The Porch & Neccos

May 24, 2018 at 9:21 am by Claudia

Call me crazy, but I decided to put actual Necco candies in the vintage Necco jar.

A while back when I was at Tractor Supply, I noticed a bunch of them at the checkout. I scooped them up and here they are.

Don wants me to get more.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I used to pass by their manufacturing facility in Cambridge, MA when I lived there. You could smell the Neccos. Mmmm. Such a great memory.

Taken this morning. It’s a gorgeous sunny day here. I can hear the sound of a lawnmower in the background, birds chirping and the occasional basso counterpoint from the bullfrog.

I have more mowing to do today. I mowed the back forty yesterday, as well as the corral.

The dove seems to be settling in nicely. I saw another one at Milne Antiques and Design the other day. It had lost its paint. But, doves come in pairs, don’t they? They mate for life. Maybe I need to get the other dove.

Just pondering.

The porch is my happy place.

I stepped out there this morning to take some pictures and I immediately felt lighter and happier. I’m so grateful for it. The cottage may be small, but the porch gives us an extra outdoor room, which more than makes up for it. I’m a porch person.

Happy Thursday.

Yes to Neccos and a companion dove! Your porch is such an inviting place. Thank heaven for a nice sunny day to complete the picture. It’s sunny around here, too, but we are mired in mud and cement work. Making a big mess so we can enjoy the yard later in the season—fingers crossed.

Well, it started with a base for Mr. Wizard’s hot tub (not a fan!), but has expanded to the other side of the house, where some 120-year-old stairs have slumped down the steep hill this place sits on, becoming so uneven and perilous that the ‘old people’ who live here are having trouble getting around!

I’ve never been into hot tubs. Not only do I have no desire to sit in one, I think they’re boxy and not at all attractive! But I know a lot of people love their hot tubs!

Good thing you scooped them up. Necco was slated for bankruptcy. They were bought yesterday by Spangler….maker of Dum Dum’s. Necco also makes the conversation hearts. Future of Skybar unclear. End of an era.

I’m a porch person, too, which is why I am grateful for the two balconies I have here in Kuwait that are both filled with plants. Granted, it is often hard to keep them clean, but I’d much rather have outdoor space than not. My BIL took us to a place in Canada called Big Apple where everything they make and bake is with apples. They also had a candy store with all the old candies. Neccos used to be one of my favorite. Your dove definitely needs a mate.

You have a wonderful porch. Simple, warm…inviting…all the good stuff. Our deck is our front porch. We live there in the spring, summer, and most of fall. Weather permitting….it isn’t covered like your porch. And…it doesn’t have that drool-worthy bluestone, either.

You really need the other dove…you know you do. Just go get it. You’ll feel so much better! ;)

That is, when I’m not doing minis. I love your jar, complete with candy. I am going to look for Necco wafers the next time I am out and about! Thanks for reminding me of my favorite candy as a kid!

I miss the little front porch at my former home, with its wooden swing and morning sun, just right for a cup of coffee and the morning paper, especially on Sunday. And I miss the little deck off my bedroom, partially shaded by my plum tree. My cat would often accompany out there, me reading on a chair and she sleeping under it. I have a beautiful back yard but nothing, to me, compares to a comfy porch. Your porch is so comfy and inviting, Claudia. No wonder it’s your happy place!

I pretty much resigned myself to my present house. My husband said after 8 years in an old house, he didn’t want to work so much maintaining our next house, especially with a baby on the way. So, we got a new house in a planned community. I was sad to leave my old house. What sold me on the new one is two things: that I only have one neighbor next to me, and I have a big back yard (relatively speaking). I have friends who live in this community with five neighbors (one on either side, one directly behind, and one on either side of the one directly behind…all can see into everyone else’s back yard from the second floor windows), and postage stamp size yards. It’s the luck of the draw on how the lots were divided and who ends up with what. We were “lucky”. You were certainly lucky to find your cottage.

Well, I’m a porch person from a long line of Porch People, so I can definitely tell you – you have a darn fine porch there. I know if I had a spot like that, I’d pretty much spend my day out there. Even rainy days. As long as the rain is coming straight down at least. When I was little, our house had a wide porch on 3 sides that my parents eventually “glassed in” once they had 6 little goobers to wrangle. And my stay-at-home mother had a rule that we played OUTSIDE whenever possible. Which meant, in general, EXCEPT in the case of lightning or sub-zero temps. And there’s nothing like a porch – especially in May. I mean, is there a finer month in the year? It’s probably the one month when you can pretty much bank of not needing either a jacket or AC. So enjoy that porch – and the Neccos! If you don’t like the chocolate ones, I’d be glad to take them off your hands – haha! Peace.

Porch people are the best people! Fun to enjoy these months when we can out there. We are in the mid 80’s this aft and supposed to be close to 90* for the weekend. And high humidity. Way too early. But the grass is green, the flowers are lovely, and there are no piles of white crud anywhere, so we will enjoy this even if we have to step inside for the benefit of AC for a while.

We went to Home Depot today and they have the 2 for $10 hanging baskets this weekend. I came home with 12 of them. I take the hangars off some of them and use them in other ways around the yard, too. So many pretty flowers.

Sounds like you have, as always, been busy. Breaking mowing down into a 2 day process sounds like a most excellent plan. And then having that serene porch to sit upon with a cup or glass of something is the reward!! Yay!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
