Day Two Hundred Seventy-Two

December 10, 2020 at 10:09 am by Claudia

It’s a bit warmer today and sunny. Maybe I’ll finally  hang the lights on the porch. I’ve managed to avoid it for three days and it’s the easiest decorating I do for the holidays. Go figure.

I can’t believe that Christmas Eve is two weeks from today – which means that 2020 ends in a little over 3 weeks. Bye Bye, 2020. You’ve been a nightmare for so many; so much loss and so much of it avoidable. We’ve been in our version of lockdown since March, so the majority of the year has been spent away from family and friends, away from the little things that I’ll never take for granted again. I’m happy to do it, as are all of you. We wear masks. We stay home. We protect others and ourselves. Top that off with the increasing insanity that is coming out of the White House. I will be so happy to say goodbye to this year. I know our worries about the coronavirus won’t magically disappear, as we have to be more careful than ever and it looks like vaccinations will be spread out over months.

Anyway, I’m not saying anything you don’t already know. I’ve had some tough years in my life – how can you get to age 68 without having had tough times? But I’ve never wanted a year to end as much as I do this one. That being said, we count our blessings every day here at Mockingbird Hill Cottage and we will continue to do so.

Don’s friend mentioned that we might get some significant snow next week, so I checked the forecast and it looks like we will get 3 – 5 inches next Wednesday. Both Don and I are excited about that because the first snowfall is always wondrous. It’s when we hit February that we’re over it. I don’t think it will last through Christmas because the temps will be above freezing.

The kit table is now in Hummingbird Cottage. After thinking way too much about it, I painted the chairs white. Since I plan on changing them out eventually (I don’t really like them) white will do for the moment. Taking a photo of the far end of the kitchen is always difficult, it’s like taking a picture in a tunnel. But this gives you an idea. I decided to stain it as I wanted more wood tones in the kitchen. I haven’t added anything to the table yet. That will come.

Okay. Have to go.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Day Two Hundred Seventy-One

December 9, 2020 at 10:07 am by Claudia

The Lake House has been decked out for Christmas. A few wreaths and a fresh coating of snow is all that’s needed.

This involved standing on the ottoman and carefully turning the house around – it’s big and quite heavy – then lifting it very gently so as not to disturb the furnishings while tucking the ‘snow’ under the house. Then the ubiquitous tacky wax to attach the wreaths. Somehow, this sweet house seems made for Christmas.

My friend Helga has corrected me on one thing – she doesn’t have a black Putz sheep yet, but she’s on the lookout. I’m going to give you the link to her IG account. Helga and I share a love of dollhouses and putz sheep and miniatures and gardening. She lives in Germany, I live here. She has a Beacon Hill dollhouse that she’s working on (jealous!) and an incredible studio space. Wait until you see how many putz sheep she has! Here’s the link to her account.

These quiet mornings with the tree lights glowing are truly lovely. A perfect way to start each day. Today, we’re supposed to get some snow showers mixed with rain, but I see no evidence of that yet. I wouldn’t mind some snow showers and some Christmas music today.

I didn’t do the things I had on my To Do list for yesterday, so today it is. It’s very cold here, but it won’t take long.

The next thing on the agenda for the dollhouse is laying the wood floor. It’s tedious, so I have to be in the right kind of mood. Then the windows and the molding around the windows.

This is Don’s recording studio. He and his friend Dan have been collaborating once again. Dan lives in Connecticut, so the collaboration is a virtual one. Don records the guitar and vocal and Dan lays in other tracks from his house. All this is done via Garage Band on the Mac. This time, they’re doing it for the joy of it, not to perform anything live or record a CD. Don says to tell you he’ll have a single out soon, and when it’s done, I’ll put the link here. It will be free.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Day Two Hundred Seventy

December 8, 2020 at 10:11 am by Claudia

Boy, I had a bout of sadness this morning. I’d been thinking about Scoutie and Winston and Riley. Don and I were remembering how much Scoutie loved to be in on the opening of gifts and that Winston used sit in front of our San Diego fireplace staring at his stocking because he could smell the rubber/vinyl of the toys that were hidden inside. He’d sit there for an hour – staring.

Then I thought about my parents and brother and how much I missed them.

Sometimes it comes over you in a wave.

Last week, I was chatting with my favorite dealer Sydney, of Fox Run Antiques. (Source of the egg cup cubby, the vintage dollhouse in the kitchen, many butter pats and countless other things including putz sheep.) I asked her if she had any putz sheep this year and she said she did but she wasn’t going to display them because they’re fragile and people steal them. They are indeed fragile. But stealing? So sad.

She sent me some photos of them and I picked out two, which she dropped off at a local antique barn where she has a booth. I paid for them over the phone and on Friday morning, Don waited in the car while I ran into the shop, picked up the bag, said hello to the owner, and immediately ran out again. I haven’t been in an antique shop since March and oh, how I wanted to wander and look and pick up things – especially at Christmas time!

But I didn’t stay. Because that would be foolish. Sigh. Someday.

You know I love to rescue things and both of these sheep have some damage. They needed a home.

A petite putz sheep, with a little stain on the fleece, and the ubiquitous broken ears – that happens a lot with putz sheep. They can break quite easily. My friend Helga, who lives in Germany, actually repairs and replaces parts on her putz sheep. She has a large collection of them, including putz goats and black sheep!)

The other is now the tallest sheep in my collection.

He has a wonky back leg, his fleece is stained, his ears are broken, and the beautiful eye you see has worn away on the other side of his face.

Some of my sheep are in fairly pristine condition. Others are damaged and worn.

All are welcome.

I’ll try to take a panoramic photo of all of them on the mantel above my desk.

We have to do a bit of work outside today. I’m hanging our outdoor lights, we’re storing more things in the shed, and I have to empty a few more pots that now hold dead plants.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
