“These are the days of our lives…”
For some reason the theme music for that soap went through my head this morning as I wondered what I would write about today. My days of late consist of babying my back. Or not babying it and paying the price.
What a giant bore!
As you know, I like to be active, even if ‘active’ consists of routine chores. I did do some chores yesterday, mostly because I was so sleep deprived. When I’m really, really tired I tend to do more chores as it keeps me from feeling sorry for myself and/or sighing constantly and bemoaning my lack of sleep. So I did do a few things and it helped me get through the day.
But I’m really sick of talking about it. So let’s move on.
Don is in the city today for an audition. I’m glad he has one, but the grass needs to be cut and I can’t do it. And we need groceries. These are first world problems, I realize. All in good time.
I will most likely finish Big Sky by Kate Atkinson today. It’s wonderful, just as I expected. I’m not sure what I’ll start next. Maybe a bit of non-fiction? Another first world problem: trying to figure out what to read from the piles of unread books sitting in my den.
So far so good, the rest of the sunflowers haven’t been chomped on – I checked this morning. We did have a visit from our lovely bunny, but he eats the grass and weeds. I’m most appreciative.
That’s about it, my friends. I realize this is rather mundane, but it’s real!
I just read that Toni Morrison died. What a profound loss. Rest in Peace.
Happy Tuesday.

Dear Claudia, I hope your back heals quickly. You are so energetic and to have to sit must be so hard for you! Wishing you a healing day and good vibes for Don’s audition! X Chy

Thank you, Chy!

That aquamarine McCoy pottery is so pretty! As a grouping, the color and textures are breathtaking!
Take care of that back—it takes time, as you know.
Claudia says
It sure does. And it’s frustrating!
Vicki says
There is nothing mundane about your sight-for-sore-eyes GORGEOUS aqua-green pottery, Claudia! Thanks for the photo.
I hope every day brings you closer to a better back so that you’re not in misery with it.
Sometimes I want to be really excited about life but realize I’m just plain bored. In which case a change of scenery is usually my solution. But I often feel like I’m marking the weeks from trash-day pickup to trash-day pickup, in which case it gets me to missing the interesting & adventurous times of younger life. ‘Tis the seasons, though; they change.
Claudia says
I have the same problem.

Can you take a nap during the day? I might take one today. I hardly had any sleep last night. I went to bed at 11:30 and I just could not fall asleep, even though I felt very tired. My brain wouldn’t shut off. I remember saying to Brian around 2-something in the morning, “I can’t sleep!” I kept tossing and turning, changing positions, hoping it would help and it didn’t. When he got up at 3:15 for work, I was still awake. I finally fell asleep after he left, but then was wide awake at 6:30!! What the heck?! So far, amazingly, I feel fine today. I even ran errands all morning. And I still need to get up to the farm stand, too.
My back has been on and off again lately. I was hoping that all the walking today (I walk outside every evening) during errands – especially all over a huge grocery store – would help my back and hip pain, but it didn’t. So I do my special PT exercises and take CBD gummies and Curcumin supplements and it helps a wee bit, but not much.
Here’s to healing – and sleep – for both of us!
Claudia says
I did take an hour long nap later in the day. Out like a light!
It’s so frustrating when you can’t sleep. I understand. xo

Hopefully your back will start to improve soon and be so debilitating for you. So pleased Nancy got in touch!
I’m a bit late to the party but I have finally started The Salt Path, I have walked along a small section in my teens as my aunt and uncle lived in Cornwall and I’ve visited many places en route.
To be fair, I haven’t read very far into the book but already I’m feeling a bit irked with some aspects. They visit the local council over their situation, only to be told they can’t help as Moth isn’t terminally ill enough to die within the next twelve months! No local government officer would ever be allowed to speak to someone in this manner and if they did then Ray and Moth could certainly complain and appeal. They would be offered temporary accommodation in a hostel, admittedly it probably wouldn’t be great but a letter from Moth’s doctor would certainly prioritise their place on the housing list.
In my line of work at the library, we have had people presenting as homeless and we put them in touch with the homeless team of fellow council workers. No local authority wants people to be sleeping on the streets.
Anyway, their journey and love for each other does look inspiring so I’ll reserve further judgment.
Happy Tuesday

NOT be so debilitating!

Well, all I can say is I loved the book. And everyone’s experiences with local authorities are different, right? xo

C’mon mundane, bring it! I’m 4 months into retirement from a very stressful job so mundane feels like heaven to me. I planted some radishes and beets in 2 vacant planters I had and am looking forward to something sprouting in the “dog days”. I don’t usually grow vegetables but was mildly successful with some standard tomatoes and lettuce so now I feel like an honest to goodness farmer. I just picked up Started Early, Took My Dog and the rest of my day will be spent looking up meatless recipes, baby steps, cleaning the fridge and counting my blessings. Here’s hoping your back gets better and you get a good nights sleep.
Claudia says
Glad you finally have a chance to enjoy the ‘mundane’ Deb! Have fun!

I have been reading until about 1AM every night/ morning and taking a Melatonin around midnight. That seems to help a BIT. Still waking up around 6 and out of bed by 7 or so. It seems like so many people I talk to have the same situation, so I am thinking it is an age thing that we all have in common. Usually in the afternoon around 2:30 ~ 3 I find myself nodding off for about 15-20 minutes. It’s not like that would be keeping me awake at night. I u have no caffeine intake at all, so I guess it is just a point in life where I don’t need as much sleep ???? Who knows.
Hope Don’s audition went well and you had a peaceful day.
Claudia says
My sleep patterns have changed a great deal in the past couple of years. Both of us tend to wake up quite early now, so if we have trouble getting to sleep, we end up getting less sleep than we’d like. I remember my Mom saying the same thing. Sigh!
Marilyn says
Hope Don gets the role. Sorry your back is still bothering you. Pest in peace Toni Morrison.

Claudia says
Yes, indeed. She was a brilliant writer. Thanks, Marilyn!

I do love your collection of McCoy pottery! I am ready to change out my shelves and bring out some pottery…it must be almost Fall. Laughing at myself. The rest has been good for me. Feeling a little better but still have the nasty cough. Hoping to get that chest xray this week.
Claudia says
So glad you’re feeling a bit better, Linda. Take care of yourself.
kathy in iowa says
so sorry you still have back troubles.
hope you feel better soon!
best wishes to don. hope he gets offered the role!
it’s hot here and after some long, hard days at work, i don’t feel like doing any chores or cooking a thing … so that’s what i’m doing tonight … nothing that i don’t want to do! :)
hope you have a nice night and feel and sleep better.

A grouping of turquoise McCoy pottery is hardly mundane in my book. Hope Don’s audition went well.
Rest up, and enjoy your gardens and the wildlife!

I will. Thanks, Donnamae!

Hi Claudia,
Love the McCoy pottery collection, especially seeing it displayed and loved as you have. You have great style.
I am dealing with a hip issue. It happened as I was getting a gallon of milk out of the back of my vehicle. Really!!! Wouldn’t it be much better if I had a good story to explain it , like lifting a wooden box with a tree planted in it or a bushel of potatoes or even something more creative that I have never done. I am also having a severe reaction to insects. They seem to lick the Deep Woods Off aside and bite me anyway. Chemo has changed my blood drasticly and made me a mosquito/insect magnet so I can’t spend near as much time outside as I really need to, so I get the “mundane”. Let’s choose more ways to appreciate it as it is so much better than it could other wise be.
Kelly
Claudia says
I’m so sorry to hear of your hip problems. My back problem is almost a hip problem – it’s very low in the back and seems to generate pain elsewhere.
Yes, you’re right. Mundane isn’t at all bad. Thank you, Kelly.
Leslie says
I’m with Vicki and Donnamae, all that McCoy transcends the mundane. Time-traveling beauty. Have you been icing your back? I got a very effective clay ice pack at CVS. You put it in the freezer, and it conforms to your body’s shape. It stays cold for about an hour, though you are not supposed to keep t on that long. It feels good and I think it helps the swollen parts between the vertebrae. I hope you find some relief soon.
Claudia says
I do ice it, but not consistently. Thanks, Leslie.
Nora in CT says
I know your budget is limited, but have you ever tried acupuncture or acupressure? It can really help speed healing. Usually you need a few sessions tho. But when I get pain that sticks around for a long time and nothing else has worked, it’s been a big benefit. It’s exhausting to hurt at every move. :-(. I was sad to hear of the death of Toni Morrison. I read a lot of her books and to be honest there was a lot about them that I never really understood but I loved the Song of Solomon. If you haven’t read it, I’d recommend it. Last reading for me was decades ago, but it’s my favorite of her works. I think I’m missing school–I keep thinking of courses I would love to take, to wit: Black American writers. Start with Frederick Douglass, hit Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, Olivia Butler, Alice Walker, Morrison, and the young woman who wrote The Hate You Give, which was a pretty damn good book. Context of the African American experience at the time of the writing and of literature and how they used and transformed tropes and metaphors and narrative. Too bad I don’t have a literature degree! LOL. Happy Mundane Wed. XO
Claudia says
My favorite was Beloved. I just loved that book. She was extraordinary. Thanks, Nora!
