Greetings from the wind tunnel.
I’m not kidding. It sounds like I’m in a wind tunnel, especially upstairs in the office. The winds kicked up yesterday afternoon and they raged all night long. At this point, I’m ready to scream. In fact, I did scream some invective last night. Luckily, both Don and I are well versed in the dramatic turn, so he just laughed at me. (I did it twice.)
I grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, home of the Ford Motor Company. Not only was it the home of the World Headquarters, there was also the Rouge Plant (every school kid went on a tour of the Rouge Plant) and mysterious things like the Testing Ground and the….Wind Tunnel.
I was fascinated by the Wind Tunnel. What must it have been like inside the tunnel?
I think I know now.
Welcome to life in and around my cottage in what seems to be the windiest part of my neck of the woods. Again, not kidding. The other day, during a horrendously windy day, I got in the car to run some errands. Once I left my road and ventured onto neighboring roads, it struck me that the trees weren’t moving. Nor were the bushes. But back home? Crazy movement everywhere. I’ve observed this same thing many times. Windy here, but not there.
It’s in the single digits right now. Lovely.
I saw robins for the first time yesterday. They looked stunned by all the snow on the ground. Oh, we’re getting over a foot of snow on Tuesday.
I found myself whiling away some time on eBay yesterday afternoon. Roseville has been very pricey for the past 6 months or so. Ever hopeful, I did a search. Still too pricey. I miss adding to my collection, but truth be told, because I have amassed quite a bit of Roseville, I’m pickier now. Same thing with McCoy. I have a lot of McCoy and there are really only a few pieces I would bid on at this point.
But I love collecting. What’s a girl to do?
Never fear, I found a vintage Nancy Drew and it’s on the way to the cottage. The newest will be The Mystery at Lilac Inn. I can’t wait to show you the cover illustration!
We’re hunkered down here at the cottage because it’s so gosh-darned cold out there! Reading, cuddling (it’s our last weekend together for quite a while), maybe some quilting, and some cleaning, straightening, plant watering…that kind of thing.
Happy Saturday.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Wind like that can drive you crazy! Love that Don laughed at you, yes I have a bit of the dramatic streak in me also! I too haven’t bought anything Roseville in a long time. My shelves are pretty full and the prices have gone sky high. I did find that sweet yellow McCoy planter a few weeks ago for $5 and that made me happy. I’m going to work a bit in the craft room today. I need a cupboard in there at some point to display more of my pottery. I’ll have to start looking for just the right piece! Enjoy your weekend with Don.
hugs!!
Claudia says
Have fun in the craft room, Linda. Sounds like the perfect thing to do!

I’m sorry…I laughed out loud when I read a foot of snow on Tuesday! Really? Mother Nature can be cruel, can’t she!? The local boy scout troop is having a food drive….they wanted the food on the front porch by 9 a.m. I hesitated putting it out, because it was so cold this morning…like 9 degrees! Sure hope they will be by soon…before the food freezes. I was so hopeful a couple of weeks ago when the temps were in the 60’s and 70’s….guess I really got used to those temps, and I’m having a hard time adjusting back. Hope you enjoy your weekend with Don! ;)
Claudia says
It makes me crazy – a foot of snow?? We’re apparently getting a nor’easter.
I am also having a hard time with this frigid, windy weather. It should be spring-like now!
Dianne says
Love that Nancy Drew title: The Mystery at Lilac Inn! Life’s so called simple pleasures are incredibly important to our quality of life and hate to think of life without them. I know it is easy for collections to get out of hand but even then, we learn something from them. To collect something that has meaning for you really does have a place in our life experience. Enjoy those lovely McCoy and Roseville pieces. Love it when you share those wonderful pottery works of art. Wind really can give you the screaming meemies!….. Hope you can stay warm . Dianne
Claudia says
I love collecting pottery and yesterday was a day when I looked at my collections with fresh eyes. I appreciate every piece.

We had the wind storm on Wednesday and we are on Day 4 without power like so many here in Metro Detroit. We were able to go to somewhere with power, but it’s been a cold few nights for most. I’ve never seen anything like it here!
Claudia says
Oh no! I’m so sorry you are without power, Vicki! My nephew is also without power and is trying to get by with no power and two toddlers!
Kellianne says
Speaking of Ford…their iconic oval sign actually blew off the HQ building!
The power company mentioned this being the worst wind storm in history, leaving a million people without power in MI.
Brrrr, stay warm and cozy! I’m baking cookies today.
Claudia says
Whoa! Those winds in Michigan were somehow off my radar – I had no idea how bad they were. Stay warm yourself, Kellianne!
Shanna says
That Nancy Drew title suggests an awesome cover illustration, doesn’t it? I can see it now! Sorry about that wind. Ours finally went away so we got some shack painting done. But we aren’t finished, so I hope the wind has gone somewhere else for next week (and not to you!). Enjoy your weekend with Don!
Claudia says
It’s a very 30ish illustration, Shanna. One of the earlier illustrations by Russell H. Tandy.
Trina says
I can’t believe that there is possibility of snow tomorrow!!Especially when we just had 70-plus degrees earlier this week. The wind is enough to drive anyone crazy. We lived in El Paso and it can get windy there. The house that we lived in while there, I could see the walls move. And the dirt came in through cracks that seemed to appear just in time for the wind. I disliked the windy season there. And the windy season lasted about 3 months or more. I am looking forward to seeing the cover of your new Nancy Drew book.
Claudia says
Wind is just no fun – if it’s an occasional thing, yes – but if it’s relentless? No.
Wendy T says
I don’t like howling wind either. Luckily, that is a very very rare occurrence here…we get some wind sometimes, but not howling. Enjoy your new to you Nancy Drew.
Claudia says
It isn’t here yet, it will be delivered sometime next week.
Vicki says
The Mystery at Lilac Inn; I remember reading it when I was a young girl. How fun! I didn’t read every Nancy Drew, but I read a lot of them.
Quite a weather phenomenon you’re having; perfect weather for indeed hunkering down with your beloved. I know you two are making it count.
Claudia says
It’s insane out here, Vicki. We’re trying to hang in there but I’m not a happy camper.
Vicki says
Maybe April will get back to normal! I keep thinking of that song I love from “Carousel” (June is Bust’in Out All Over) about March wind blowing out like a lion, whipping up the waters in the bay…
…and thinking of that just made me yearn to listen to some good soundtrack musicals today; I have my own and some of Mom’s terrific LPs, like Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Camelot, My Fair Lady, The King & I , South Pacific; so I think that’s gonna be part of my plan to stay inside, in order to escape our searing heat outside here in SoCalif…
I wish you could give me some of your cold; I’d give you some of our heat…and then we’d BOTH be happy campers!!
So now I’m thinking about my mother since the above came to mind. Nice memories. How lucky I was that she exposed us to musical theater in our young lives. Her old 33 rpms; the sheet music on the piano (I still, of course, have all of it); always singing around the house while happily doing her chores. She was such a wonderful singer; could have had a stellar career except for circumstances of WWII, the band breaking up with the guys having to join the fight…marriage/family being her focus after the opportunities dried up, although she never complained and instead made music part of her life, forever, in whatever way she could. Even after her stroke, just a couple of years before she passed, nearing age 90, she could sing when she couldn’t yet speak. It was miraculous. I thought it was brilliant of the caregiver to try putting a record on the turntable. She did it to create a calm, familiar environment for Mom after the hospital stay, never realizing it would prompt Mother to form words so soon. Music is such a healer.
Claudia says
My mom and dad had a lot of original cast albums and I grew up hearing them. Probably contributed to my starting out my acting career in musical theater. My own collection of Broadway cast albums surely was in the hundreds.
I love hearing that music was such a powerful influence on your mother and that it gave her peace. Beautiful.
Kathy says
The wind has been very bad here as well. It makes me so restless. I don’t like it. It’s so cold, I haven’t been out of the house since Thursday. Thank goodness for a stack of new books!
Claudia says
We’re getting cabin fever, Kathy!
Judy Clark says
Sorry about all of that wind. When we have high winds, this new home has some funny sounds that hopefully, I will get used to. LOL We are having several days of slow, consistent rain which we sorely need. There have been so many wildfires around here and so much property lost. Mostly farm land. So sad. But, the rain should help.
Have a great weekend all snuggled in your cozy home.
Judy
Claudia says
Wildfires are so terrible, with so much loss. I’m glad you’re getting some much-needed rain, Judy.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
“Oh, the wayward wind….. is a restless wind” ~ I think that is a song. It was crazy here this past week as well. Garbage cans all over the place, along with all the bits and bobs of garbage that accumulates in those huge snow piles at the end of the streets. They have been melted for several weeks, but that stuff remains and kicks up with that wind. I think we are to get 5-7 inches of snow on Monday. ugh.
Enjoy your weekend. Glad Don doesn’t have to leave til next weekend, and hopefully all of this weather nonsense will be a memory. If you have coffee and books, and some good food to cook, it can make it a cozy weekend. And then the storm arrives. So over it!!
Claudia says
Sung by the great Gogi Grant. It is a song and one of my favorites from that era.
Since we’re getting over a foot of snow on top of what we already have, I wonder how long it will take to melt away?
Marilyn says
Glad that you found another”Nancy Drew” for your collection. My older sister has “The Lilac Inn” among her collection. i read it quite a while ago. Enjoy. Sorry about the foot of snow,I am dreading it. I will be shoveling a long time Tuesday or Wednesday.
Marilyn
Claudia says
Be careful when you’re shoveling, Marilyn! We’ll be snow blowing, but also shoveling. Yuck, right?
Vera says
Like you, we seem to live in a wind tunnel. We have commented on it for years. Very cold, windy and snow on the ground. Our forecast is for snow Monday night into Tuesday night and possibly Wednesday. I will cook, read, knit. Really enjoying “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles.
Claudia says
All good things to do, Vera. This is when I wish we had a fireplace! Somehow it would make it more bearable.
Diane says
We had quite a few windy days and nights too! BUT, no snow. Snowless winter in fact, how crazy is that!
Claudia says
Crazy. We had one of those last year – not entirely snowless, but Don never used the snowblower. This year is another story!
