Wildflowers are blooming everywhere on the property:
Yes, I know this is Purple Loosestrife and that it can be invasive. It isn’t invasive on our property.Β It only grows near the culvert, where water is often flowing on rainy days, and in one other area where there is poor drainage.
And it’s pretty.
This morning, I looked outside the living room window and saw a mother and young fawn walking slowly across the front lawn. I ran for the camera, but was only able to catch the fawn when she was momentarily standing still on the driveway.
It’s aΒ little blurry, but you can see that she’s a beauty. Then I spent an anxious couple of minutes watching the two of them start to cross the road, then stop and linger in the middle of the road, until they moved on safely to the other side. Thank goodness it was around 6 am and there was very little traffic on the road.
Sigh of relief.
I mowed that lawn yesterday in high temps and high humidity. It took me the rest of the day to recover!
Happy Sunday.

I have the same things blooming right now. I love the smell of the wild bee balm. We had twins born in our yard this year and had to keep the dog away from them all day until they decided to stand and wander off into the woods. You are better than me, I’m waiting till during the week to mow, the temps are supposed to drop again.
Claudia says
I’m not going out there again, that’s for sure!
Vicki says
Well, you seem quite rural, to have deer come up into the yard; here, in SoCal, I can understand it because they’re desperate for water in the severe drought, so they come out of the hills at dusk or early morning, poor things; displaced. Your camera captured them beautifully. Just like the perfect wildflowers. When you do the close-ups of the single blooms, it’s really easy to appreciate their individual loveliness. Enjoy your Sunday. Rest up. We are in an ‘excessive heat warning’ all weekend, per the National Weather Service; it was 107 degrees in Van Nuys yesterday; where I am, we’ll hit 100 degrees today. I wilt. We are just scorched.
Claudia says
Stay cool, Vicki!

Uh oh, the title of your post has me now singing Lou Reed and apparently not everyone in our household is a fan.
The fawn is lovely! I always like to see who’s up before the work day begins. We have a family of ‘urban’ crows’ that live in the pine trees beside us and this summer has been dedicated to ‘flying lessons’ which has been fascinating to watch. They can be awfully loud though – early this morning it sounded as though they were returning home from a boisterous night on the town.
Claudia says
We have some crows that hang out here occasionally and you’re right – they can be so loud!

We have 8 or so petit sunflowers pop up in the unweeded section of our garden. It was an experiment. There was so much growing back there…that I couldn’t distinguish between weeds, wild flowers, or other, with out a picture book in front of me! So…I let it all grow…and it looks really beautiful! I’m sure the birds planted quite a few of those. It’s been brutal here since Friday…that was when we spread mulch…but now it’s done! Took me all of yesterday to recover, too. Enjoy your day…rain predicted for tomorrow…we can always hope! ;)
Claudia says
Brutal here, as well! I love this time of year – not because of the humidity – but because of all the wildflowers that spring up.
Dottie in Missouri says
Lovely sights as always! We saw a red fox run across our field one evening last week! Hot here too. Summer mowing is such a chore! How do you trim the gulley by the road? We can mow part and have to weed trim the rest. Just more work for Hubby! But looks so pretty when done. Wish the local teens(?) would stop beating our mail box over!!
Claudia says
I trim a bit of it, but the town has a guy with a tractor come by about twice a season and he cuts it from the road. Our mail box is on its last legs, Dottie. We need to get a new one.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Such pretty wild flowers. We have deer here all the time and they are so sweet! I’m going to do some house cleaning today and then an afternoon visit with my Mom. Enjoy your day!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Have a wonderful time with your Mom, Linda.

No deer in my immediate area, though they do live up in the hills a few miles east of where I am, and my friend south of me has deer in her woodsy neighborhood. So when I do spot one in the hills, I get excited. There are lots of the usual urban wild animals, possums, raccoons, skunks. We used to have jackrabbits, but development destroyed their habitat and they couldn’t adapt like the others could. I suspect the raccoons live in the sewer. I hold my breath for the cats that like to roam my neighborhood. Since I live in a cul de sac, there is little traffic, but the cats sometimes are grooming themselves in the middle of the street! When I see that, I do go up to them and tell them to get moving….not all drivers look out for cats, stray balls and the children who run after them as I do….
Hope your Sunday is more fun than mowing that expanse of grass that you have. I’m assuming you have a push mower?
Claudia says
I’m the same way. I once stopped my car on the side of the road and then proceeded to stop and direct the traffic so a family of baby Canada Geese could cross the road.
We have a gasoline push mower.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Queen Anne’s Lace….. is there anything more beautiful?? And it is labeled a weed….. I just can’t agree with that.
So hot here. The humidity is simply gross. But with daily watering the flowers remain beautiful, and for that I am happy!
Claudia says
Really, really humid here, too! I hate it.
I love Queen Anne’s Lace!
Judy Clark says
Beautiful wild flowers! Love the photo of the baby deer.

Claudia says
What a little beauty that deer is!
Nancy Blue Moon says
What a beautiful start to your morning Claudia…I would have been terribly nervous watching them cross the road too…Wildflowers..a sweet gift from Mother Nature..I have white goose-neck loose strife I am trying to get rid of in the back garden..I didn’t know it would try to take over the whole garden when I planted it…I really like it so I am going to keep a big planter full of it so it can’t spread….
Claudia says
Good idea, Nancy! Then you’ll have the loosestrife but not the problems!
Patricia says
We have NO flowers at the moment Claudia. Your flowers are beautiful. I hear it said that Wisteria can be invasive. But I love it and have it in my yard… I prune it back with a vicious hand-especially the one nearest the oak tree.
We never see any deer here. They’re so beautiful.
We are expecting some rain later in the week.. We aren’t as dry as we have been in the most recent years… So grass is growing slowly. Right now it needs mowing… We’ll get it done… It’s not going anywhere!
You stay cool- don’t over do it out there.
Claudia says
Oh, I love Wisteria too, Pat. We had some growing near our rental when we first moved out here. I’d let it be invasive!
An Enchanted Cottage says
What a beautiful photo! I wish we lived in an area with more wildlife, but I am very grateful for what we do have! Have a good week, Claudia.
Donna
Claudia says
You too, Donna. I know you have plenty of wonderful animals and birds to observe in your garden.
Diane says
OH what a cute fawn! She looks so tiny. Don’t you just love their white spotted coats? Not many flowers blooming in our area, oh… one here and there, but August flowers are simply elusive it seems. I’ll just enjoy looking at yours. xo
Claudia says
I do. I love fawns. I hadn’t seen one in a long time, and there she was with her sweet white spots! A lovely early morning blessing.
Grace says
The heat sure can soak up any energy so it is easy to imagine how mowing the lawn would be more than enough to do…
The fawn picture is such a sweet image!!! Wonderful visitors to see! I’m so glad you were able to photograph a sense of the moment. Thanks for sharing!
