This and That

November 10, 2023 at 8:32 am by Claudia

Between the time change and Wonderland of Play, I swear it’s taken me the entire week to recover! Getting used to the time change always takes a few days, of course. And as I live a fairly low-key life these days, a huge event like WOP wipes me out. But it was oh so worth it.

I’ve been doing little chores around the house, one of which was installing a shelf in the office. It’s to the left of my desk between the pink cabinet and the wall. I’ve been messing with it for a few days; first trying to find the studs. They were a little too far away from the wall (a wall shared by the office and our bedroom closet.) This house was flipped and sometimes it shows. So then it was plan #2, using dry wall anchors. The first one worked perfectly. The second was a screw up on my part, I drilled a too-large hole so the anchor disappeared in the wall. Yesterday, I went to Lowes and bought new anchors, a new level (I can’t find the one I had,) some more spackle, and some joint compound for my work on the dollhouse. The shelf is in a narrow area bounded by the desk and the cabinet so it involved some bizarre body positions, but I finally did it.

It’s for my Gene Marshalls. On the left, Hello Hollywood (with a suit designed by my friend Doug,) Love at First Sight, a Simply Gene wearing Mandarin Mood, Iced Coffee, Tea Time at the Plaza, and Warmest Wishes – a special collaboration with FAO Schwarz.

This arrived in the mail:

I was on the waiting list at the library, but since our system involves many local libraries, my number in the queue was way too high. So I bit the bullet and bought it. I’m going to start it today. Speaking of books, I was ready to dive into a new mystery when I went to bed last night. It had great reviews. After 20 pages .I could go no further. The writing was terrible. Sigh.

That’s why Barbra has moved up in my queue.

And one more photo – the girls are fighting over this helmet. It’s Pru’s turn to wear it.

She’s still shoeless because Mom has run out of shoes. More are on the way. I thought this picture might give you a better view of the hat/helmet.

Okay. I’m due to have a chat with Doug this morning, so I have to get going and make that second cup of coffee.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

that shelf looks like a great place for the genes. good job on the installation!

the hat is very cute. i love hats (have/wear several myself) and i love seeing people wear hats.

same feeling here about the time change and big events … but worth it.

enjoy that new book, more coffee and chat with a friend.

i finished knitting that “barbie”-pink scarf. had said i wasn’t enjoying that acrylic yarn, looked at my yarn stash and found another skein of it so rather than go to one more store to return it, i am knitting another scarf with it. had a good knitting day yesterday (more than forty rows, 35 stitches across). if i can keep that pace, it will be done soon and i will be glad about that.

    happy, safe friday everyone!

Big events are worth it. I don’t think the time change is, though.

Glad to hear you’re starting in on another scarf, Kathy.

      Stay safe.

i was unclear in how i wrote that; sorry.

i have long thought daylight saving time should stay one way the entire year because of the difficulties it causes, especially when clocks are turned forward each spring. also because we’re either leaving lights on later in the morning due to darkness or turning them on earlier at night.

hope your day is going well.

Pru looks darling! Perfect hat for her! It’s so disappointing to start a book that just doesn’t work. I’ve had a few of those lately… Hope Barbra is interesting!

I heard Barbra interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR and she was delightful. I really liked her. I have always loved her voice/talent but knew little of her personality other than interviews on entertain news programs and others opinions of her from a long time ago.
    Have a nice weekend.
    Take Care,
    Kaye

Hi Kaye, I heard that interview too and am excited about reading her book. I usually don’t read bios but she has always intrigued me.

        Hi Wendy,

I read your blog! I use your watercolors for inspiration for my “attempts.”

I sawa a bit of an interview with Barbra and her husband, Jim Brolin. They seem genuinely happy together.

      Stay safe, Kaye,

You have a lovely collection of Gene Marshall dolls but my favourites will be the Blythe dolls. Pru looks darling in the new helmet, cozy and warm for a blustery winter day.

Enjoy Barbra’s book. She is supposed to be on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on November 13th. I just wish his show was on a little earlier.
    Hugs, Elaine

Well, apples and oranges. One is a fashion doll meant to dress and admire, the other is more for play. I love them both, but I love the Blythes because I can pose them and their faces are so inidividual.

      Stay safe, Elaine.

The hat is so whimsical! Just ideal for your Blythes. Thanks for reminding me about looking for Barbra in the library. I’m sure there will be a long queue.

dear Claudia/Don — so glad your “special” trip was a good one — desire for travel is limited here. grocery visits are really all I do outside our house — product of aging??? probably, LOL. Your “glamorous” girls are very lovely, good you “made” special place for them. sure hope you/Don have a good, safe, healthy weekend.

Life has been a bit crazy here so I’m just catching up on your adventures at the Wonderland of Play (what a lovely name). It’s always so much fun to be with others who share your passion and to be able to see and be able to purchase the things the talented and creative people make. The little basket and hat you bought are simply adorable.

I was at Costco this morning and almost bought the Streisand memoir. The price was certain right so I’ll probably pick it up the next time I’m there. Been a fan forever.

    Take care,
    Kay

First of all, congratulations to you and Don with the settlement of the SAG contract. I hope the ratification goes through and work comes flowing!

Eager to see progress on the doll house. And loving the hat on Pru. Your Gene Marshalls look wonderful on the shelf. Well done..

Barbra’s book is on my Christmas list. (At the moment it’s the only thing on my Christmas list!) You know we will want a full report! Glad you bought it — it looks like a keeper.

    Happy weekend, my friend!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
