What the Heck?

October 29, 2011 at 1:52 pm by Claudia

Are you kidding me? No, that’s not fairy dust. It’s just begun, my friends. We’re supposed to get 10 – 12 inches. Heavy, wet snow on still green vegetation = bad for the vegetation. I’ve lived in the Midwest and the Northeast most of my life and I’ve never seen snow this early. Oh, and I’m using far more colorful language than I used in the title of this post.

Zinnias rescued from the first frost.

The last of the roses and rose buds. I cut them yesterday afternoon when I heard about the coming snowstorm.

I have to go out soon and shovel. Don’s at work and I want to make sure he can get up the driveway. I’m also going to try to go out periodically and shake some of the snow off the lower branches on the willow and the plants.

I just took the first photo before I started this post and now there is much more snow on the ground.

Crap.

I grew up in Vermont (brrrrr) and lived 25 years in Boston (another brrrr) so I know the feeling of “I’m not ready for this yet!” that you must be experiencing. That’s why I’m in Arizona now … it may be way too hot sometimes but we don’t shovel!

Didn’t you just get rid of the snow a week or so ago???? You didn’t get much of a reprieve did you?

Come on out, I’m not kidding! As Ann mentioned above, we may get really hot, but we don’t have to shovel anything! During the summer you can have all the air conditioning you want, and in our mild winters you mostly don’t even need heat, but it’s cheap!

I’ll keep the porch light on for ya!

    Hugs,
    Meri

Sure not the regular weather pattern – for the whole year. Do not strain your back with wet snow! Take care.

I can’t believe it! I just posted the same thing! I’m worried, my daughter and husband drove to the city for a college women’s forum. Of all days-who expected this! Guess I’ll be shoveling later, with the teens of course! Take care and stay warm. It’ll be in the 50’s next week.

Well, it is a good excuse to have a nice big mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows!
Hope you are back inside, toasty and warm, and the drive cleared for Don.
It snowed about 3″ the other day in my hometown of Amarillo. I never remember snow this early when growing up, but as a child probably would have loved it!

I feel for you! We had flurries here in NC this morning. Now it is sunny, windy and in the 40’s. We are suppose to get to 30 degrees tonight, so this afternoon, I went out to my garden and harvest the rest of the red and yellow bell peppers – they are still green, but that’s ok. We are going to cover our blooming peas and hope they survive the night – no pea pods yet…just blossoms.

What the h-e-double toothpicks would be coming out of my mouth if we had a white Halloween here in Oregon…I’ve probably already said too much because the weather gods are listening… :-) Stay warm.

We’ve got about 6 inches already, and my Lilac tree has lost all its main trunks under the weight of the snow.

E-GADs….OH, NO…. Please say it isn’t so…… I am so glad that last bunch of zinnas was saved, as it will be a long time till spring. I’m guessing we are not going to be too far behind. I had better scurry out and get that last pack of daff buried now. Hang in there, rumor has it, it’s going to be a rough one this year. I have been watching the squirrels going nuts here burying tons more than normal.

Oh say it isn’t so! I live in Ontario and I kind of watch when your area gets snow because it usually comes here soon after. We had frost last night but nothing like this. I guess we should put away the rest of the pots now.

    Hope it gets better,
    Sue

Where I live (Texas) ice exists only in the freezer. I really hope you don’t break your camera when the snow drifts start, because I would LOVE to see more photos!

Hi Claudia, I’m across the Hudson from you in CT and we have about 8″ right now and it’s still coming down. The leaves on the trees are catching and holding the snow (some haven’t even changed into their fall coors yet!) Our beautiful red maple in the front yard cracked in three places already, even though we have been knocking the heavy snow from the limbs. There are lots of trees down. I still haven’t finished picking up from Irene! At least I saved the herbs and my outdoor plants last night. Keep your fingers crossed for the power to stay on!! Linda

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
