Well a lot has happened in the past 24 hours. My friends who work on Broadway are all out of work for at least the next month, and by that I mean not only actors, but ushers and front of house staff, dressers, props, all crew members, stage managers, orchestra members. Regional theaters are closing productions and in some cases, the rest of their season. Regional theaters are already hurting, this could ruin some. Independent bookshops are actively worried about their survivability. All small businesses are worried, in fact. Though I know the impact will be far and wide, in businesses, trade, schools closing, museums and theme parks, and on and on, I’m speaking to what I know; theater, books, music.

Tours will be cancelled. My friend Noble, who is touring in The King’s Speech, is now out of work. It was just about to open at Hartford Stage. I haven’t heard about the Anastasia  tour yet, but I’m sure they’ll have to hit pause, at the very least.

I know each of you knows of other businesses that will be impacted.

It’s really a nightmare, isn’t it?

Consider ordering from small businesses if you can over the next month.

Just when we thought we had done everything to prepare to stay in place, we have to go out to get Don’s prescriptions and grab a few things at our local supermarket. As I said to Don this morning, “After today, can we please  stay home?” We’re using hand sanitizer, washing our hands, and using disinfectant wipes on door handles and shopping carts. But I’m over this now. Time to stay home.

I finished The Pursuit of Love  by Nancy Mitford. Simply wonderful; very funny and moving. Going back to The Hypnotist  by Lars Kepler seems a little jarring. I have to take a few deep breaths before I move on.

Other than that, my friends  – and ‘that’ is a lot –  we’re doing what everyone else is doing.

Let me share this quote from Shelf Awareness, which is all about books and booksellers. Organizers of The Bay Area Book Festival, which has just been cancelled, said this:

During this tough time, let’s all remember one tried-and-true way to promote wellness. Stress and anxiety are terrible for our immune systems, and there’s a proven antidote for that: read a book. In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty, it can help to spend half an hour escaping with a novel, feeding your soul with poetry, or finding companionship in a memoir.

I suspect I’m preaching to the choir. Grab a book, make a cup of tea or coffee, and read.

Happy Friday.

What Are You Reading?

March 12, 2020 at 9:39 am by Claudia

Keeping things positive here on the blog as we (meaning all of us) are surrounded by fear and worry at the moment.

So let’s see, what should I talk about? I’m reading Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love  and enjoying it immensely. I’m also reading Lars Kepler’s The Hypnotist. I rarely do this, but I’m going back and forth between the two. We’re watching Season 3 of Babylon Berlin  for a second time. I’m currently drinking my second cup of Peet’s French Roast and writing this post rather hurriedly, so we can go out and buy some of the Gardein Brand Frozen Vegan Entrees that we use a lot in our dinners (Don always adds ingredients to concoct his “specialities.”) Time to restock before we officially lay very low over the next weeks.

I heard more Peepers last night. Not as many as there will be in a few weeks, but they’re there. I also heard the bullfrog that lives in the pond. All signs of Spring. I’m looking forward to starting cleanup outside, but realistically, that won’t happen for a couple of weeks. I want to make sure there are no more nights where the temps drop below freezing.

Since I plan on doing a lot of reading over the next month, it seems a good time to ask my favorite question: What are you reading?

Stay safe, my friends.

Happy Thursday.

Potpourri on Wednesday

March 11, 2020 at 10:30 am by Claudia

Weathered pine floors courtesy of Scout and Riley.

• Last night we were watching the primary results and I saw this on the screen:

65+

For the first time, I really got that I am in now in this demographic. You know how something suddenly hits you in the gut and the mind at the same time? That’s what happened to me. That demographic used to mean somebody else, some other group of people…old people. And now I’m there. I still don’t feel like I’m that old. I think of myself as someone at least a decade younger. How can I be 67?

Gulp. A big dose of reality last night.

• Also: Spring is officially here. I heard Peepers last night from our neighbor’s yard! When the Peepers start and the groundhogs come out of hibernation, it is most definitely SPRING. Huzzah!

• We, like most people I suspect, have been stocking up on supplies given the nature of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19.) Currently, New York has 173 cases statewide, with many more people under voluntary quarantine. We bought a bunch of canned goods and other supplies last week and we’re going to take an inventory today to determine what additional supplies we need. I know you know the drill, wash your hands, try to avoid crowds or big events, use hand sanitizer, etc. With the news that the White House nixed a CDC request to alert those over 60 not to fly, we are more than uneasy about anything coming (or not coming in this case) from anywhere but the CDC and NIH. And in our case, our state government, which seems to be on top of things.

Anyway, I’m not actively worried, but I sure as heck am going to keep a low profile. I shared a little thought yesterday on IG Stories:

“Not to make light of the Coronavirus, but “Social Distancing” sounds like heaven to an introvert like me.”

• I want to share a podcast I discovered yesterday. It’s called Diving In. Two friends from Australia share their thoughts on what they’re reading, favorite books, and whatever else is striking their fancy. They’re wonderful. The latest episode is the one I listened to – all about the Mitford sisters and Nancy Mitford’s novels. Since I’m currently reading Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love, I found this podcast very timely. I’m charmed by the hosts, who love reading, giggle a lot, and know their stuff.

I saw it mentioned on Instagram by a book lover that I follow, so I immediately subscribed. I have several podcasts that I follow, though I don’t stop and listen to them often enough. I’ll try to put together a list for you for a future post.

• Off to take an inventory of our supplies and head to the store with Don.

Take care of yourselves, my friends.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
