Zinnias

August 26, 2014 at 7:52 am by Claudia

saturday-zinnia with aphid

Don has decided that zinnias are his favorite flower. He loves to wander over to the Chicken Wire Fence Garden to see the new blooms. He’s fascinated by all the different colors and designs. He asks me a lot of questions about them.

tuesday zinnia 1

The other day, I found him researching them online.

He knows a lot about them now. More than me.

tuesday zinnia 2

Truth be told, zinnias fascinate me. The endless variety, the never knowing what color or shape is going to come out of the ground. The tall sturdiness of them. This one, with its candy cane petals, took me completely by surprise.

tuesday zinnia 3

They are immensely cheery flowers. And here in the Northeast they bloom later in the summer, which makes for a welcome sight in an otherwise tired garden.

I can hear the Canada Geese honking as they fly over the house. Another sign of Fall. Leaves are on the ground. The light is more golden.

Hold off a bit will you? I’m not ready for Fall. Morning glories are blooming, roses are blooming, zinnias are opening daily. The temps today are going to be just shy of 90 degrees. We’re still in the midst of summer, thank you very much.

I’m off to Manhattan today. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

Zinnias are my favorite flower, too! Growing up in a military family, we were always moving. My mother always planted zinnias alongside one side of our homes…I’ve always loved them!

Yes…zinnias are very happy flowers. My mom used to plant zinnia seeds along the south side of the house when I was growing up. When the seedlings got bigger…she transplanted them all over the yard! It was quite the beautiful sight! Hope you enjoy your day in NYC! ;)

I love Zinnias too! I love to cut them to bring indoors because they bloom again so quickly. They are such cheerful flowers and yours are lovely!

I won a ‘Reserve Champion’ ribbon at the 4H fair when I was 10 years old with a bright pink Zinnia displayed in an aluminum foil covered Coke bottle…I’ve been in love ever since!

Love when you post about Don. Your zinnias are prettier than mine. Think you have more sun.

I agree! As much as I love Fall [definitely my favorite season] I’m still not ready. To me, it feels like Summer has only been around for a few weeks – nowhere near a seasons-worth of it yet. But Nature will out. Yesterday I was stopped at a red light in the village, in a residential area with huge old trees, and saw a mini-shower of small yellow leaves across the street. Hard not to like seeing that. Have fun in New York – will you take the train in?

Zinnia is my husbands favorite flower too. It reminds him of his grandmothers garden. Mine are hollyhocks. No memories I just love the tall spikes of flowers. Have both planted in my flower beds and I love that they reseed themselves. Also, I am sooooo looking forward to fall. We don’t see Canadian geese until November.(I have to be outside to hear the honking.) When we moved here, the geese would land in the pastures of the horse farms near us. Housing tracks have taken over everything except a small area where our neighbors and us have 2 1/2 acre parcels. ( Lovely to be on our land but crime has also moved in with the tract homes.) We had an extremely dry winter, warm spring, and hot summer. Bring on cold temps and an el nino winter!! That’s life in so. Ca.. Patty Mc

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
