Flowers, Porch & Apple Trees

May 2, 2017 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Thank you for all the wonderful comments yesterday. Well, make that every day. And don’t worry about commenting, I was referring to the times when a frequent commenter suddenly disappears and I find myself worrying about them.

I love that you’re there, silent or not. Thank you for that.

This is a weed that is popping up all over the property. I don’t know its name, but it’s awfully pretty! Such a pretty dash of yellow. Between these and the dandelions, there’s quite a bit of yellow around these days.

Wild honeysuckle. If there’s a scent, it’s so faint that I’m missing it. This bush is right by the shed.

Just because they don’t last very long. So there will be lilacs here as long as I can still take pictures of them!

Yesterday, I drove north to visit another HomeGoods store (looking for more cushions for the porch) and I marveled at the seemingly endless variations of green everywhere. Truly astounding! I did find some more cushions and I’m awaiting the bench cushion I ordered for the glider to be delivered. Once I get that, and once I put the other Adirondack together, I’ll show you what I’ve been doing. It’s all about color and lots of it. I’ve been texting photos to Don and he’s very excited. Nothing earth shattering, by the way, but rather a sprucing up of the sitting area on the porch. It needed it.

We are known for apple orchards around here and everywhere you travel there are apple trees in bloom. It was gloomy yesterday as I took this photo, so I brightened it up a bit. This particular road has row after row of apple trees and it’s quite stunning. I’ll try to get more photos when and if the sun comes out again!

I’m going to sow my morning glory, moonflower and zinnia seeds today. Then to the nursery to buy some mulch and some impatiens.

Happy Tuesday.

Potpourri on Monday

May 1, 2017 at 10:05 am by Claudia

• Gray day yesterday. So far: equally gray day today. Friday’s warm temps dropped twenty degrees by yesterday. This year’s erratic spring weather is consistent in its inconsistency.

• First up: I’ve decided to let the cedar Adirondack chairs weather naturally and not  paint them. After reading up on the care of cedar – staining and adding a protective coat every year, or painting and having to repaint every year – those options looked less and less attractive to yours truly. For goodness sake, our kitchen is in desperate need of a paint job and I still haven’t got around to it! Painting and me = oil and water. My only hope for painting the kitchen is to enlist my husband, who, as you well know, is currently far away.

I did buy some cushions yesterday and am going to look for more today. Also on the shopping list: mulch and more mulch, top soil, and potting soil.

And plants to put in the pots.

• The daffs/narcissus in the woods. I have the same kind of narcissus in my garden, and it’s just about ready to bloom. Interestingly, the yellow daffodils on the edge of the woods didn’t bloom this year. They are usually the first to bloom and they came up earlier than usual because of the abnormally warm temps, so I’m wondering if the extreme temperature fluctuations we had this spring were the culprit. I think they were.

So delicately beautiful.

• The catalpa, always the last of the trees to leaf out, is just beginning to show some baby leaves. I love this tree, home to giant heart-shaped leaves and flowers in June, as well as to our resident honeybees.

• Vicki was noting the other day in a comment the disappointment she feels when a favorite blog suddenly fades away; more and more time between posts, less and less substance, less of the author’s voice, etc. I have felt the same disappointment when a blogger either stops blogging or lets months go by between posts. Some of those bloggers have taken to Instagram because, I presume, it’s quicker and easier to post a photo and a short caption. Of course, the conversation that a blog affords between a blogger and the readers can still exist on Instagram, but, let’s face it, it’s shorter, less revealing, and requires less commitment.

I like Instagram and I post there. But for me, it could never take the place of sharing my thoughts and ideas and the story of our life here at the cottage. There’s depth and then there’s a sound bite. But, I equally understand the demands of daily life, especially if one is younger and raising a family. Finding the time to blog can be very hard, indeed. And, I also understand those bloggers that have been blogging for a number of years running out of steam. Boy, do I understand that! It can be daunting and frustrating and it takes a lot  of time. Fortunately for me, I still enjoy it and I remain committed. Someday that might change. But for now, I’m good.

Instagram affords a lot of people the space to share their lives in a more manageable, less time consuming way.

The same holds true for readers as well. I have longtime readers and newer readers and, along the way, some readers who have been fairly consistent commenters will just disappear. Some time will pass and I will suddenly think, “Where is so-and-so?” Just as you might worry about a blogger if they suddenly stop blogging, I worry about a reader who stops commenting (though there is certainly no commenting requirement around here!)

Sometimes I write to the commenter to ask if everything is okay. Mostly, I try not to take it personally and wish them well. Maybe they’re tired of the blog, or of me, or maybe I’ve said something that didn’t sit right. I have no way of knowing; all I can be is myself.

Just as I’ve had readers disappear, I’ve certainly moved on from some blogs that I used to read all the time and I am guilty of not commenting as often as I used to. I guess it’s the way of the world, or at least my world, at present.

Anyway, all this is to say that I understand. We develop a relationship with blogs over the years. We come to know the bloggers and care about them. I come to know you and care about you. But, just as life itself involves friendships/relationships that remain consistent through the years or eventually fade away as our needs evolve and change, the same holds true for bloggers and readers.

But it does make one sigh, doesn’t it?

When you find a lilac shaped like a heart, you have to take a picture of it.

Happy Monday.

A Discovery in the Boxwood

April 30, 2017 at 9:53 am by Claudia

On Friday, I was doing something or other near one of the boxwoods and I heard a frantic flapping of wings. I thought that there must have been a bird on the bush, startled by my sudden presence.

Yesterday, I was weeding and, at one point, ended up in the same area. Again, the frantic movement of a bird. Curious, I walked over to the boxwood, looked down, and saw this:

I gasped. Luckily, I had my iPhone in my back pocket, so I quickly took some pictures.

If that isn’t one of the most beautiful sights one can see, I don’t know what is. A miracle, tucked down inside a boxwood.

I was filled with wonder at this beauty, this perfectly made nest with five blue eggs.

After I tended to some other things, I carefully and quietly walked toward the boxwood (but stayed far away enough that I figured all would be well) and again, Mama flew off. Since I had been planning to mow the front yard, I decided I should get on it right away, starting with the area of grass right in front of the boxwoods that are at the front of the house. I had scared Mama enough and I wanted to mow while she was still watching from the neighboring maple tree so that she could relax for the rest of the day.

Since this is right in front of the porch, I will have to be very careful. Later in the day, I was sitting on the glider, not making a sound, when Mama started screeching at me. Oh boy. I got the message and went inside.

I don’t want to get too involved with watching the eggs hatch. I did that years ago while working on a job in Wisconsin (the nest was right outside my door) and I was stressed the whole time. I worry too much.

I also put together one of the Adirondack chairs.

It took me a long time and it wasn’t easy. It’s really a two person job, and since there’s just me, myself, and I, many curse words were uttered. Interestingly this didn’t seem to bother the nesting robin (I put it together on the porch). By the time I finished, my hands were sore! Still are.

I imagine the second one will be less problematic.

I’m thinking I’ll paint them as the natural wood is very light in color and I don’t really want to go the stain route.

And I’m thinking that this color (used on the mini adirondacks in Don’s studio) would be perfect. (Note that there just happen to be mini boxwoods in this photo.)

I asked Don whether we should go with white or this green and he enthusiastically went for the green. There you go.

A splash of color in the midst of all the weathered teak will be perfect.

Today, a trip to the store for some supplies. Tomorrow, I’ll buy mulch and potting soil and I’ll soak my morning glory seeds and get ready to plant them this week.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
