There’s a House Inside My House

June 14, 2009 at 1:36 pm by Claudia

Look what I found! I have mentioned wanting a dollhouse several times in the past…you remember, right? During one of my every-once-in-a-while searches on Craigslist, I found this. I was searching in the area of New York state surrounding Mockingbird Hill Cottage. (For those of you who are not regular readers of this blog, I am working in San Diego temporarily and my home is in New York.) After researching this style, I realized it was a dollhouse manufactured by Real Good Toys – they make high quality dollhouse kits. But – lucky for me – it was already assembled and the ad said it just needed some TLC. And even more lucky for me, it was $30. The unfinished kit alone is just under two hundred dollars!

So, I contacted the woman selling this and after peppering her with questions, asked her to hold on to it until I spoke with my husband. Would he do me a big favor and drive to a neighboring town to pick up a dollhouse? The first words out of his mouth were “Where are we going to put it?” It was a valid question. Our cottage is small, small, small. I said I didn’t know, but how could I pass this up, and you know I’ve been wanting a dollhouse, and please, please, please?

I even went on Mapquest and printed out the driving directions and emailed them to him.

Bless his heart, he drove out there the next day and loaded it into the car. He even called me after he got it and said that he thought it was really cool. Yippee! It needs some repair and of course, the inside is totally undecorated. That gives me the chance to wire it, paint, make and buy furniture….I get excited just thinking about it.

$30? I mean, I would have to be crazy to pass that up.

(Pardon the photo quality – I took this photo from the Craigslist post.)

It’s darling, Claudia! Your husband sounds a little like mine although he stopped asking where we’d put things a little bit ago now that I think of it. How fun it will be to decorate your doll house – neat find and how nice he went to pick it up for you.

I love the doll house and I want one, too! It is beautiful and if it is a bit weathered that is perfect, just like a real house.

Oh my gosh, Claudia – that is so awesome!!! I absolutely LOVE it! And I had to laugh (yes, out loud, LOL) at your husband’s first response! They must all have the same DNA! ha ha You are going to have so much FUN this winter! You’ll have your garden for the summer and then when the cold winds blow you’ll be tucked warmly inside MHC decorating your beautiful new home! I have Amanda’s old dollhouse on top of the armoire in our bedroom. When she got older, she didn’t feel the need to keep it in her room any longer and I couldn’t bare to put it in the basement or garage (her dad and I spent MANY MANY hourse building it from a kit, and it isn’t a quarter the size of yours!!!!) Someeday I’ll have to get it down and photograph it. It’s nothing elaborate, but lots of memories :)

Lucky you! This was steal. I had to laugh when your hubby said where are you going to put it? That is something my hubby would have said too. My sister had a cool dollhouse when we were kids. When I grew up I wanted one too. I have yet to find one this cool though. Enjoy it!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
