when we moved in; it’s down by the road.
Yellow Archangel (a type of lamium) is just about to burst into bloom. I planted it when we first established the large garden bed. It’s been a trustworthy early spring bloomer ever since.
The catmint is growing by leaps and bounds, as is the sedum and the Veronica, also known as Speedwell. That chartreuse ground cover, Creeping Jenny, has nicely filled in the garden in the two years or so since I planted it. I love that splash of chartreuse in the bed.
I was wrong about my Oriental Poppy. It is going to bloom! You can see a bud tucked down among the leaves. There are others as well. It’s just a little late this year.
Oh boy. You know what’s coming. My peonies have developed buds. This one comes complete with the ever present ant. Despite the late spring, it looks like it will bloom right on schedule during the first week of June.
A sun-dappled view of the left side of the big garden bed.
And if you look closely, you’ll see Scout watching us from the mini corral.
I hope you’re having a good week. I’m so happy Spring is finally here.

Claudia E says
Your garden is looking lovely! My irises and peonies have already bloomed here in Kansas. Now we are enjoying the Japanese iris. I picked some for the house and they smell heavenly. It’s raining again today but it has been so dry that we will take every drop we can get. Thanks for the book, I’m looking forward to reading it.
Claudia says
It’s been terribly dry here. There are burn bans going on because we’ve had no rain.
Doris says
Good Morning Claudia, I had to really look for Scout. She really is blending in where she is standing! A where’s Scout game! LOL Your garden is looking good. Doris
Claudia says
She’s part of the garden, Doris!
Linda @ A La Carte says
The garden is looking fabulous and so much ready to bloom! Love the pic of Scout watching you! Glad Don had a good day and got home safely. I’m stressing over some bad news for a family member and trying my best to handle it all. I need a good walk outside today.
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Oh, I’m so sorry, Linda. Take a walk and take care of yourself.
Wendy TC says
Love peonies. Photo when it has flowered please! Do you have a veggie garden, Claudia? Have fun listening to Don’s experiences.
Claudia says
No veggie garden. Too many deer and bunny rabbits around here. Plus we have so many farms around here that we can get fresh veggies easily.
Vera says
Wow – long day for Don. Glad he is back safely. Lovely pictures Claudia. Your yellow archangel looks interesting — that’s a new one to me…going to have to investigate. It’s Friday! Happy Weekend! First I have to get on a conference call…boo-hiss…..
Claudia says
Oh darn it! Have a great weekend, Vera.
Beverly says
Looking good, Claudia. I adore spirea!!!
Claudia says
Me too, Beverly. I have two spireas – one with pink blossoms and one with white.

Long day for Don…hope you’ll share a story or two…we love stories. Your garden is looking good…I’m sure that’s got to be a relief after the winter you had! Now to wait for the blooms! Most of my annuals are planted, but we still have a little of our garden renovation to finish. The work is never-ending. Enjoy your day…our weekend looks to be hot and humid…which I don’t care for! ;)
Claudia says
Yuck to humidity! Yes, I am relieved after this winter. And the rose bushes are slowly starting to produce some leaves. Another sigh of relief!
Donnamae says
So glad your roses are coming back too! I took mine out years ago…because the deer kept eating the blooms! We were the main course on the buffet for them for years. The deer only go along the sidewalk these days…so my hostas always suffer. Oh the joys of living with wildlife! ;)
Nancy in PA says
Everything is so lush and healthy! It’s an explosion of greens.
And Scout looks like a magical fairy tale creature, watching over you from the edge of the forest. ❤
Claudia says
She IS magical, Nancy!
Judy Clark says

I am, Judy. Thank you!
Nancy Blue Moon says
It is so good to see your big garden growing again Claudia..It makes me wish I had a little hillside spot to plant too..It just seems like such a nice area for a garden and plus you don’t have to mow it..I bet Miss Scout is happy she doesn’t have to walk through cold snow anymore..
Claudia says
She is much happier, Nancy. She likes this weather. Except for when it’s really hot.
monica says
Anxiously awaiting the blooming of the peonies! Congratulations on such a glorious garden.
Claudia says
Oh, I am too, Monica!
Tammy says
It’s just amazing to me how green everything is after a long winter. Just beautiful! Enjoy! Tammy
Claudia says
It seemed impossible such a short time ago!
Janet in Rochester says
Your garden is really looking great, Claudia. Glad you’re getting your peony buds too. After spending days working, raking, digging, mulching, planting, clipping, etc, it must be a terrific feeling to sit down out there, relax and look around at all your hard work. The terrace at my parents’ house, with its huge umbrella’ed table, was always our favorite place to gather, 3 seasons of the year. Especially after we kids had all moved out. We could all sit together, with our coffee or drinks, and yack and still enjoy the 9 acres of meadows that were Mom and Dad’s property. All kinds of birds and other critters during the day, fireflies on Summer nights. My Mom and one of my sisters were rabid golfers, so after a while it became known as “The 19th Hole.” We spent so much time out there my Dad eventually added a fireplace which was, as the saying goes, well-used… :>)
Claudia says
Nine acres of meadows! That sounds absolutely heavenly, Janet! What memories you must have.
Susie says
Claudia, That’s great news for Don. I love all the wonderful things budding and blooming at your place. Your patio looks so inviting. enjoy your weekend. We are to have rain on and off the next three days, with 80 degree temps. Then back tot he sixties on Tuesday. I do not like this hot weather so soon. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
Claudia says
We had some rain this morning Susie. We really need it, though, so I’m happy.
Vicki says
Wow, Claudia, you are quite the gardener! What a pretty spot there near the corral.
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Vicki!
Trudy Mintun says
Your gardens are so very wonderful. Once the ground covers are established do they cut down on or prevent weeds?
