Topsy-Turvy

February 24, 2012 at 9:25 am by Claudia

We took a little walk on the Rail Trail on Wednesday. This one was longer – about 3 miles. It was a sunny, spring-like day. Very quickly, we shed our coats, happily basking in the warmth of the sun. We marveled that all this was happening on a day in February. In the northeast.

The sky was gorgeous. If you look in the upper-right hand corner of the photo, there is an opening in the clouds. I keep seeing the shape of a bird. What do you see?
Our mountain ridge is in the background. I call it ‘ours.’ I suppose everyone around here does. This is the same ridge that we can see from our house. Whenever we take these walks, we are reminded once again that we live in a beautiful part of the country.
So on we walked, talking about the warm weather, thinking that, most assuredly, spring is around the corner. Yes, it can only be a week or so away.
I woke up this morning to this:
What????
I went to bed last night with not a flake in sight. A few short hours later, there is heavy, wet snow everywhere. Look how our chicken wire corral fence is sagging under the wet snow. There’s not a whole lot of it and I suspect it will melt rather quickly.
What a strange winter this has been. Everything is topsy-turvy. (Another old fashioned word that I love.)
I wrote the other day about being in my fifties and feeling young and vital.
I’ve suddenly begun getting emails from the Scooter Store.
Back off, Scooter Store. I’m not ready for you yet.
The willow tree is coming down on Tuesday. Can’t think about it. I will be somewhere else that day, trying to forget what is happening to my favorite tree. I’m sorry, willow. I love you. But your beauty comes with a price. You are too destructive. We have to let you go.
I’ll have some shop updates over the weekend, so be sure to check in!
Have a wonderful Friday.

Beautiful photos! Before I read your post, I saw an angel in that first photo. Again, I am so sorry about your tree. I would feel exactly the same way. We have a huge old maple in our backyard that may need to be taken down in the next year or two. So sad!

Hi Claudia, I too was shocked this morning to awaken to the same heavy, wet snow! I was outside in just a light sweater yesterday with the dog! So far, nothing has melted as the snow has a crust on top and the temperature is 32. Have you considered taking some cuttings of your tree? Maybe you can force them, replant, use the sticks in an arrangement, or even find a way to weave a basket from the soft branches. You will have a piece of your tree with you. Linda

Linda has an excellent idea about taking a cutting and replanting it. I saw someone do that and they grew just fine. Plant them on a far corner of the property.

    Hello you!

We were expecting snow this morning too, but didn’t get ANY. It’s been a very strange winter here also.

Just think of all the sunshine that will flood your rooms when the willow is gone!

Will be 77 here in my part of NC today with possible tornado activity this afternoon. Wish they were calling for snow. I like our little 2 or 3 inches we get here that shuts everything down.

Loved your photos. Old trees give such grace and grandeur to gardens. I loved your commentors idea about making something from the tree. I love the “wattle fences” made from willows and have made some projects. The good thing about snow is that it waters those spring bulbs. I guess that’s something good.

It was 90 here in Central Texas, yesterday. Today, there is a cold wind blowing. We’re used to quick weather changes, here.
Your mountain ridge is beautiful. So are the shots of the snow.
    Have a good weekend.

Claudia, This has certainly been a strange winter. We are getting flurries right now…but it won’t last. I keep thinking about last winter, it snowed in November and lasted till March. What a depressing winter that was. Take care when you are out and about. Smiles, Susie

That would certainly be a shock to the system. I’m not a cold weather person at all. I remember having a willow tree in our backyard in Mississippi – but we had a huge backyard and it was about the only tree out there. Sorry to hear yours has to go. Hope you have a great weekend. Tammy

Love the pictures. Yes, strange winter for sure. But as much as I like snow it has been nice. Warm here but expecting snow. Very windy right now.
I saw an angel as well.
Have a good week-end. So excited that yours and Brenda’s ersy shops are off to a good start.

It’s been a strange winter here also~ we need so much more rain. Your snow photos are so pretty. Hey– maybe you could install skiis on a scooter and turn it into a snowmobile. Okay, maybe not.
    Hugs,

My husband laughs when that catalog from the Scooter Store comes, not me, I frown! I’m NOT ready for one of those yet.

I wanted to tell you, I’m 45 mins outside of LA, and what used to take 2 or 2 1/2 hrs to get to San Diego is now a 4 to 5 hour trip. So sadly that leaves San Diego out for me for a day trip.

We had snow as well but it had vanished by mid-morning and then it drizzled all day. Good old New England weather! Your ‘views’ are just so lovely. Are there flowers blooming on that range in the spring and summer? Have a lovely weekend!

Hi Claudia! Could you please show us how to make a photo header for our blogs using Picnik before it expires? I made a new one, but in a round-about way. I’d love to find out the real way to do it before it’s too late. Maybe I’d even make two or three for safekeeping for later–you know what I mean? I’d really appreciate a quick tutorial on this, if you can. Thanks a bunch! :-) Jennifer

    Claudia,
I wouldn’t mind having a mountain range on the horizon. (My mom grew up by the Cape Breton Highlands.) I’m glad you don’t need a scooter to get to it. Really, where do people get the idea to send such things. Your poor email account needs to filter a bit more; I’ll peek into the “junk” folder of mine, on occasion, and am amazed at the weirdness that is corralled there.

Don’t feel bad Claudia, in the mail just yesterday I got an ad for pre-arranging your funeral. Not yet, folks, I’m still alive and kickin’!
Snow is beautiful, but I’m glad I’m seeing it in your photos and not my yard. So far it’s been a really mild winter here in Texas; I keep telling Eddie that just means we’ll have a blizzard in April.
    Have a great weekend!

Hi Claudia, stunning photos! I am missing winter so – people look at me very strangely when I say that I want a big snowstorm! Love old fashioned words too – my dad uses the word ‘salve’ for ointment – it’s so endearing to hear these little pieces of his growing up. xxoo Ciao, bella!

Hey, see if you can snag some willow branches to remember the tree by … we have “sticks” as the flower arrangement in our church right now, because it’s Lent, and by Holy Week, they are budding green … I don’t know if your willow branches would do that, but they would still look cool, even without water…

I saw a clown head silhouette in that opening in the clouds. Strange…I don’t usually see clowns! LOL

    Your ridge is indeed lovely!

I hear you on the Scooter Store! LOL

So sorry you are losing your willow! It’s always a sorry day when a tree has to go. Perhaps you can plant another further from the area.

I’ve had those days… when you wake up to snow.
Isn’t it lovely how snow moves in without a sound? It sneaks up on you and says “surprise” with a Flash of White all over!

love your photos, they are beautiful.

…and ‘back off Scooter Store!’… you gave me quite the chuckle, girl!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
