pinkclouds

Though I’m well and truly sick of winter, I must admit the beauty of bare tree branches against a sky filled with puffy pink clouds is breathtaking. It’s all in the timing, isn’t it? I just happened to be letting Scout out as the clouds turned pink and the sun started setting.

Speaking of Scout, we had a rather tough night last night. Shortly before bedtime, I noticed she was limping. I assumed it was her arthritis. She seemed to be in some pain. I finally realized, just as I was about to make my way upstairs to bed, that she’d torn a nail. It was still attached, but barely. Whenever I touched it, she started trembling. I called the vet’s – they always have a doctor on call – and he told me to wrap it (I already had) and that it would wait until this morning. Poor baby. It hurts her. I ended up sleeping downstairs on the sofa so I could keep an eye on her.

Not too comfortable. So I’m a wee bit sleep deprived.

Don doesn’t arrive home until late tonight – past my usual bedtime, in fact – after having been in California for nine weeks. He’s excited to be coming back home and we’re excited to have him here once again. Life in the theater sometimes requires long periods away from home. I’ll be gone for five weeks in April and May. And who knows what other jobs lie in store for him? We are truly happy being in each other’s company, so separations are never easy.

Thank you, thank you for all the lovely comments you left on my Five Years of Blogging post. They warmed my heart. If you didn’t happen to see it, you can click on the link or simply scroll down one post. I’m giving away an Obsession Scarf to one lucky commenter. I think I’ll keep the comments open until Friday night. Then I’ll choose the winner. Good luck!

This will be rather short as I have to call the Vet’s and, perhaps, cancel another appointment. I want my girl feeling tip top for her father’s homecoming!

It may officially be a holiday, but it’s a full Monday for me!

Happy Monday.

Five Years of Blogging

February 17, 2013 at 9:13 am by Claudia

heartsinmccoy

On February 17, 2008, at 5:45 pm, I published the first post on this blog – a blog that had the bare minimum in design. There weren’t a lot of options available in those days on Blogger. And I didn’t know what the heck I was doing.

Here’s the text of that first post:

Welcome to my blog, Mockingbird Hill Cottage! I have been reading and commenting on various blogs for a long time and now I have finally started my own. Believe me, I will be learning as I go. I’m looking forward to meeting new friends and sharing my thoughts, projects and experiences with you. Mockingbird Hill Cottage is so named because my favorite book of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird and my maiden name is Hill. It is also a salute to a mockingbird that serenaded us every night with the most beautiful music when we lived in California. I hope your day is a happy one.

That’s it. I didn’t know how to insert a photo within the post. I posted a photo of the cottage separately, about a half hour later. I had one comment, from dear Rachel of A Romantic Porch. As you all know, starting and building a blog takes time. There were many, many times that I had no comments on a post. I just kept going. No one in my private life knew about the blog except my husband. (There are still many people in my professional life that have no idea I write a blog!) Eventually, I told my sister. Then a few friends. I didn’t tell my parents for at least a year. I was shy about it, I guess.

The other day, I was thinking about blogging and what drew me to it. Of course, there are the obvious things: writing, photography, being able to journal in a new medium, sharing my story.

But what really smacked me upside the head was this realization:

solitary

True. I have always been that way. I work in a very verbal profession that is full of all sorts of personalities. I taught for many years. And at the end of the day, or the play, or the semester, I would retreat to my apartment or house and be perfectly happy being with myself. And now, Don, of course. I can spend great amounts of time alone.

But I like to talk. Always have. I used to get in trouble for talking too much in elementary school.

So what does a person like that do? Talk on the phone? Well, sometimes, but I worked in Customer Service for many years before I went to grad school and the phone long ago lost its appeal for me.

A person like that writes. And in this digital age, she writes a blog. And through that blog, she can be chatty and share her thoughts and creations and ups and downs with friends from all over the world.

And her world can change.

Indeed, my world has changed since I started blogging five years ago. It’s hard to quantify just how much blogging means to me. Suffice it to say, I have loved every minute of this blogging adventure. I have learned a great deal, more than I thought this non-technical head of mine could ever take in. I have met the most wonderful people, some of whom have been with me from the beginning. Others have come and gone, just as in life.

This journal of mine has enabled me to hone my writing skills and my photography skills. It has given me a platform of sorts in which to share whatever silly, serious, whimsical, joyful, everyday, heartbreaking or heartfelt thoughts I have on any given day.

But what makes it powerful beyond words is you. So I say, quite simply, thank you.

And because it’s my fifth anniversary of blogging, I have a little giveaway planned to commemorate the occasion.

scarfgiveaway

Each of you who leaves a comment will be entered in a little Obsession Scarf Giveaway. The winner will win an Obsession Scarf crocheted in one of these colors (in my favorite silk and bamboo yarn.) Your choice. There’s the pastel blue you’ve seen before, the apple green and a more royal blue that I’ve not used before.  It will be crocheted just for you.

So leave a comment. If you’ve already purchased a scarf in the past, enter anyway. You can give it as a gift. (You notice I don’t say ‘gift it.’ That turn of phrase, unfortunately, seems to be increasingly popular. However, the last time I looked, gift was a noun.)

There I go again.

I haven’t been able to visit many blogs this week. The fact is, I’ve been feeling under the weather with terrible sinus problems. I kept going through all the painting and things that needed to be done around here, but I feel just plain yucky. And I’ve sort of crashed. I’ve been visiting, just not commenting. Hopefully, I will be feeling much better soon.

In closing, I send my love and thanks to all of you. You have enriched my life beyond measure.

Happy Sunday,

A Favorite Thing #24

February 15, 2013 at 8:00 pm by Claudia

afavoritething

Hello, dear friends! It’s week number twenty four of A Favorite Thing. My goodness – that would be 6 months, would it not? How time flies when you’re having fun!

We’ve had a few days of 40+ degree temps. Most, not all, of last Friday’s huge snowfall has melted. But never fear, Mother Nature has decided to give us some more snow tonight (1-3 inches) and temps in the twenties for the weekend. I think she doesn’t want us to get too complacent. My husband, currently basking in the warmth of Southern California, will be in for a rude awakening when he disembarks from his plane on Monday night.

Let’s look at some highlights from last week:

Tina from An Unconventional Life shared her recipe for Marmalade. Oh my – it sure looks tasty! Now I’m craving some. Thanks, Tina!

Sharon of Elizabeth & Co., shared her tutorial for making this gorgeous Ruffled Sheet Music Wreath. And I mean gorgeous! I just may have to try this, Sharon. Thank you.

Vintage-Cornell-Watch

And County Line Road – a true collector – shared this beautiful vintage Cornell watch that she found at a flea market. A new band, a little work and it’s working beautifully. Isn’t it beautiful? Just my style!

I’ve been busy painting and redoing our bedroom and one of the photos of my dresser brought to mind my favorite thing for this week. And, as always, there’s a story behind it.

teachest1

This is one of my most precious possessions. It was my great grandparents’ tea chest. It’s handmade and quite beautiful. From the time I was a young girl, I used to stare at it when I visited my grandmother. It had a home on her corner what-not shelf. It wasn’t until years later, when I inherited it, that I fully realized what was in it.

teachest2

This is what it looks like when opened. Those little knobs are sea shells. Obviously at one time it held tea, but now it holds a different type of treasure. There’s a mother of pearl zither pick. A miniature ax carved from wood. There are pennies. And shells. A lock.

teachest3

And there a cards and notes and lists. A copy of my great grandfather’s will. A note from my mother to my grandmother apologizing for doing something wrong. A tintype of my great grandfather with the words “Do You Remember Me?” on it’s cardboard frame. My grandmother’s certificate qualifying her for entrance to her high school. My great-aunt Rhoda’s grades.

For me, the saddest things by far are these cards:

teachests5

There were 5 children in my grandmother’s family. As I’ve mentioned, they lived on a farm in Orillia, Ontario. The children were Bill, Maggie, Carrie (my grandmother), Ruth and Rhoda. Rhoda was the youngest and she was the apple of my grandmother’s eye. I have many of her letters to my grandmother, sent while my grandmother was attending nursing school in Barrie, Ontario. You can really get a sense of her lively, enchanting personality by reading them. Maggie, who was older, was quiet and retiring, most likely because she had a hunchback, and in those days not enough was understood about that kind of thing. The terrible flu epidemic that started in 1918 hit the family very hard. The children took sick. My grandmother came home from nursing school to help. She almost died. These cards show the terrible cost of that epidemic. Rhoda died at the age of 15 on February 14, 1920. Exactly 10 days later, Maggie died at the age of 29.

My grandmother never got over it. Meredith has Rhoda’s doll. I have Rhoda’s copy of Alice in Wonderland, her letters to my grandmother and this, also in the tea chest:

teachest4

A lock of her hair.

I’ve written about this chest before, but every time I speak or write of it, I am consumed by sadness. Now you see why I treasure this tea chest. Grandma never spoke about what was in it. I am honored to be the keeper of these memories and will pass it on to future generations.

Now, my friends, it’s your turn.

You can link up anytime from this evening through Sunday. Make sure you enter the URL of your post. If you’re unsure how to do that, just click on your post title after you’ve published it and copy the information in your browser address window. Come back here, paste the URL into your link entry and there you go! If you have any problems, drop me an email and I’ll help you out. Please link back to this blog on your post. That way, those that read your post and are interested in reading more can do so.

One of my concerns about link parties is that the very reason for them has somewhat gone by the wayside. They’ve become so big and there are so many of them that many bloggers don’t take the time to visit any of the other participants. Link parties are a way to meet new bloggers and share with each other and the only way to do that is to visit each other. So, please, take some time to visit everyone over the next few days. No rush. Stop by, introduce yourself, and leave a comment. It’s the neighborly thing to do. It’s also nice if you leave a comment here, as well.

Enjoy!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
