The weather yesterday and today has been glorious. No humidity and sunshine, something we certainly don’t take for granted having been through this crazy summer and its crazy weather. We sat out on the porch this morning feeling a cool breeze, listening to the faint ringing of the wind chimes, marveling at how lovely it is.
I also had one of those mornings where I LOVE MY HOUSE. You know those days? When you look at everything and remember the story behind it? When you look at textures and light and items gathered over the years and feel profoundly grateful?
That was and is my morning.
So I circled around and took some pictures. Seeing things through the lens of my camera adds another layer of awareness.
Now that I think on it, these butter pats were from a booth in another antique shop that is run by the same woman who has the booth in my local shop where I found the cubby cabinet.
Sigh of happiness.
I hope all is well with you this Friday morning. Members of the Resistance, we’re seeing cracks in this administration. We’re beginning to see a glimmer of daylight at the end of the tunnel. I’m greatly encouraged. Who knows what might happen today?
Happy Friday.

Thank you, Kathy.

Loved your photos this morning, especially of your beautiful pottery. And what is the name of the plant in your last photo. Also, is it a succulent? I love all the different colors on the leaves.
Claudia says
It’s a peperomia. There are a lot of varieties of peperomia. This one has been sort of a pain in the tush, to be honest. But it’s hanging in there.
Shanna says
My eyes went straight to the little bird on top of the red box, in the first photo! Though all of your things are beautiful, I wondered about his story. Happy Friday to you.
Claudia says
Just a little bird that I got online. He is standing on the box containing Scoutie’s ashes. Phoenix rising.
Shanna says
Love that. Beautiful.

The turquoise McCoy is tied with the cubby photo as favorites. The horse bit, though….I see why you like that…so intricate. And, yes….I am heartened by the news….still hopeful.
Since you asked….parts of Madison are flooding. And with the added rain that is predicted, there will undoubtedly be more. I’ve never seen the creek this high before in 35 years…so who knows what will happen in our little neighborhood. Fingers crossed! So, if you are so inclined, we sure could use all the positive vibes you can send this way. Some folks have already lost their homes in the low lying areas of Madison…..their basement walls collapsed. So….positive thoughts please! Thanks! ;)
Claudia says
Sending positive vibes. tay safe! I’m so sorry for those who have lost their homes. Heartbreaking.
The horse bit was my grandfather’s. I used to stare at it as a child because it was red and beautiful.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
As Donnamae said, Madison and surrounding areas need many many positive vibes. Esp with more rain in the forecast. Our daughter lives right downtown on the Isthmus and our son lives about 3 blocks from Lake Monona, so I am fretting as I sit here on this cloudy day.
The pictures are beautiful, Claudia, and I still marvel at how that shelf unit fits so perfectly in its new home. It is as if someone took measurements to make it precisely fit that corner!
Donnamae says
I’ll be sending my own positive vibes to your daughter and son. Lake Monona is closer to flooding than Lake Mendota….they released water from Lake Mendota. We need sunshine…not more rain!! ;)

I’m so sorry that you all have to deal with this. Sending positive thoughts for you and yours. Please keep us posted, Chris.

Lovely photos. I LOVE our home the same way you love yours. We, too, are very blessed with what we have.
I just can’t believe how perfect your new cubby cabinet fits into that space. It’s like it was custom built to go there.
Enjoy your beautiful weather and hope you and Don have a wonderful weekend.
Claudia says
I know! It just fits in there. Couldn’t be more perfect. Thanks, Cathy.
Barbara W. says
Lovely photos! I particularly like the decorative horse bit.
Perhaps “Hindsight 20/20” should be the Democrat slogan for the next election..
Claudia says
Perfect slogan, Barbara! The horse bit was a part of my grandfather’s collection- He had at least a thousand of them that he collected from all over the world. The collection was sold, but I grabbed this one before it left us. It was my favorite as a child because I loved red.

Claudia, With such a sweet cottage and charming keepsakes, you should be having sighs of happiness all the time!! Do you use the butter pats? I haven’t heard dishware referred to like that before.
Claudia says
No I don’t use them. They’re called butter pats because they held butter slices/balls and were part of an individual place setting.
tammy j says
I could almost feel the cool morning porch air of my childhood when you spoke of you and Don sitting out there early on yours. how I loved it!
it’s those wonderful memories I cherish. it was upstate NY. and it was so beautiful!
Claudia says
It IS beautiful here, Tammy!

Hi Claudia, love your photos. I’m the one that asked about the chair the other day, it’s actually the one in your second to last photo. Only asking because I have a similar one only it’s a dark walnut, the designer was Milo Baughman and that chair looks similar to a lot of his stuff.
Claudia says
I don’t think it is. It’s just a chair I picked up for $50 many years ago. I chose it because it is like one my grandparents had when I was growing up! But you’ve intrigued me…
monica says
Nice pictures! Thanks for sharing.
The weather of the past couple of days has been a fall preview. It’s so nice to open the windows & get some fresh air. I’ve missed that.
I’m trying not to get too excited about the recent happenings re: the orange one. It’s amazing how quick his friends turn against him. ha ha Let’s see what it will take for this nightmare to end. This has been so exhausting. I know you know what I mean.
Peace~
Claudia says
I think it’s the beginning of the end. I’m not going to predict how long the ‘end’ might take, but I do think we’re seeing a path to get him out of office.
Completely and totally exhausting, Monica.

I enjoyed the photos of items in your house, and like any true book lover, I checked the titles of every book showing. I also wanted to mention that I believe we live about 2200 miles from each other, but the zinnia photo you had on IG could have been taken in my garden. The colors and placement were identical to mine which was fun since I simply threw in seeds so they grew randomly.
Claudia says
Same here. I just dug a little furrow and in the seeds went!

I really thought it was something special how you said, “I love my house” and it is because you are seeing all those things that mean something in yours and Don’s life that you have carefully selected to put in your cottage. I, too, do this. Besides what I have collected, my mother died 8 years ago and so I have some of her things, little ceramics, s (1950’s) lipstick tube, color red of course, etc. Looking around my house as I am sure your house does,it brings us a sense of happiness and contentment.
I really like to read different kinds of blogs but truthfully, these “tablescapes” drive me nuts.
Your “egg” cabinet looks great!
Claudia says
Boy do I hear you! I have never been into ‘tablescapes!’ They drive me nuts, too!
I’m glad you feel the same way as I do about HOME.
Janet in Rochester says
Once again, I learned something here! Never heard of “butter pats” before. How about that? Back in the 80s I worked part-time in the bridal registry of our area’s nicest department store [now long gone] amongst every kind of china, flatware, stemware, silver hollow ware etc but never ran across anything like these cute little square plates. Flatware especially can be very specifically-purposed [jelly spoons, cake breakers, shrimp forks, honey dippers etc] but plates just for butter itself is a newbie. Bread-&-butter plates are the closest thing I can think of. But even though these “pats” don’t look large enough to hold the bread component, I’m guessing they could still be practical for maybe olives, pickles, other small veggie-ish items I guess. Or maybe a cute little favor for each place? Anyway they’re very whimsical. And we need more whimsy in our lives these days! Peace.

Butter pats are also round. They were made in both shapes.
Yes, I’m all for whimsey!

Claudia, I love the quiet in my house in the mornings. I love to see a stream of the sunrise on the walls. Your house plants always look very good. I think that cubby is so sweet by the stairs. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

I do, too. Love quiet mornings!
Thank you so much, Susie!

I do remember butter pats when I was a kid Claudia…I don’t recall my family using them but we would pass the butter dish around…Mom would always have bread or rolls and butter on the table for meals…she was a very good cook…We didn’t have much but she always managed to have good meals for us….It is always nice to walk around your home and admire the things that you have and love…it makes me feel warm and happy!…I hope you are right about the orange cry baby!
Claudia says
We never used them either. They’re really from another time.
Thanks, Nancy!

Looking through this post, I remember it was you that inspired me to collect McCoy.
I understand how you feel. I love your house too. Mine has been feeling unloved and it really shows. I better change that. I believe houses are seeing, breathing, hearing entities and they show love if you do.
On an end note…if I could walk by your darling egg cup cabinet every day, I’d be very happy.
Claudia says
Love what you said about houses. I agree!
