Our reward for a snow-laden week:
Grandma’s Cloud Biscuits. Ummm! We haven’t had them in a long, long time. And frankly, we were too tired to deal with them earlier in the week. We’ll have some leftover for tonight’s dinner and maybe a couple for Don to take on the road.
We need a whole lot of comfort food.
Plan change: they’re running behind on Anastasia, so they won’t be having a run-through on Monday evening. I won’t be going in until Tuesday. Since they’re paying a lot for my hotel room, they’ll save a little money this way. At first, I was disappointed as we’ve worked this whole thing out so that both of us are leaving at the same time. After thinking about it a bit, I’m fine. It gives me a little time to organize after Don leaves. And, let’s face it, 6 nights in a hotel can get old quickly, so trimming it to 5 is okay by me.
And I can concentrate on helping Don get ready on this, our last day together for a while.
I can’t go there.
Fourteen Nancy Drews. Since I’m collecting volumes 1-26, I’m more than halfway there.
What did we do before we installed these shelves in the den? We’ve been here 11 years and most of that time we were shelf-less. Now, I can’t imagine life without them. When I’m sitting in my chair in the den, I constantly find my eyes drifting toward them. To yours truly, books are the best decoration. They say so much about a person, don’t you think?
If I had room, I’d build even more.
I’ve just started Jane Casey’s newest, Let the Dead Speak. I’ve reviewed some of her books and I am a big fan. We’re twitter friends and when I saw her tweeting about her book being published in Britain, I asked her when it was coming out in the States. Not until July. But then I visited Amazon and clicked on the British title and found I could get it through the Book Depository’s US branch. Whoo hoo! It arrived on Thursday and I started it last night. I’m taking it and Mo Hayder’s Birdman along with me to NYC.
And my Kindle. Because I live in fear of not having enough to read, so I always take more than I need.
By the way, The Dry by Jane Harper was excellent! It takes place in Australia and is beautifully written. It’s fairly new and I got it from my local library.
Have to go. There’s a lot to be done today, not the least of which is spending time with my husband.
Happy Sunday.

Safe travels to Don.

The biscuits look delicious. Enjoy your last day at home with Don. I hope the time away form each other goes by quickly, my friend. xo Laura
Claudia says
Thank you, Laura.

Have a happy day with Don despite so much to do to prepare for his trip. Knowing the separation is temporary doesn’t make it less difficult but focus on all the stretching and growing the two of you will do, and then all the sharing when you reunite….not only telling each other your experiences, but sharing a fun road trip home.
Claudia says
Thanks, Wendy.
Donnamae says
What a day! Just concentrate on helping Don…you’ll get through this. And, thanks for the link to the cloud biscuits you left in the comments…I’m going to print it out this time! Safe travels Don!! ;)
Claudia says
Make those biscuits, Donnamae!
tana says
I have a few of those same dishes on which you have your biscuits! The favorite piece I have is my gravy boat. It always comes out at the holidays because it is HUGE!
I know you both will find your work invigorating. Have fun!
Claudia says
My grandmother had a whole set of those dishes and I gather them whenever I can.
Christina says
Your cloud biscuits look like our scones. I’d like one please.
I like Jane Casey, too but I am a bit behind with the series. Mo Hayder’s Jack Caffery series is dark and terrifying but I think you’ll enjoy it. The second in the series still haunts me.
Wishing you and Don a lovely day together. Safe journey for both of you. x
Claudia says
Thanks for the info on the Jack Caffery series. I’m really looking forward to it!

Heavenly biscuits. If you have time later, please post the recipe again; I know you’re too busy right now.
Been thinking of you two and how today must be for you; kudos to both of you for adjusting gears as plans have had to change here and there…and now Don is off and we wish him Godspeed.
Monday will be good for you, Claudia. You can sort of pull all the loose ends together before you, too, depart. Will be looking forward to all the posts of you in NYC and Don on the road.
Vicki says
Oh, went back into comments and saw you did post the recipe; thanks for doing that!
Claudia says
You’re welcome!

The link is in one of my comment replies, Vicki.

Claudia,
You made beautiful biscuits; I bet they are so good. I am checking out the recipe.
I am glad you get an extra day at home and I hope you are doing well. Sore muscles from the clean up ? I hope that is going to be all for you guys until next winter. I have not checked the weather report for our East Coast although we in the mid Atlantic states tend to be stuck in way too warm for winter most days and frankly it can be worrisome especially for national science budget cuts. I had the heat on sporadically this morning and now I just turned the cooling on your a few mins; my window in my little office really gets the heat of the sun . THAT is NC. nowadays. We never know.
Take care and I hope Don has an easy as possible trip to CA.
Warmly
Katheryn
Claudia says
Muscles are okay now. They were sore for a couple of days. Don left about an hour ago, Katheryn.
Marilyn says
Safe trip Don.

Claudia says
Thanks, Marilyn.

Claudia those biscuits look amazing. Have you ever shared the recipe? I guess having one more day home is good and less in a hotel is always good. I know you will miss Don but he is off on a good adventure! Hugs to both of you and safe travels to Don tomorrow!
Claudia says
Yes, I shared it a couple of years ago. The link is in one of my comment replies today.

Safe travels to both of you. The biscuits do look like clouds!! Yummmm!!
Claudia says
They’re incredibly tasty.
Do says
Thanks for the recipe. Just made them, yum yum and huge improvement on my usual! Enjoy NY, how wonderful to be part of such a great production. Safe travels to Don. I feel like I know you from your blog and parallel experiences. I do live only a short distance from your former Cambridge apartment. We live in Inman Square just over the line in Somerville. I’m around your age and lived in Boston and Cambridge since my long ago 20’s! Thanks again.
Claudia says
So glad you liked them, Do!
Oh, I love that area – I remember Inman Square. Spent a lot of time around there!
Melanie says
Those are some of the most beautiful, fluffiest biscuits I’ve ever seen! I just might have to make your recipe this week even though I’m trying desperately to cut back on wheat/carbs.
I can’t imagine NOT being surrounded by books. They’re my friends. ;-) I am so grateful that we have the room downstairs for my little “library”.
Will be thinking of you and Don tomorrow…will say a prayer for safe travels for Don and peace of mind for you.
Melanie says
PS – Just looked at the recipe for your biscuits. I see the recipe calls for milk. We don’t drink/use cow’s milk…do you know if almond milk would work in this recipe? Thanks!
Claudia says
I don’t normally drink milk either, but I did for this batch. I’ve never done a substitution, but I can’t imagine why almond milk wouldn’t work…give it a try!
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Melanie!
