Early Morning Thoughts

January 16, 2009 at 11:02 am by Claudia

Sometimes I wake up very early, like I did today. At 5:30 am, I decided to get up and watch the sun rise from the window of my apartment while I drank coffee and caught up with some blogs. There is something about the quiet morning hours that is so peaceful. I am not one of those lucky people who wake up raring to go, bright-eyed and talking a blue streak. Anyone who knows me knows that I need my coffee and some quiet time before I become something close to human. Since I am staying in an apartment building on a rather busy street, and not in my little cottage, I am always aware of my effect on others in the building. I walk quietly, keep the television volume down, wait to exercise until a decent hour, and try to close doors quietly. My downstairs neighbors are married – 2 actors who are in the same play. I tend to hear their footsteps, but generally, they are very quiet.

It has been two weeks since I came to San Diego. I start teaching next Tuesday and my schedule will get busier. That’s a good thing. My husband is dealing with the frigid temperatures that are enveloping so much of the country. Out here it has been much warmer than usual. Such a contrast!

I am settling in. The apartment is much more ‘me’ than it was when I first arrived. I can take pleasure in my surroundings and that is so important to me. It always has been, since I was a young girl. I feel that if I create an environment that is warm and enveloping, I can function more efficiently. I can relax and let go. I know all my blogging friends feel the same way.

This sweet coffee mug helps me wake up. I got it at Target – so much better than a plain cup, isn’t it? Flowers on anything – I love them!

Have a great Friday!

Better

January 13, 2009 at 10:12 pm by Claudia

I’m feeling better today, due, in no small part, to your lovely, supportive comments. Thank you.

I slept well, and took care of some business today. I drove to campus and did some of the necessary paperwork for employment, taxes and payroll. Then I went to Best Buy and bought a printer. My intention all along was to buy a compact printer that is intended for business travelers. I thought that made sense. However, it was more expensive; and it occurred to me this morning that normally I don’t need a printer when I travel on business. I usually hand write my notes for actors. This trip is not normal as it involves teaching and being away for 6 months. I do need a printer here. So I thought I should buy a nice printer/scanner/copier and then ship it back home in July. We need a better printer at home and this will do the trick. Plus, it has wireless. Ironically, it is much less expensive than the compact printer I was considering and it does more. Add to that the fact that I had two coupons totaling $30.00 off and it was a no-brainer. It certainly is much quieter than our printer at home!

Tomorrow will be a day of rehearsals and note-taking. The show I am working on is getting close to moving into the theater. Next week, classes begin. So I am slowly getting busier and that is a good thing.

The photo above comes from Mockingbird Hill Cottage. I took it because I loved the contrast of pine floor and the tiger oak of the sideboard. If you look in the upper left hand corner you’ll see the aqua version of the McCoy bulb dish.

More later.

Feeling Blue

January 12, 2009 at 4:39 pm by Claudia

I’m feeling blue today. I’m tired, I didn’t sleep well, the Santa Ana winds occurring here always leave me unsettled, I’m lonely for my loved ones.

What I wouldn’t give to be petting my dogs, cuddling with my husband, sitting in Mockingbird Hill Cottage. This is just one of those days where I want to cry. The excitement of decorating my little apartment has worn off, the day seems to go on forever with nothing to do and nothing seems to interest me. I am homesick. I miss my little cottage, the ticking of the clock, the sound of the dogs’ nails clicking on the wood floors, the sun streaming through our windows, the sound of my husband’s guitar, I miss all of it – even the irritating stuff.

It has only been a little over a week, but it sure seems like longer. I know that this time next week when I am teaching and coaching 2 shows, time will move more quickly. I will have less time to feel blue. In the meantime, I might as well own up to it. I’m blue.

I’m grateful for this blog and for opportunity to express how I feel from day to day. And for all of you who leave such lovely comments. Tomorrow will be better.

P.S. Not helping in my blue mood, I just found out that Country Home is ceasing publication. That makes 3: Home Companion, Cottage Living, and Country Home. Don’t you think that we need these publications now more than ever? I do.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
