Wallpaper, Crochet, and Yucky Weather

March 4, 2026 at 8:31 am by Claudia

What a bizarre 24 hours of weather here! Wet snow fell yesterday for a few hours, which turned to rain, which turned to freezing rain overnight. Now it’s foggy and messy and yet, the temperature is going to reach 50 degrees. So we’re just going to stay inside and let Mother Nature clean up the mess on the ground. Temperatures will be warmer this week and next week, but will kind of be all over the place. You can tell that Spring is trying to break through.

I checked last year’s photos on IG and the peepers seem to arrive around March 13-15. It happened the year before as well. That’s just around the corner!

I was feeling under the weather yesterday and am still feeling that way today. Sinus crap, I think.

Progress so far. The colors are off because I had to lay this out on our bed and it’s still gloomy in that room. This little project is keeping me sane. Don really likes it, so that’s all that matters.

The dollhouse wallpaper that arrived the other day. Sigh. It’s a bit lighter and brighter than this. I tend to feel frustrated when I unwrap a package of miniature wallpaper. It’s hard to gauge the size of the print from a little sample on a web page. I may do some research today and order something brighter – especially for the hallways. The stairs are so dark that I feel the need to counteract that darkness with cheery color.

I can’t really move ahead until I have something I like. And I always like to do the living room first.

Wish me luck.

Don just went outside to explore the weather situation. I’m staying in. My head is stuffy and I need more coffee.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

    Good morning Claudia!
We got about six inches of wet snow yesterday before it turned to rain and ice and froze solid. But yes, it is supposed to reach the high forties today…. March can be so unpredictable!
As for wall paper and colors on-line… I have the same problem with thread colors for embroidery… the computer is just not an accurate gauge of color and the web sites often mention this too. And for scale of pattern… even dicier! You can zoom everything … but where’s the reference gauge? I admire anyone who can choose wall paper anyway… it is so easily understated… (why bother) or over-stated and just dominates the entire room. And the pattern repeats can be jarring if they are too strong. I do love William Morris patterns in general, their density and laciness of design can often make the pattern feel less dominant. I have to admit one of the things I love about antique dollhouses is their use of real wall paper scraps and the off scale result is so charming. But I also love the true scale beauty of a well done miniature room! Those dark hallways can be a challenge even in Real life! And sometimes the best choice is the really understated wall covering, especially if you want the furniture and decorations to take the center stage. Can you make photocopies of the ones you got that you can cut up to test in place? Sometimes that helps me see the picture more clearly before cutting the real thing!
As always, I am rooting for you… you will know it when you see it!
    Stay warm!

I do zoom everything, but it’s still a shock when I get it. I’m thinking of looking at scrapbook paper, which is a great weight and the patterns are often more bold.

      Thanks so much, Betsy.

      Stay safe.

The scarf is looking great. It is so hard to choose something by color on the internet, so I hope you find wallpaper for the doll house you like. I have some cardboard boxes to break down for recycling today, isn’t that exciting.

Even though it looks like one at the moment, it’s not a scarf. It’s an afghan. But it will take quite a while until it looks like one.

      Stay safe, Linda.

It took 2-3 weeks for the crud to leave our house. I was the least affected but my daughters had coughing for at least a week after they felt better. I hope your virus clears up very soon.

I always prefer to go into the store to look at and feel the goods. One just doesn’t know how soft a yarn is, how bright/bold the pattern is, the drape of fabric. I can go by experience but sometimes the internet lies ((!) surprise!) and the item is t as described.

Pleased you have things to do to keep your mind off other things.

It’s hard to find good dollhouse paper anywhere around here. I’d have to spend a lot of money to go into Manhattan with no guarantee that I’d like anything.

I don’t believe I have a virus – it’s all the weather changes, a dry house, and chronic sinus problems. Thank goodness I don’t have the flu!

      Thanks so much, Wendy.

Hi, it’s been awhile, but I have gotten expired wallpaper sample books from paint & wallpaper stores for free (to use for children’s crafts). Worth checking out? Lots of possibilities for your doll houses.

Yes, my godmother used to get those (that’s how I wallpapered my Barbie case!) I don’t know if they do that anymore or even where to find a wallpaper store. So much is done online these days. Thanks, though, Barb!

Don’s scarf reminds me of Dr. Who’s scarf. I think Tom Barker was the actor who played the Doctor, then . It made me happy to see the connection. Why? Because, Don is a magical person.

Hey Kaye, it’s going to be an afghan, it’s just not full size yet.

      Thanks so much, my friend.

Just wondering if wrapping paper would work if it was backed with something a little heavier? There are so many beautiful wrapping papers. Your afghan is looking pretty. That bright red and blue pop against the darker colours. How is your wrist holding up? Hugs, Elaine

Wrapping paper isn’t durable enough. And searching through all the wrapping paper available out there is not something I want to do!

My wrist is okay. My hand is been sore occasionally, but not all the time.

      Thanks for asking, Elaine.

    P. S.

I remembered you were making an afghan. I just got caught up in my memories of being a Dr. Who fan. I had hoped I would get this P.S. off before you read my comment.

I like the middle wallpaper — kind of William Morris-y. I’m curious — is the wallpaper the same degree of thickness as “real” wallpaper? I’ve had wallpaper books, some with very neutral patterns (most too big for that scale). But that might be too thick for what you need. And I’m guessing scrapbook 12×12 paper, even the heavier ones, are too small. How frustrating. I’m sure that’s very labor intensive and you don’t want to start with the wrong thing and either have to strip it or “settle.”

Meanwhile, loving the afghan. Those colors are great!

Most real life wallpaper has patterns that are way too big for a dollhouse. Scrapbook paper can work, if it comes out of a larger size book. I’m n

Claudia……love the Afghan in progress. I would be happy to curl up under that. I am having such bad pains in my hands …. arthritis and also …. this damn damp weather is a killer. I start the day out with great intentions, but it is now already half over and I have done very little. I did go to an exercise class this morning and then proceeded to eat cheese and crackers when I got home. On my second cup of coffee and watching the news. Kristi Noom is fired or something. Hope she and Cory find another job outside our government. Still cannot believe we are in a War….with Iran. I think I will plug into a class this afternoon on Steinbeck…..reading some of his short stories. I like it but there are so many people in this class that like to hear themselves talk and talk. Okay….do not want to spoil anyone’s day with my crabbiness. Take care. Hope the sun shines for us all soon.

Oh, I know. The damp weather is hard on Don’s arthritis, too.

I hope Kristi and Cory disappear and we never have to hear about them again.

      Take care of yourself, Maria.

      Stay safe, Maria.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
