Wild Roses & Humidity

June 3, 2023 at 8:32 am by Claudia

We had exactly 2 minutes of light rain yesterday.

That’s it.

Storms all around us, Don drove through a whopper about 20 miles north of us. Here? Not enough to make a difference. But the temperature has dropped and I’m very grateful. It’s a rather cloudy day today. I may take advantage of the cooler temperatures and do some much needed garden clean up.

Two beauties.

I spend a couple of hours (much longer than usual) changing out Nina’s body. She was on a taller body, which I didn’t mind. Her neck joint, however, stabilized her but didn’t allow for head tilts, etc. I tried to remove that neck joint so I could keep using the body but it was glued on. For some reason, the process was harder than usual and I made little errors and had to start over again. I do have the excuse of incredible heat and humidity and you know I don’t function well in that kind of weather. After I got her reassembled, the head still seemed too loose. After taking it apart about 4 times, I finally hit on the idea of removing the neck joint and swapping it out with the only other neck joint I had on hand. It worked. The other neck joint was, I don’t know – a bit wider? Not sure.

Then we went out on the porch while we waited for the thunderstorms to roll in – they didn’t – but it was nice and breezy.

The wild roses are in bloom all over the property. These are up in the woods.

Don had to emcee a concert last night – it’s part of a free summer series in a town north of us. He booked the musicians, etc. It had to move to a church, rather than its normal outdoor venue, because of the threat of thunderstorms.

I didn’t know what to do with myself! Couldn’t watch anything that we are watching together. Most of Jeopardy was preempted by Biden’s speech. It was hot and humid, so I just sat here with the fan trained on me. And then I took a bath, something I normally don’t do because we go to bed early. It was lovely.

When I was going to grad school in Philadelphia, which is notoriously hot and humid in the summer, I shared an apartment with a fellow classmate during my second year. She went home for the summer and I stayed in town doing my usual temp work to help pay the bills. We had no air conditioning, and after work I walked the 20+ blocks back to my apartment, took a cool shower since I was dripping from the humidity, and sat on my bed in my underwear with three fans set on high speed. One at my right, one at my left, and one facing me. It was the only relief available. I can still see myself on that bed – in fact I mentioned it to Don again last night (he’s heard this story more than a few times.) A very strong memory from long ago,

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday,

sorry you missed out on the rain. i know how that feels … drove in hard rain on the way home from nebraska near the next town over (from some family members’ home, about fifteen minutes from home); they received 1.42 inches of rain. des moines? 0.02. hope we all get some rain soon!

    the roses look beautiful!

and i bet don had fun and did a great job emceeing the concert. i hope he played it, too!

very hot here … reached 90 a couple times and that’s the temperature forecast for today, tomorrow and monday. too much and too soon … i don’t function or feel well in higher heat (45 to 65 is my best) or humidity so am already ready for fall’s cooler weather. :o

happy saturday to everyone. may you spend it as you like and be happy!

      No, he didn’t play.

I don’t do well in high heat and especially in high humidity. Today is much cooler, thank goodness!

      Stay safe, Kathy.

We are heading into warmer weather, that is to say from highs of mid-60’s to highs of low 70’s this weekend, then high 60’s this week. I couldn’t live in an area with extremes between hot and cold, and I definitely don’t tolerate high humidity. Hope your backs are better and that you are able to get the a/c unit installed this week.

My late husband did a lot of DJ and emcee work, starting as a hobby of sorts, then became a second, more fun, job. His primary job was IT security for large corporations. He enjoyed the job mainly for the people he worked with, but the on hour plus commute each way was definitely exhausting. He helped organize and then emcee’d a fund-raiser musical program to help save music in our city’s schools. A dozen or so years later, there’s still music education in the public schools here..

I definitely don’t tolerate high humidity either, but we have to live near NYC. So here we are.

Good for your husband, who was clearly a lovely and talented man, Wendy.

      Stay safe.

dear Claudia/Don — glad you all survived the “heat wave” — 90s still here — hate it !!! I grew up with no fans, no a/c — one very hot summer we got an electric fan — very small and the only person enjoying the cool air was the one directly in front of it — Myma had told me “Don’t touch it Lindy” — well, that was like an invitation to do so — it had buttons/knobs on the base and of course, Lindy moved some of them — and magically, the fan began turning , spreading a cool breeze in all directions — I quickly turned it off but did not reset it. Next time, Myma turned it on, everyone got some benefit — BUT did she forget her warning to me??? no, I was in BIG trouble — of course, I could get into trouble w/o even trying. your fan story brought back memories. stay safe

We’re in the same boat — no rain, so you have it over us. A little bit ago I looked up the weather and on the ten-day there isn’t a single raindrop icon on the schedule — and warm temps, though in the low 80s instead of high 80s or 90s. Small favors. I have zero motivation. Over the past couple of days I’ve baked cookies and cherry bars for the concert and made fruit skewers and “Margarita’ skewers (cherry tomatoes, mozz., basil) and now just the concert. Rick’s doing most of the set up, which is good because it’s too darned hot to do much setting up for this girl! I just took a nap (NEVER do that in the day) and reading a little of the latest and last Elly G. I look at the pile of yard sale stuff in the family room and should be pricing it and can’t bear the thought of the mental energy to do it. Summer heat.

Your two fans sound like a great idea! Hang in!

I am taking naps almost every day now and I never used to do that. That’s a change I’ve noticed.

Was the concert last night, Jeanie?

Hi Claudia — yes, the concert was last night and it was terrific. Somehow we fit about 30 people into Rick’s living room and while the heat was close, it wasn’t unbearable. Outdoors, after for the reception, it was perfect. People really seemed to enjoy it and Onur was thrilled with the opportunity to perform some classical, jazz and some of his own compositions. We lucked out on the weather — just a tad cooler than the day before. Whew! Recuperating today. Tomorrow a friend is coming over to watch the Coronation so picking up my house is the first priority. I think Rick can get his under control pretty well!

We didn’t get rain either but thankfully it has cooled down a little. Nina and Mei are definitely beauties. Could they get any cuter? I don’t think so. Isn’t it fun “playing dolls”? Enjoy your Sunday. Hugs, Elaine

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
