Book Review: Hush Hush by Laura Lippman

March 16, 2015 at 9:52 am by Claudia

Unknown

Today I am reviewing Hush Hush by Laura Lippman for TLC Book Tours. As always, I am provided with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

About the book (from the publisher): On a searing August day, Melisandre Harris Dawes committed the unthinkable: she left her two-month-old daughter locked in a car while she sat nearby on the shores of the Patapsco River. Melisandre was found not guilty by reason of criminal insanity, although there was much skepticism about her mental state. Freed, she left the country, her husband, and her two surviving children, determined to start over.

But now, Melisandre has returned to Baltimore to meet with her estranged teenage daughters and film the reunion for a documentary. The problem is, she relinquished custody and her ex isn’t sure he approves.

Now that she’s a mother herself – short on time and patience – Tess Monaghan wants nothing to do with a woman crazy enough to have killed her own child. But her mentor and close friend Tyner Gray, Melisandre’s lawyer, has asked Tess and her new partner, retired Baltimore PD homicide detective Sandy Sanchez, to assess Melisandre’s security needs.

Tess has always felt that her curiosity about others is her greatest strength. Yet the imperious Melisandre is someone she cannot begin to understand, much less empathize with. A decade ago, a judge ruled that Melisandre was beyond rational thought. But was she? Tess tries to keep her distance from her mercurial yet confident client. This strategy gets tricky after Melisandre becomes a prime suspect in a murder.

And as her doubts about Melisandre grow, Tess realizes that she’s under scrutiny as well, followed by a judgmental stalker with an ax to grind . . .

My review: If you ever glance at my sidebar, you’ve seen the widgets where I share what I’m currently reading and what I’ve just finished reading. Right now, and for the past week, both books have been by Lippman as I’ve gone back to read the entire Tess Monaghan series in order. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing two other mysteries by Lippman for this blog:  After I’m Gone, a stand-alone novel featuring Sandy Sanchez, who is now a part of the Tess Monaghan series, and Baltimore Blues, the first novel in the Tess Monaghan series.

I’m a fan.

Hush Hush, the newest novel in the Tess Monaghan series, does not disappoint. Lippman is a gifted writer who knows how to spin a plot that is complicated and layered. There are always, and I mean always, twists and turns that I as a reader did not expect. Can I tell you how much I love that? This time, we are introduced to Melisandre who has committed the unthinkable crime, one that is almost impossible to forgive. She is unpredictable, imperious, and quite possibly, untrustworthy. Her motives are questionable. At the same time, Tess herself is dealing with a stalker.

You know I won’t divulge more of the plot. As always, I want you to be completely surprised, just as I was.

Lippman is particularly gifted at creating complex characters (one of which is the city of Baltimore.) Over the course of the series she has created a cast of characters – some family, some  friends, some colleagues – who are richly detailed. All of them grow and change throughout the series. The result is the completely realized and multi-layered world in which Tess lives and works and plays. We get to know everyone over the course of the novels, so, like all the best mystery series, we feel as if we belong there, too. We want to hang out with everyone.

In this mystery, as in all Lippman’s books, there is a strong element of humor. Tess’s observations alone are funny in a wonderfully dry way, and the supporting cast of characters often include the quirky and off-beat.

Lippman is, quite simply, a wonderful writer. I’m hooked. After reading the first and most recent books in the series, I’m now on number 4. I can’t put them down. When I do, it’s only long enough to grab the next book in the series.

I recommend them highly.

On an entirely personal note, one of Lippman’s favorite singers is the late Nancy LaMott; she mentions her in her books. I’ve spoken of my love for LaMott, who died too young and had the voice of an angel, many times on this blog. I was surprised and delighted when I saw a reference to her in one of Lippman’s books.

I have a feeling Lippman is a kindred spirit.

Laura Lippman

The publisher has created a special page called Tess is Back. It’s interactive and a lot of fun. You can learn more about the characters, as well as win prizes.

And, one of you will win a copy of Hush Hush. Just leave a comment on this post. Please remember: it has to be on this post. I’ll pick a winner on Thursday evening.

Happy Monday.

Hand Quilting & Some Pie (Pi)

March 15, 2015 at 9:04 am by Claudia

3-15 pi day

Evidence of yesterday’s Pi Day celebration here at the cottage.

Apple pie for breakfast.

It rained most of the day yesterday and then turned very foggy last night. Since Don was out doing a gig, I was a wee bit nervous about his return home, but he made it home safely. All is well.

Today looks to be gray and windy. I saw the sun for brief moment, but it has disappeared. I will repeat to myself, “That’s okay. Gray is okay, because the snow is melting!”

3-15 quilting 2

After gazing across the room at the quilt ensconced in its protective cover every day for about a month and a half and doing nothing, I finally took it out of its bag and gathered my hand quilting tools together. I switched out the lamp on my side table (not bright enough) and spent about three hours hand quilting in the late afternoon. As always when I start hand quilting after a long break, the index finger on my left hand has to build up a callus to withstand the prick of the quilting needle. That callus isn’t quite there yet, so my finger is a bit sore today.

This quilt has very large squares, so when I take a look at it and think to myself, “I’ll do a square a day!” I quickly realize that my expectations need to be adjusted. I’m quilting rather densely and there’s simply no way I can do a whole square unless I’m willing to forgo everything else I have to do in the course of the day. A good lesson in staying in the moment. I’ll just do what I can do that day.

And of course, Dame Scout was constantly demanding something or other. She needed to go out. She wanted her dinner. She wanted me to start cooking my dinner so she could watch. She had to go out again. She has very clear ideas about the proper order of her day. My job, apparently, is to facilitate it for her.

Doesn’t she realize Mom is quilting? That the quilt is big and awkward and that Mom has to get up and rearrange everything before she can attend to her Dameship’s needs?

Short answer: She doesn’t care.

I do love hand quilting. It’s the only way I quilt. I’ve quilted everything – from a queen-sized quilt to a mini quilt – that way. It takes a lot of time, yes, but it’s very satisfying. And meditative. Someday I may send one out to be quilted because it can be hard on your hands and wrists, but for now, I’m doing it my way.

I realized after I asked the question about whether I should showcase the egg cups again this year that the way I phrased it sort of prohibited anyone from saying “No more egg cups!” in the comments. Silly. Ah well. It does seem, however, that most of you would like to see them again or for the first time, so I will highlight them sometime before Easter.

It’s the Ides of March.

Happy Sunday.

To Egg Cup or Not to Egg Cup

March 14, 2015 at 9:46 am by Claudia

3-14 studio

I’m never quite sure when Easter is, but I made sure to check the calendar yesterday and it’s not all that far off, is it?

Which brings me to egg cups, specifically, my collection of egg cups. For the past few years, I’ve highlighted the collection right around Easter. Many of you may be very familiar with it by now, which brings me to my question of the day. Should I share them again this year? Or is it a case of ‘been there, done that?’

I have a lot of them and I love them, but don’t let that influence you!

Happy Pi day on this March 14th! Coincidentally, we happen to have some apple pie in the house. So it stands to reason that said pie should be consumed today, don’t you think? We will sacrifice for Pi day.

It’s a rainy day here in the Hudson Valley. Go ahead rain, melt the snow! We have quite a bit of snow still on the ground but it’s definitely melting. We watch as the chairs on the funky patio start to show more of themselves. Oh, there’s the seat! I see some legs! Look, I see one of the pavers beneath the chair!

These are the kind of things that make us happy. The birdbath thawed. I hear the constant drip of running water from the gutters as the ice melts. There are even patches of grass emerging. It will take a while, as we had over three feet of snow on the ground, but it’s definitely happening.

The other day we heard birds singing.

Be still my heart.

I don’t kid myself about when I can get outside and do some garden clean up. That will be a few weeks away, at the very least. But it’s coming. It’s coming!

Don’t forget to answer my question of the day in the comment section.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
