Day Twenty-Seven

April 9, 2020 at 9:39 am by Claudia

It’s a rainy day, with high winds coming in the afternoon that will be in evidence through tomorrow morning.

You know how much I dislike high winds.

Sigh.

We went to our storage facility yesterday and retrieved the porch cushions, chairs, etc. Without the color of potted plants, I really needed to see some color elsewhere on the porch. It looks better now.

We were feeling blue most of the day yesterday. John Prine’s death hit us hard, especially Don. This morning, we played some of his songs – sung by him – and were able to smile.

By the way, I’ve lost work because of this whole thing. I was due to work with Darko on a production of Candide  at the Goodspeed Opera House some time this summer. But they’ve cancelled Candide.  I was really looking forward to it, not the least because I need the work.  And I love to work with Darko. Ah, well.

More egg cups:

Two morning glory egg cups found at the Flea Market in Paris, two wooden egg cups, a flowery egg cup that I found in a local antique shop, a delft egg cup given to me by my Mom, a green/white egg cup – one of the first I ever purchased, and another Delft egg cup in the form of a chicken.

A very worn and old red transferware egg cup found at the flea market in Paris, my pair of Beatles egg cups found at Abbey Road Studios in London, a Hankscraft egg cup, a chicken coming out of an egg, and my most recent purchase, a Jadeite egg cup.

My four Harlequin double egg cups – made by Homer Laughlin, they are the sister pattern of Fiesta.

More tomorrow, though we’re winding down.

Don is getting more produce from our very safe produce stand this morning.

Happy Thursday.

Day Twenty-Six

April 8, 2020 at 9:44 am by Claudia

We woke to the news of John Prine’s death from COVID-19. Needless to say, this is a sad and quiet household this morning. This damned virus is taking so many people.

If you’ve never listened to John Prine, listen to Hello in There, and Angel from Montgomery  for starters. Then listen to When I Get to Heaven  on his latest album, The Tree of Forgiveness, which is on our turntable and has been for a few days. With those three songs, you’ll know his heart, his compassion, his fight for the underdog, and his quirky and wonderful sense of humor.

You are in Heaven now, John Prine. Rest in Peace.

More egg cups.

A rooster from California Pottery (with original sticker), more Walking Ware, two dogs holding up an egg cup, a bunny rabbit, a duck, a pig with an egg cup on his back, cottage ware, a wood/porcelain egg cup (from my mom), a chick emerging from an egg (also from Mom), a pig getting ready to dine on an egg (from Tiffany), two tiny chicks on a teeter-totter, Mama and baby, a square cup from Prague (Don got it for me when he was there), a beautiful flowered egg cup from France, a goose pulling an egg cup cart, a little chick.

More tomorrow.

We watched the Finale of Schitt’s Creek  last night and the special that followed. I’ll miss it so. I woke up thinking about it and the message it sends of inclusivity and community. I’m tempted to start from the beginning and watch the entire series again. Thank you, Dan Levy and Eugene Levy. What a gift you’ve given us.

We cleared two more beds yesterday. My back is complaining a bit, but I am taking it more slowly this year. That has helped. And Don has helped, as well. There may be a trip to the storage facility today for cushions, Adirondack chairs, etc. We’ll see.

Stay home. Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Day Twenty-Five

April 7, 2020 at 9:45 am by Claudia

We’re heading toward 30 days here at the cottage. It doesn’t seem real, does it?

More of eggcups-on-parade: my second Snow White, a bunny, two lustreware egg cups (I have a smaller one somewhere with a thin strip of blue at the rim), another lustreware cup with a brown bear, an Emma Bridgewater cup from London, Walking Ware from Carlton/England, lovely motto ware cup from Devon, a Holt Howard rooster, blue and white transferware, a tiny bunny cup and an art deco plastic cup from Paris, a flowered egg cup from Paris, a rooster cup, a face cup, another rooster cup, a brown Mason’s Vista transferware cup, and a chick emerging from an egg from Portugal.

More tomorrow.

I cleaned out two of the garden beds yesterday, raking out the leaves and debris. Then Don raked all of it onto a tarp and made several trips to the refuse pile (very helpful.) I’m going to do two more today, as we have some rain coming on Thursday. It felt so good to be out there working – to finally get a jump on all the cleanup that must happen before I can do anything else.

I felt my shoulders relax. Those endorphins kicked in.

Then I came in, showered, ate some lunch and watched more of the 2019 episodes of Gardener’s World. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again – that show is so calming. My blood pressure must surely drop as soon as I hear the theme music and Monty Don’s voice. Heavenly. I’m almost done with all the shows I never got to last year and then I’ll start watching this year’s episodes – only 3 so far.

Here’s a question for you. How are you getting plants, soil, mulch, etc., for your gardens? I must admit I’m not sure how I’m going to handle that but it needs to be handled soon – in the next week or so. Any suggestions? I’m thinking our local nursery – which is the same farm stand that Don went to last week (they were highly organized) – might have some new protocol in place for plant shopping. I’d love to hear what you’ve encountered in your neck of the woods.

Still reading and loving This Rough Magic. Still watching old Cheers  episodes. Let’s see, what else? I ordered stamps online yesterday. Everything that was routine now has to be handled differently. I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re spending more money than usual in our efforts to make sure we have everything we need on hand.  I can’t say that for sure. Since we can’t just drop by the store for a few items, we tend to buy a lot in one order, trying to anticipate anything that might be needed. Sigh.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
