Whimsy

January 28, 2022 at 7:17 am by Claudia

For some reason, both Don and I woke up at the same time this morning feeling quite rested. I turned on the light. We got up.

It was 4:15.

I reminded myself that I routinely got up at that time when I was working on the movie and then proceeded to work for 12 hours. I don’t have to work a twelve hour day today, so no big deal!

I actually like waking up early – maybe not quite  this early – but I love to rise when it’s still dark. There’s something lovely and quiet and mysterious about it.

Some guidance for my day today, and every day: a quote that appeared when I opened Upstream  by Mary Oliver to a random page. These words jumped off the page:

You must not ever stop being whimsical.

Mary gets me.

You know how much I love whimsy, how much I believe in whimsy. I cannot imagine my life without it.

On that note: Ben (from the movie) sent me an email yesterday and one of the things he asked was “How is the doll’s house looking? Show me!” So I sneaked into the office where Don was recording and took a quick picture.

Lots of little details yet to go, including dressing the bed – something I’m avoiding. I need some lamps, a couple of plants, more kitchen stuff, a few more books. And I need to address the porch area and add some window boxes.

And more whimsy:

Maeve in her hat. My longtime online friend, Jill (I met her many years ago through miniatures) left a comment on Instagram re this photo. “I see a little attitude in this one. Or is it just me?”

That made me laugh out loud. Jill is right!

Maeve does have some attitude.

Okay. Time to go.

Yes, we’re getting snow tomorrow but only 1-3 inches, which is nothing. We’re relieved.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Here at the coast they are predicting 28-30 inches.
So so thankful we have a plow service. There is no way at our age we could do this. Trader Joe’s this morning was a madhouse.
    Glad we are home now.
Love Mary Oliver, I have most of her books

Oh no! That’s way too much! I sure hope the amount predicted decreases, Linda. Ou local guys are saying this is the kind of storm that is almost impossible to predict. But I’m sure hoping you guys stay safe and warm, Linda.

      Stay safe.

dear Claudia — really like this dollhouse, nice furnishings — altho I’m not a fan of wallpaper, it really works in this house (too many memories re wallpaper from 70s&80s, many Bad, haha). of course, I adore your Irish lass — maybe there is a little attitude w/a touch of sass — easily recognized by me as I have lived it !! hope storm will not be too bad — take wx forecasts w/grain of salt — we have fresh 2 in of snow but still snowing, our temps to go to single digits w/below 0 wind chills Sat — very much too cold. stay safe/healthy

Wallpaper really helps in dollhouses. Often the surfaces are slightly uneven and it helps to disguise a lot of stuff. I used it in my first house and this one and I’m sure I’ll use it in the Beacon Hill.

Now, they’re predicting 2 – 6 inches. But no one really knows because this is a very crazy storm.

      Stay safe, Linda.

Lordy!! 4:15 am is the middle of the night! I admire your attitude.

I hope the forcast is accurate for you. It sounds like it will be a big storm in some areas. I think the media does hype these storms at times. A local meteorologist here said recently we were going to have a snow “event.” What does that even mean? It’s winter in Michigan. It snows frequently. Is an event bigger than a blizzard? I think they like to add a bit of drama sometimes.
    Take care and stay warm.

Well, now they’re saying 2 – 6 inches, but our local service which is terrific says it’s extremely hard to predict this one. Right now we have snow showers (not part of the storm) but the real snow fall starts tonight.

      Stay safe, Marilyn.

On the national news the other day one of the newscasters said “Chicago is expecting up to 3 inches of snow with temperatures falling to the teens”. Why is that news? It is winter and it is Chicago. If it was Orlando it would be news. Sounds like Boston will be a real mess. But every time I watch the news, from last night thru noon today, the forecast has changed for the various cities in its path. Your guys sound like they are right, it sounds like it is a hard storm to predict.

Hope the lower amounts first predicted stay true for you, and your power stays on throughout. I’m sure we will be hearing about it most of the weekend on the news. Know we are all thinking of you and Don. Take care.

Everything seems to be BREAKING NEWS at this point. It makes me crazy.

The coast is really going to get slammed. We’re going to get a few inches.

We are going to have to deal with wind and wind chills, however. And you know I don’t like wind!

      Stay safe, Chris.

I still need my sleep, though maybe not quite as much as I used to. Seven hours was absolutely the minimum and now I’m fine with six.

      Stay safe, Brenda.

I love Mary Oliver and always have one of her books here by me. The dollhouse looks wonderful. Then there’s Maeve in her winter hat staring straight into my eyes! Love her too!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cross section of the cottage — at least not since it has been close to done. (I know — more to come, but still, looking very good). It’s fabulous, Claudia. I worry, though, about people eating on the sofa or the pretty chair. But I don’t know where you’d put a table. The kitchen hutch reminds me of our hutch at the lake and I adore the stove! And a studio!

    Gotta love the attitude!

We never eat at our table. We eat dinner on trays and that’s what the owner of the cottage will do, too.

      Thanks so much!

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Maeve looks like she could be a handful…watch out there. I really hope you don’t get 6 inches…not with a broken snow blower…no!

I agree about the whimsy….anything that makes me smile, or is quirky. I need that as much as I need water…basic necessity.

Stay warm…fingers crossed for tomorrow that you are on the lower end of snowfall! ;)

I think it will be more likely 3 inches or less, which is good news.

The coast, however, is really going to get slammed. Praying for them.

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
