Gosh, Don and I are homebodies. We find that the older we get, the more we love hanging around our cottage. We don’t need a lot of outside stimulation, though we get plenty of that when we’re working away from home. Maybe that’s what makes life here all the more precious, our work in theater, television and film always involves lots of people so it is, by nature, very social. There’s also a lot of visual and sensory stimulation. It’s wonderful, but returning to the cottage and our quiet life here always calms us and grounds us.
Yesterday, we went to a friend’s restaurant for brunch and to listen to some music. Afterward, we checked out a few antique shops – sort of disappointing, except for one incredible antique lighting and vintage bathroom fittings shop – and checked out a great used bookstore. For more about that, read today’s post on Just Let Me Finish This Page.
While it was fun, about two hours into it all we could say was that we couldn’t wait to get home.
Crazy. I like seeing new places and all of that, but I love being in my little cottage. Actually, I’ve always been that way. I’m a nester and after I’ve created my nest, wherever that is, I like nothing more than hanging out there. The big surprise is that Don, the guy who was on the road for years and had very few possessions when I met him, now feels the same way. We love our life here at the cottage.
But, all of that is balanced by a strong yearning to travel. We both have that urge. We’d love to have an RV and travel all around the country. We want to go to Europe together (we’ve both been there separately.) And we will do that someday, that’s for sure.
We are fortunate that our work takes us to different cities, even countries, and that when we’re working, we make lots of new friends and connections. All of that enables us to really appreciate our time here at home. We sure don’t take it for granted.
The obligatory flower photo of the day:
Happy Monday.

Wonderful post. We are the same. Home is our sanctuary from the craziness of our lives, a craziness we love but something we need to leave behind for calm and clarity. I’m so anxious to move to the country as I know we’ll be able to spend much more time “home” because of the drive. And we’ve designed our new house to accommodate this nicely.
Enjoy your day! Enjoy home!
Claudia says
Your new home sounds wonderful, Chy.

I think some of us are just born homebodies. I have always been, as I am shy naturally. Of course, if I get to know you well, look out, because I will talk your ear off! Even when I lived in military situations, I really didn’t talk much. Maybe that is why I am more comfortable talking to people on the computer; no face-to-face. Laura, who is almost 15, is not shy, but she does separate school from home. If she talks to you at school, she probably does not talk to you when she is at home. She says the drama needs to stay at school!
The pancakes Don made for you look good! Laura wants us to make them. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Love that photo of Don!
Hope you are feeling better. Have a peaceful day.
Hugs,
Deb

I am slowly feeling better. Awfully tired, but I think that’s due to a combination of allergies and the antibiotics.

Hi Claudia, your entry hit the nail on the head. I am in the homebody category. The idea of rigging an RV as a traveling nest is intriguing. Good idea.
Thanks for the full blown Mornong Glory. Beautiful photo!
Claudia says
Would love a traveling nest, Casey!

We feel the same way Claudia. We did buy a small trailer this year and love it…we hope to travel the country…and then come home (and our very small house feels rather large after living in a small trailer for a week or two!!). Love the morning glory shot — no other blue like it. I used to make vegan pancakes when our son was vegan – the recipe I have calls for a mix of white, whole wheat flour, corn meal and oats. Very yummy. The ones Don made for you look perfect. How sweet!
Claudia says
Oh good for you! I’m a wee bit jealous. We hope to do that someday soon!

i went “HOME” a couple of weeks ago for my dad’s 85th birthday, and was gone for a week….i had not been back to ashtabula for a year, and was so excited to get back to my “roots” of 46 years….well…after 3 days..i missed my “other” home …we have been gone from ‘bula for 16 years now, since a strike took us away….i found myself “pining” and was glad to come back…i guess after 16 years…this is now “home”…so i can understand how you felt claudia…so happy that you and don are “homebodies” too!!!
Claudia says
I guess home is indeed where the heart is, Sharon.
Francine says
Hi Claudia!! Same here for us, we love to come back to our house after being out… We were just away for a week and couldn’t wait to get back home even though we were having a great time… I was even nostalgic about doing my grocery shopping – I couldn’t wait to get home… Its so nice we have this refuge and makes me feel very grateful!! Wonderful post!! Francine
Claudia says
We are also very grateful, Francine!

Like you and Don I love to get away. The preparation while not as intense as yours is ads to the excitement of going. I really only go to two different places. I go to Minneapolis where my son loves and also my BF. I go to my aunt’s house which is about 3 hours away.
I love being with these people, and we have a grand time. But after a few days I want to be back to my home and my husband.
I would love to travel, but unfortunately that will probably never happen. I wouldn’t go alone, and my husband is agoraphobic. Travel for him is impossible, heck so is going outside.
I love the Morning Glory. I can grow the vines here, just not the flower part.
Claudia says
I’m so sorry about your husband’s agoraphobia, Trudy. That must be very hard for both of you.

It truly can be said, no matter how far or wide you roam, there is no place like home :-) I have to agree with the others, those blueberry pancakes do look especially yummy! And they always taste better when someone else makes them. How lucky you are to have a mate who enjoys the kitchen. Mine makes a killer grilled cheese sandwich, delicious chocolate chip cookies, and the best fried egg, otherwise the kitchen intimidates him. But, I am thankful for my grilled cheese, fried eggs and chocolate chip cookies-heehee
Claudia says
I’m like your husband. I make great french toast, scrambled eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches!
Linda says
Oh the beauty in that morning glory! The sun and a smile radiating out from the center, just wonderful.
Claudia says
It’s sure pretty, Linda!

Love the obligatory flower shot…almost looks like there’s a light shining in the middle of it…intriguing! I love to take road trips…to see new sights, to see how other people live, to eat new foods. But, there is no place like home! ;)
Claudia says
You’re so right, Donnamae.
Linda @ A La Carte says
With all the time I’ve had to spend away from home in the last few years, I’ve come to really enjoy my quiet time in my own place so much. It’s a joy to just be home among my own things and relax. I do love to travel and will continue too I’m sure, but as they say there’s no place like home!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
You’ve been away an awful lot, Linda. I bet being back home is truly wonderful.
Janet in Rochester says
Oh, I think that’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be, if we’re lucky. We are MEANT to love being in our homes, our nests. It’s hard-wired into our DNA. When cave people weren’t looking for food, they were trying to find secure places to hide from the dangers of their day. I enjoy being away from home, out and about in the world for different purposes. To socialize, visit family and friends. To travel. To shop and do errands [well, some errands]. To see movies, music, plays, art. But it never fails. The minute I walk back into my house I feel like I plunge about 50 degrees on the “Stressed” meter. I actually feel soothed and comforted. PS – love the “obligatory” flower photo. This reader will happily take them as often as possible [remember – winter’s coming].
Claudia says
Yes, I can feel my shoulders drop when I get back home, Janet!
Nancy Blue Moon says
Funny..I have been noticing the same in myself lately..the older I get the more I like being home..I still like going to antique shops and being among the past..and flea markets I don’t think I will ever tire of them..but after I am out for a while I start to think..OK..I just want to go home now..I did plenty of running around in my younger years..now I just feel good sitting in a comfy chair and reading or stitching or just relaxing with a cat snuggled on my lap..I guess Dorothy was right..”There’s No Place Like Home.”
Claudia says
She was absolutely right, Nancy!

Claudia, I am such a nester that I think it aggravates my husband. When we go away for a few days I just want to go home. A few years ago we drove to The Grand Canyon and Yellowstone and were gone for two weeks. I found myself actually thinking about how cool our kitchen floor felt to my bare feet. When I mentioned it to Carl he laughed at me. The photo of the Morning Glory is beautiful!
Leslie Anne @ Fairhope Supply Co. says
Home is always a great place to be!
Hope the Lyme disease is getting better.

We are homebodies too Claudia. But I agree that it is nice on occasion to get away and see something different! An RV would be wonderful for y’all. Even a small one. It wouldn’t be the same as a hotel. It would be like a little home away from home. You could park it and then visit the sites around that town. Even Scoutie could go!
We finally got the bug to finish our old trailer we bought before The Honey’s heart attack. He thinks we might be camping in it by Spring! I’m excited about it again!
I want to get to the making it cute part of camping. :)

I think that coming home, whether from a day’s work or a world tour, is one of the best things there is. I’m in rehab after my knee replacement and can’t wait to get home and have “all my things about me” (Maureen O’Hara in “The Quiet Man”, one of my favorite movies.
Missy says
It seems asthough you have the best of both worlds. Happy for you. I, too, am a Nester.
