They’re Chomping on my Garden Again

June 28, 2025 at 8:22 am by Claudia

More day lilies have opened.

Some pesky deer have been chomping on my David phlox (just like last year) and even some of my coneflowers – that has never happened before! So I sprayed everything the other day, but I’ll spray again today as we’ve had some rain. Oh, and I saw that my big hosta had been chomped on.

It’s all out war now.

I mowed yesterday – I was just going to mow the back forty, but I ended up mowing the corral, too. Boy, that tires me out! I didn’t get to the lilac side of the front lawn, so Don is going to get to that today or tomorrow. Needless to say, today I will be taking it somewhat easy, though I think I’ll be doing some pruning. Everything is out of control at the moment.

We watched The Lady Eve  last night on TCM. It’s one of my favorite movies – Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, William Demarest and a great supporting cast in a screwball comedy directed and written by the great Preston Sturges. Oh my heavens, we had such a good time watching it!

The bee balm fully opened.

I’m going to do my best to avoid the news this weekend. I reached burnout yesterday. The weekend will consist of reading, working in the garden, hanging out with my husband and eating some of the apple pie he’s going to make later today.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Deer are a constant issue here. I vary what I put on the plants but I found fishing line works pretty good. They don’t notice it but they can feel it when they try to eat the plants.
Our mourning dove fledglings are gone. I saw them huddled together under a bush for a whole day. It was as if their mom told them to stay and don’t move. They seem to be gone now . Yesterday I walked around the side of the house and another mourning dove has built a nest in a hanging flower pot. I guess that plant won’t be watered for a month.
    Love hearing about your garden.

wish there was a solution good for you two and the chompers.

your plans for the day sound real nice … enjoy!

my sister and i had fun at the big arts festival yesterday. found a painting i’d love to have, but had to leave it there … $4500.

i don’t enjoy or function well in hot, humid weather, which we have again today, but i need to finish bringing over the smaller things that i can carry … kitchen stuff, some clothes, that kind of thing (my goal is that the movers only have the furniture to move, nothing else). won’t accomplish that all today, but best i get to doing what i can.

hope you, don and everyone else have a great weekend. stay safe in every way.

I don’t know many people who function well in high humidity. Neither of us do, but I seem to suffer from it more than Don.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

hope you both are cool and comfortable!

i, too, think that most people don’t like higher humidity, but i know a couple who seem to flourish in hot weather and don’t lose their energy or get crabby when it’s humid, people that dislike anything less than sunny 80+ degree days. to each their own, of course, but i am not one of those people! :)

happy, safe weekend to you and don.

My hostas are gone! They are in a ring around a tree in our backyard.
I noticed a few days ago that the leaves are all gone, nothing left except stems.
Yesterday I noticed that a pot of impatiens on the deck has been eaten as well. It’s a free salad bar at our house I guess. I should’ve sprayed to repel them but the deer haven’t bothered the plants for a few years so I didn’t think about it.
    Too late now.
    Enjoy the pie!

Oh no! I’m so sorry, Mariyn. I think it varies from year to year, depending on the deer. They never used to bother things, but then again, we had dogs and their scent may have made a difference.

      Stay safe.

Your flowers are beautiful…and such a nice pop of color. Sounds like they’re popular with the deer, too. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen ‘The Lady Eve,’ but it certainly is the type of movie I enjoy. Enjoy your apple pie!

I recorded Lady Eve. Rick has never seen it and I’m pretty sure he’d like it! I hear you on the deer — same thing here. Chill out this weekend — that’s what I’m trying to do!

We worked outside all day, so we’re tired. Tomorrow, we’ll chill out.

Fighting Mother Nature is a losing cause around here…I had yo learn to adapt. Spray foliage when can…and hide other plants not in their buffet line. So far so good around here. Just can’t believe how early everything seems to be this year. Half of my hostas are already blooming or just about to, and half of my hydrangeas are blooming…the other half not a bud in sight. We’ve been working in the yard most of the week when it wasn’t raining. Now we can rest.

Enjoy your apple pie…and the rest of your weekend! ;)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
