Adventures in Torrential Rain: Sump Pump Edition

April 7, 2017 at 9:12 am by Claudia

Egg cups for Friday. The angry looking chick on the left was a gift from my mom. Two beautiful transferware egg cups on the left and right. The egg cup with the feet is Walking Ware from England. A beautiful blue ironstone egg cup in the middle – old and very heavy. An egg cup from Prague – a gift from my husband, along with the handprinted egg (also from Prague.) The bear egg cup was a recent gift from my dear friend Lynne and Sean. And the wood and porcelain egg cup was a gift from my Mom. The painting is by my friend Christie Repasy.

Yesterday’s “adventure” – We had torrential rains yesterday, as did a lot of the country. Endless, most of the day, and at times, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Late in the afternoon, while listening to something on the radio, I realized I was hearing something loud. It was the sump pump, which wasn’t stopping after pumping water out of our 1891 basement (entered from the outside, and sort of spooky).

So, I grabbed my rain slicker, put on my muck boots and braved the outside. I moved the stones that hold the tarp down (which covers the old wooden door) and I carefully went down the stairs and sure enough, it was the sump pump. I got it to stop. Then I stayed down there for quite a while to see if it would reengage and stop on its own. It did. There was a lot of water in the basement.

Back up the steps. Closed the door. Put the tarp back over the door. Went inside. Took off boots. Happened to look through the kitchen window and realized that water was flooding the street from the section of culvert that is just to the left of our driveway. Amazingly, a big sofa cushion that I had seen way down the street (apparently fell off someone’s car) earlier in the day, was now being sucked into the culvert drain and the water had nowhere to go but the street. It was way too big to actually move through that pipe, so it just stayed there, blocking the path of the water.

Back into my slicker and boots. I walked down the driveway, figured out where I needed to stand to reach the cushion, and, in the midst of rush hour traffic, grabbed the cushion. The suction was so strong that I could hardly move it, but after several tugs, I managed to pull it away from the culvert. It was so heavy and so wet that I had to drag it to the side of the mailbox, where it still is. (Not only is it big and awkward, it’s ugly.)

Back inside. It wasn’t long before the damn sump pump got stuck once again. This happened at least four more times. I don’t know whether it’s starting to fail or if something was in the way that kept the float from dropping. I even walked around to the side of the house to see if the pipe was clogged. No. I unplugged it, but then thought the better of it as the rain had stopped and the amount of water headed toward the sump pump had greatly decreased.

I’ll have our oil guy, who is also a plumber, look at it.

Oy. What a day.

Don, this is why I need you here.

Happy Friday.

Green In the Midst of Brown

April 6, 2017 at 10:05 am by Claudia

We had periods of sun yesterday, which was much appreciated as today and tomorrow are going to be rainy. I grabbed the camera as I went outside to check out the garden beds.

I haven’t done any cleanup as of yet. It’s been too cold, rainy, snowy, windy… you name it. I hope to start in next week. So checking out the beds involves seeing what’s poking through the leaf mulch.

Hyacinths. Last year, they didn’t bloom. Let’s see what happens this year.

The Oriental Poppy never came up last year. I was so delighted to see it once again. I wonder if that had to do with a relatively warm winter in 2016. This year we had a very cold winter, lots of snow…and here it is.

Daylilies.

I also saw sedum and lamium and buds on the lilacs and the beginnings of buds on the trees. I can’t wait to get out there and clear the beds. With such a volatile March and temperatures plunging to below freezing, I left the beds alone and let the leaf mulch stay.

Once I’m really sure it’s okay out there, I’ll move my indoor impatiens back to the porch. But I’m very protective of them, so it will be a while yet.

Changing the subject: Have you heard of Book Depository? It’s an online source out of England and Australia – sort of like Amazon. I’ve known of it a long time, but I have only used it very recently. I’m a fan of Jane Casey’s mysteries and I follow her on Twitter. I noticed that she had a new book in her Maeve Kerrigan series coming out in Britain, so I asked her when it was coming out here. Not until July. The wait seemed intolerable to yours truly. But, through Amazon (a fluke?) I found I could get it through Book Depository. So I did.

Just the other day, after having read lots of tweets about the new John Connolly being released this week in England, I checked out Amazon. Only pre-order – It’s not coming out here for several months. And there was no option for Book Depository. So I went directly to the Book Depository site and there it was. I ordered it and…they don’t charge for shipping! Less expensive than Amazon! It will be here in about a week. This may not be for everyone but for someone like me who reads books by several authors on the other side of the pond, this eliminates that pesky wait for the U.S. release of a book.

Egg cups for your viewing pleasure. They’re all favorites, but I especially love the one on the left. Oh wait, I also love the Scottie and the two dogs holding up the egg cup and the rabbit  and the pig and the chicks. This is my problem. I love them all, especially the figurals – that’s what this type of egg cup is.

Happy Thursday.

Rabbits and Egg Cups

April 5, 2017 at 9:40 am by Claudia

First bunny sighting: yesterday morning. Though it was still too darkish outside to get a good photo, I stood by the kitchen sink and smiled.

Bunnies. Spring is here.

This morning, I stood in front of the china cabinet in the kitchen trying to figure out where to display the plate and saucer I bought at Fish’s Eddy. And, as happens with all of us, I really took in the things I have stashed in the cabinet. I’m so used to walking by it and not noticing…you know what I mean.

I had forgotten about this lovely Emma Bridgewater bowl:

I echo the sentiment: Don’t let the farmer have his fun, fun, fun. Run rabbit, run, run, run.

(I just read a mystery where the farmers routinely shot rabbits and I had to skip over those paragraphs. Do Not Like. The mystery was excellent, by the way – The Dry.)

I can’t remember whether I bought this in England or found it somewhere stateside. Most of my Bridgewater was purchased in England – London, actually. I carefully packed it all and brought it back home – this would be about 16 years ago. But I vaguely remember finding a piece here. Was this it? I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that I really love it.

So, in honor of the bunny sighting and the bunnies and baby bunnies to come, I share this with you.

I’m back to limiting my news and Twitter time. I don’t want to be constantly angry or fearful. It’s a delicate balance, as every day brings more alarming news. But I can oh-so-easily fall in to the proverbial rabbit hole and become obsessed by what is happening every minute. So. A bit of twitter. Maybe  The Randi Rhodes show in the afternoon. And Rachel. That’s it.

It will be easier to strike this balance when I can get outside and start my garden cleanup. It’s too wet right now. Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to start on that next week.

More egg cups. And The Lamb With the Party Hat. And a little thimble with a cow on top (a gift from my friend Susi in Amsterdam.)

The egg cup with the two yellow chicks is a Fanny Farmer egg cup and it was the start of this whole collection. My godparents gave it to me when I was a wee thing and I kept it for decades. One day, in 2001 or 2002, I read an article in Martha Stewart Living about collecting egg cups and there, in one of the photos, was this egg cup! That was it. I was off and running.

The sun is coming out. More rain tomorrow. I will be traveling into NYC on Saturday to catch the matinee of Anastasia. I need to check in and take some notes.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
