What are you Reading??

July 14, 2012 at 8:15 am by Claudia

Reading a book = almost the best thing ever.

I’ve been an avid reader since childhood. Nothing seemed as exciting to me as cracking open a new-to-me book from the bookmobile (which stopped at my elementary school parking lot every Thursday.) Or, be still my heart, a pile of Scholastic Books that were ordered just for me through my school. My very own books!

I have a regular feature on my sidebar that shows what I’m currently reading and what I’ve just finished reading, because I think you might like to know about that. I love to hear what others are reading; it tells me a lot about that person and, bonus, I just might find something I haven’t heard about and would love to try for myself.

Reading is always an escape for me, unless it is the kind of reading you have to do for classes and homework which is not an escape. At this moment in my life, I really need an escape, so I grabbed some Daniel Silva thriller/espionage books from my local library. That magazine you see under the book is called Secondhand Treasures – all about collecting and vintage and flea markets – and is one of those special editions that cost too much money. What was I thinking? Escape.

So tell me on this Saturday: What are you reading?

Too Early on a Friday Morning

July 13, 2012 at 7:48 am by Claudia

5:30 am again?

Even my hyper little Scoutie is still sleeping. She has more sense than me.

I wish I could get, say, five good night’s sleep in a row. I get to sleep just fine. I just wake up too darned early. And then I start worrying about Riley; does he need to go outside, has he made a mess?

And then I start worrying about all sorts of other things. So I get up.

My boy was doing better this week. He was able to get up by himself off and on. You understand that when I say ‘better’ I mean tiny little improvements, don’t you? Yesterday morning, his barking woke us up. He’d made a bit of a mess (not his fault) and was thirsty and had been trying to get up. That struggle to get up seems to exhaust his muscles and for the next day or two, he can barely stay standing.

Right now he’s perched on some beach towels we found for sale at Target. I’ve been having to wash his towels every day, which uses a lot of our well water in this very, very dry stretch of weather, so I figured we could use some reinforcements if only to slow up the amount of washing that needs to be done. $5 each. And we bought all of them.

Oh, this is so hard, my friends. He’s still eating and drinking and occasionally joining in with Scout as she barks. But he struggles. And each time I start to entertain the thought of making the final decision, he perks up a little and I can’t do it.

How do I find a job when he needs me? I won’t make any kind of decision based on that. I could never live with myself. He’s my baby and I need to take care of him until I know it’s time. And then, I’ll help him as he crosses over.

I know so many of you have struggled and are struggling with the same thing.

Happy Friday.

Volunteers Welcome

July 12, 2012 at 9:28 am by Claudia

Could these little volunteer impatiens be any more charming? They have flourished in the shade provided by the little wooden bench.

But they’re popping up in other little nooks and crannies, as well.

It’s as if Mother Earth has decided a delightful surprise is in order. (And believe me, I can use a delightful surprise.)

Every time I look out the kitchen door (which is often since it leads to the dog corral) I get to feast my eyes on these little pretties.

Oh lord, it’s been so HOT here. Endless blazing sun. Everywhere we go, we see huge patches of brown grass, the rivers are really low – we desperately need some rain. Late yesterday afternoon, while the sun was still shining, there was one of those impromptu summer rains. It didn’t last all that long, but any moisture is welcome at this point.

Thanks for all the responses to my “Meticulous Housekeeper” post. For me, it’s the dusting that I neglect. I swiffer and vacuum every day, the kitchen is always picked up, especially since the kitchen and the living room are really one big space. But dusting? I avoid it until I have to. And I’m allergic to house dust, so what’s preferable? Leaving the house dust alone or stirring it up with a duster? Hmmm.

Yesterday I was scheduled for two posts: a TLC book review and a post about beautiful Connecticut in conjunction with BlogHer and Connecticut Tourism. Make sure you visit both of these posts. I’m giving away a copy of the book I reviewed. And if you leave a comment on the Connecticut Tourism post, you win a chance to win $1000 to help plan your trip to that lovely state!

Have a lovely Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
