Heavens! It might reach 36 degrees today! A regular heat wave. It will be nice to see some snow melt. Since we had that big storm over 2 weeks ago, nothing – and I mean nothing – has melted.
On Monday, I organized our vinyl collection. We used to just call it our record collection, didn’t we? But now, the word is vinyl. Anyway, most of the records were under the spinet desk next to the piano, which is where our turntable is. Don was sitting in his chair and I was sitting on the floor, occasionally showing him a record that we’d forgotten about.
Side note: I used to have over 1000 albums. If I ever had an exact count, at this point in my life I sure don’t remember what the number was. They moved with me everywhere I lived. But they had to be tossed because of the conditions in the shed. It was heartbreaking for me. I managed to save some of them, but not many. It seems like every other day I mention some album of mine that I miss. We’ve been slowly accumulating some favorites again, because we love them. I have a lot of CDs and some tapes, but to me, there’s nothing like the sound of vinyl and the sight of a record spinning on a turntable.

I would love to own another component system again – you know, the kind where you have a separate receiver, turntable, and CD player. Yes, I got rid of mine years ago and I regret it.
This sorting of the albums sent us to Barnes and Noble on Tuesday because we decided we’d each buy a new album. I’ll tell you one thing: B & N’s labeling and organization of their stock needs work. “Haphazard” is the word I’d use. We spent quite a bit of time there and when we finally went to the checkout, an older guy chatted with us but then started to trash LPs/Vinyl/records. He would “never” have them. He sold all of his. He hated the pops and sounds. On and on and on. We would politely counter with the fact that we love them. He wouldn’t listen. All of this while 3 people were waiting in line and we were just trying to get out of there. Don said, “You know we just spent money here on vinyl.” But the guy was clueless and kept it up. So we turned around to exit and Don muttered an expletive.
I wonder what his manager would say if he knew that this guy was trashing something they sell?
I miss record stores. I could write reams about them but I already did. Here’s the link to that post.
We also stopped at Michael’s because I’m going to crochet an afghan for Don and needed some yarn. He got to pick out the colors.

There’s also some red in there. He wanted a pop of red.
Since it’s been so long since I’ve crocheted anything I’m going to have to practice. I hope it comes back to me quickly. I’m looking forward to the meditative quality of stitching.
I have to finish a book today as it’s due at the library tomorrow. It’s a great book by Michael Connelly. But is anyone else out there having a hard time concentrating lately?
Stay safe.
Happy Wednesday.

The only records I still have are the first record I ever received (a gift from my older brother when I was 9 years old) – Ricky Sings Again by Ricky Nelson. I accidentally sat on it and cracked the edge but still kept it to play the inner songs. The other one is Sesame Disco which my kids loved and we played over and over again while we danced and danced. I can’t play either of them but I can’t get rid of them as they have such wonderful memories attached to them.
Of course! You must hang on to them, Ellen!
Thanks so much.
Stay safe.
We love vinyl, too. There was a vinyl record store within walking distance of us and we spent many happy hours there and we were very sad when it closed. I love the colours Don chose for his afghan. They look so nice together. What an excellent idea to have a pop of red. Our snow hasn’t melted either but we live in hope. Hugs, Elaine
I can see some water drops coming out of the downspout, but it’s midafternoon, so the snow isn’t melting very fast.
Stay safe, Elaine.
Sam the Record Man on Yonge Street was our music mecca back in the day!
I went there a couple of times on trips to Toronto! Thanks for triggering a lovely memory, Barbara.
Stay safe.
I like the colors for the afghan. That will be pretty. Alas, the manager will never know unless he’s told. That guy should NOT be on a counter.
My LPs met the same fate as yours. I don’t even have a turntable anymore. I saved a few (mostly Broadway shows) that had great covers, thinking one day I might frame a bunch of them in 12×12 frames and do an arrangement on the wall. Except I’ve run out of walls.
Meanwhile, working on a Valentine book for Rick, plugging away on a book and nearly done with my dishcloth-turned-cowl that I’m knitting, just to remember how. I’m enjoying having something productive to do while watching TV!
No time to seek out the manager, unfortunately.
I had an extensive collection of soundtracks and original Broadway cast album. I miss them.
Thanks, Jeanie.
Stay safe.
Yes, Claudia, I’m having a hard time concentrating! Part of it is that I moved, but almost every day there’s something unbelievable, and not in a good way, coming from the leader of our country. Just this morning about the democrats not being invited to the traditional governor’s meeting, a bipartisan opportunity. It has been nice watching the Olympics, having a slight diversion. My sisters and I had a great record collection; they are mostly gone now too. Have fun crocheting. Don picked some nice colors!
He did, didn’t he? I can’t wait to start work on it.
Stay safe, Barrie.
Ah! Vinyl or LPs as we used to call them. Over a thousand must have been a very impressive collection.
In my teens, we used to love dancing to Tamla Motown music and I had a few of the Motown Chartbusters compilation albums. All my music is now on CD although I still have a few LPs, I no longer have anything to play them on.
I have kept a few of my Dad’s including a Beach Boys album from 1966.
Really like the wool colours that Don has chosen, I would be happy to wear a jumper in any one of them.
Happy Wednesday
Oh, I’m a Motown girl, having been born in Detroit. Still some of my favorite music ever!
I love those colors, too, Dee Dee. Don did a good job!
Stay safe.
So happy to hear you are finally going to be out of the deep freeze. We have 40’s to 50’s predicted starting Friday…but it probably is an anomaly. False spring.
The colors that Don picked out for the afghan look really good together, especially with a pop of red. Anxious to see it. I am sorry to hear about your album collection. I do hope you are able to replace your favorites. I smiled when I saw the Beatle ‘s album….i have the same one.
Yes…I am having a hard time reading, I thought it was the book I’m reading. But I can’t seem to read anything if it’s too long. I find my mind wandering, and then I have to go back and reread. Don’t know if it’s my age, or all the bad things happening around us.
Just happy right now that the sun is out, and the snow is melting. Enjoy your day! ;)
Same here. Wandering thoughts, no ability to stick to something. I think it’s all the bad things happening around us.
Thanks, Donnamae.

My Son In Law has a large vinyl collection and my Grands love vinyl. We have some great records shops here (University town) and they enjoy browsing for records as an outing sometimes. Cold here but warming up some. I get my first iron infusion next Monday and I’m so hoping to finally start feeling better. Take care and I love the yarn colors Don chose.
We have a couple of great shops around here. Very small, each of them, but the town just north of us is a university town, so that’s why we have some access to LPs.
Thanks so much, Linda.

I agree with everything you said about B&N. They opened a B&N last year where I live , it is so huge that I get frustrated looking for something. I wanted to ask for a map.
I had a wonderful bit of luck last week. I got a (almost) brand new hardback copy of “The Black Wolf” for $2.00 on The Friends of Summit County used book shelf! I was concerned so I asked the clerk if it was a mistake, he said no. It made me very Happy.
May sun shine come your way,
Kaye
Wow! What a great find, Kaye. Hurrah!
Thanks so much.

My late husband had a huge and eclectic record collection . Both our kids now have record decks and the collection is shared between us . Music charts a pathway through life I think
Decades ago , with two very young children , I was in the huge Virgin store in Times Square looking for an album by Nazareth for Tony
Unable to find it I sought help – and was directed to the Christian music section …..
Enjoy your music memories
Siobhan x
It does. Music has always been a huge part of my life and I’m grateful for the exposure I’ve had to all sorts of music, and for those years playing the piano, and singing in musicals.
Oh, that’s so funny about finding the record in the Christian music section!
Thanks so much, Siobhan.

Zero concentration going on around here. Just hanging on for now. Happy crocheting!
Hang on and take it easy, Shanna. My love to Fred.\

The colors picked out for Don’s afghan look so good together. Would you mind sharing info on the carpet/rug under the basket? I love it and can visualize it in our home. Thank you Claudia!
That’s a very old rug I got from Pottery Barn many, many years ago – probably 25 years ago. They no longer carry it.
Thanks so much.

Yes I am having a difficult time reading. I thought I would never say that. It is my enjoyment, my therapy and just having a book in my hands was wonderful.
In the state of these times, I am finding I am not watching the news and when I do the headline the other day was World War III and that took me right out of the news again for a while.
Marion
That would do it. I just read about Pam Bondi’s testimony to congress. She looked insane.
I had to turn it off.
Stay safe, Marion.
Beautful yarn colors, the greens! (Nice rug underneath, too.) I’m a knitter and rely heavily on the Help Desk, aka You Tube, for instruction.
I used videos when I was first learning crochet. Very helpful.
Stay safe, Lynda.
I’m having a difficult time concentrating, Claudia. But my excuse is the virus I’m currently fighting. I can see my near future, as both daughters are also sick but they’re ahead of me, one being a week and the other a couple of days. We’re like the train of virus and I’m the caboose.
My daughter made a huge pot of chicken lemon soup with plant-based “chicken”, kale and wild rice. We finished it last night so today we’ll make a huge pot of barley mushroom soup with tofu and veg. I love huge pots of soup with everything in them so we don’t have to cook for a few days, merely wallow in our misery.
However, I’ve been quietly sorting and organizing our stamp collection. I only have a few European countries left from two baggies of loose stamps my friend bought at a garage sale and gave to my daughter. Then the huge task of the US stamps. Good thing the majority of the collection is already organized. I’m also updating the current “value” according to the Scott catalogs. My PSA for the day: unless you have an uber-rare stamp (according to the word of an actual stamp accessor), stamp collecting won’t make you wealthy. We collect stamps for the history we learn while organizing them into the spreadsheet I created.
Oh, and we had hundreds of vinyl, LPs, singles and 78’s. I gave many of them to a friend after my husband died but kept mine and what I knew were his favorites. I’m still using the speakers and turn table I bought 40 years ago. But the tuner had to be replaced about 20 years ago. And, haha, my Walkman, is plugged into the tuner so I can play one of my thousands of CDs.
We have a Bose CD Player sitting on top of the piano. But I’d love everything to be connected to the same speakers. Seriously doubt that will happen, though!
Stay safe, Wendy.
great set-up of your records and record player, above those lovely portraits / photos of your sweet babies. <3 :) add that peek at your egg cup collection in the background and the basket of yarn on that pretty rug (i like your color choices, don) and i'm now inspired to putter around a while, then knit the rest of the day.
agree … love the sound from listening to record albums. hope that cashier gives it another try.
anyway, hope the crocheting goes well for your wrist!
don't know how many i used to have (a lot), but can tell you that now i have exactly one record album … a recording of our church's youth choir concert just before a methodist heritage trip to england in 1973 (i was 15). not well, but i can still sing along to it. :)
had a busy morning, but my "break" is over.
stay safe and have a nice day.
kathy
Thanks so much, Kathy. Just in the course of reading your comment I remembered about 5 records that I lost – all of them precious and all of that irreplaceable. Sob.
Stay safe.
: (
claudia, we have a couple really great used/new record shops here. if you tell me the titles, i will be glad to see if i can find those records here for you.
kathy
We have a wonderful little shop in the neighboring town. Should be able to find some things there. But we’ve used up our budget for this month, so we’ll wait until March. Thanks, Kathy.
We had a bunch of vinyl in our garage. Got ruined by the heat. Guy offered us $100 at our garage sale….sold! Well, Chris is back in the hospital at Mayo. He has some fluid around his heart so they are doing a procedure today. We need more prayers. I am exhausted!
Oh, no. I’m so sorry about Chris. Prayers are being sent, Deb.
Stay safe.
Claudia, I am so happy to thank you for continuing these friendly and meaningful visits. I have not been able to read your blog for weeks.Something about “the header is too large”. xo
Annette, from what I could tell when I googled that problem, it most likely comes from your browser. The is the first I’ve heard of that kind of problem. Google says to clear your browser’s cookies and cache. Hopefully, that will do the trick
