A clearing in our woods that Don named Maple Grove. You can see our neighbor’s field in the distance.
June 1st. My parents’ wedding anniversary. Let’s see, they would be married 77 years today. Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad.
We are due for a high of 90 degrees today and 91 tomorrow. Then it will drop back into the 70s. So, do we try to install our air conditioners today? My back is a little tetchy…it was a lot better but something set it off the other day. But today, it seems stronger. Anyway, Don is sore as well. So, do we just try to hang in there for today and tomorrow and wait until next week to install them?
You don’t have to answer.
It is a beautiful morning. Still no sign of rain, though we might get thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. I have learned not to count on these ‘chance of rain or thunderstorms’ forecasts. Invariably, the rain passes us by.
The clematis is blooming. Actually, it’s blooming a lot more than this; I took this a few days ago. I will get an update photo later today. I love this gorgeous color.
Both Elly Griffiths books are now in my possession. I started reading The Locked Room yesterday.
And finally, a wee frock arrived in yesterday’s mail.
It’s what the creator calls a ‘handkerchief dress’ because it’s made from a vintage handkerchief. This is so deliciously retro looking that I couldn’t resist. Madeleine wears it with elegance, as usual.
Stay safe.
Happy Thursday.
Petra says
I LOVE that dress!
Claudia says
Thank you, Petra.

that maple grove looks like a wonderful place to sit and relax!
and madeleine’s new dress is beautiful. clever idea to use a handkerchief for blythe- dresses. gives an idea of scale, too.
hope you and don feel better soon and also get some rain. good luck with the air conditioners (whenever you install them) and the heat. we have a similar forecast (ugh).
happy first day of june! stay safe.
kathy
Claudia says
Thank you, Kathy.
Stay safe.
Donnamae says
Sorry to hear about your backs.…perhaps you might find respite from the heat in the Maple Grove? We have almost the same forecast….it’s way too early for 90’s. Rain not likely here either.
Happy reading…and stay cool!! ;)
Claudia says
Way too early!
Stay safe, Donnamae.
Kay in SE WI says
‘Maple Grove,” Mr. Elton’s sister-in-law’s home in Emma :-) Sorry, but I frequently insert Jane Austen into real life.
There’s been some heavy isolated showers in this area but nothing by us. About to go out and water everything in pots and/or newly planted since nothing is coming for days. In a way I’m kind of glad about the rain because, with Dean in Asia, then Toronto, then DC and not returning until June 16, there’s less chance I’ll have to mow.
Take care,
K.
Claudia says
I’m very afraid of drought this summer, since we had to deal with one last summer.
Stay safe, Kay.
Janet+K. says
I love the word frock. It reminds me of my British heritage.😊
Claudia says
Thanks, Janet.
Stay safe.
Tana says
Oh! I love the dress. I have a book for making dresses for Barbie dolls out of handkerchiefs. It is lovely, but luckily, I have no Barbie dolls! Have never used the book. I have mostly picture books by my bed that I call my “Bedtime Story Books”. They help me to de-stress so I can sleep. Lots of kids books next to my bed. HaHaHa!
kathy in iowa says
hej, tana.
i have many children’s books at home and appreciate hearing that you do, too. glad if they help you relax. :)
some that i have are much-loved books from my childhood (including “the bunny sitter”, “gwendolyn the market hen”, “gus was a friendly ghost” and “mr. pine’s purple house”, among other picture books; “born free”, “misty of chincoteague”, “brighty of the grand canyon”, etc. for longer stories). others are classics or more recent ones (“where butterflies fill the skies”, “sam and dave dig a hole”, etc. … lots of etc.!). beatrice alemagna, isabelle arsenault are new-to-me authors/illustrators that i like, too, but all the books i have include words and/or illustrations i find inspiring. good messages. also, i am slowly working on several children’s books and i love art and these books are inspiring.
do you have any favorites that you’d like to recommend?
hope you are having a good day.
kathy
Tana says
Thank you Kathy. I am glad to know I am not the only one who finds children books just as wonderful as an adult and I did as a kid.
Have a good day Kathy!
Claudia says
Sometimes I take a book about Blythes with me to read before bedtime. Very calming.
Stay safe, Tana.
Tana says
Your Blythes are so much fun to see. Thank you Claudia! You and Don have a wonderful day.
Claudia says
Thank you, Tana. You, too!
Stay safe.
linda in ky says
dear Claudia/Don — sorry re pain/exhaustion you all are having — rest/relax could be a help?? altho this girl is not my favorite (no red hair, ha!) she is very lovely — this dress suits her well. never thought of using handkerchiefs for doll clothes, but this works. that pix of your outside seems so calm — we are very dry here but when I go outside, have to do a full body scan for ticks, b/c they have been very bad (I’m a bug magnet !) — always thought they were worse in wet weather — wrong again, ha! are you all careful or does your area not have ticks? hoping you feel better soon. stay safe
Claudia says
We have deer ticks and wood ticks here. We check each other every time we do any significant work outside. We’ve both had lyme disease.
Stay safe, Linda.
ceci says
Sorry you all are both having aches and pains! We usually have to have a few very uncomfortable days to be motivated to close all the windows and turn on the AC, we are so addicted to hearing the birds through the screens.
Ceci
Claudia says
I know. I love hearing the birds and I hate giving that up.
Stay safe, Ceci.
Wendy T says
The dress screams retro, from the colors to the style. I’d love to be able to wear dresses like that. But I get to sew similar dresses for my real life daughter.
Take care of your backs!
Claudia says
I wish I had that tiny waist, Wendy.
Stay safe.
Elaine in Toronto says
Madeleine looks very 50s in her pretty handkerchief dress and cool, too, already for tomorrow’s 90 degrees. I have a pattern to make dresses from handkerchiefs but haven’t stirred myself to do so yet. Your Maple Grove looks very cool and peaceful. Enjoy. Rest those backs. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
We will, Elaine.
Thanks.
Stay safe.
Barrie Wilber says
I love Madeleine’s dress… definitely ready for some sun, but no showers. And of course, her shoes are amazing…so cute!
That brilliant clematis against the green is a beautiful photo!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Barrie.
Stay safe.
Jenny says
Do you ever frame your nature photographs? They’re so stunning. And p.s., I would always say to install the air conditioner. :)
Claudia says
Not really. We already have a lot of frames hanging on our walls!
Stay safe, Jenny.
Elizabeth says
Your property is so pretty! The trees are so inviting and cool looking. We had a full month of May Gray here, and now we’re in the throes of June Gloom — and for both I am very grateful. We will have days rivaling Hades soon enough. Remember when you could wear a sweet little dress like that? I certainly do, not any longer though. Sigh.
Claudia says
No longer for me, either! I miss those days.
Stay safe.
jeanie says
That dress is darling! She looks so ready to party!
Super hot here, too. We don’t have air but so far the fan is holding. So far.
Claudia says
So far. I’m ready for cooler weather!
Stay safe, Jeanie.
