Fabrics in a Box

March 18, 2017 at 9:48 am by Claudia

I decided to stop (at least for a while) my monthly subscription to SquintBox. It’s been wonderful, but I feel that I have all I need at the moment. I’m not working on anything, have no place to put the little minis except in storage, so…that’s it for a while.

As I was looking at quilters’ blogs the other day, I came across a modern quilter who was writing about a modern fabric subscription box called Culcita. I was very intrigued. You can set it up in any number of ways and I chose the bimonthly subscription. Why? I could use some modern fabrics in my stash, I don’t have a quilt store nearby, and I thought this would be the perfect way to gather some fabrics I wouldn’t see otherwise. So, every other month, I’ll get a little box from Culcita.

Like this one:

It arrived in my mailbox yesterday (2 day priority mail!)

12 fat quarters; this month from Art Gallery Fabrics’ Take Shape line.

Lovely. Beautifully presented and such fun to open.

Included was a lovely handwritten welcome note, and a card highlighting this month’s fabric line.

Also included was a quilt pattern and two labels. Oh, and a fortune cookie with the fortune reading:

Eat, Sleep, Sew. Any questions?

This isn’t a sponsored post or anything like that. I’m just writing about it because it’s such a neat idea. Subscription boxes are the new thing, for books, minis, makeup, food, you name it. I’m not one who signs up for these things as a rule, but this particular subscription has a very fair price and I figure I can handle it every other month.

Okay. Now I have to run some errands before it starts snowing. Again. Only a couple of inches, but come on! Enough already. We’re both in prep mode, gathering together what we need to pack. In Don’s case, it’s obviously more complicated. I’m only gone for 6 days.

Happy Saturday.

Catching Up

March 17, 2017 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Can I just say that Wednesday was a sucky day? It was.

It started when we bundled up to start snowblowing (Don) and shoveling snow (me). Don fired up the snowblower. It just couldn’t handle the snow (something I’ve since heard from many people as to this particular blizzard/snow.) He’d get it going and eventually the wheels would spin around and it was impossible to get it through the snow. We had almost two feet and it was very heavy.

So. What do we do now? We have a long driveway that goes uphill. Don called a couple of our neighbors and one suggested a guy who lives down the street. These neighbors were out of town and he was supposed to plow their driveway while they were gone. Price quoted was fifty dollars. We were wary of trying to clear all that snow by ourselves, so we said yes. I went upstairs to do some work. He came and went. When I looked out the bedroom window, I started cursing like a sailor. He had plowed the driveway – badly – and simply stopped. There was now a pile of snow at least five feet high blocking in our cars. I ran downstairs, went outside and asked Don what the heck happened. Apparently his truck (a small one) kept sliding around on the driveway so he really couldn’t do the job. The driveway looked terrible and there was huge pile of snow at the top of the driveway, along with the wall blocking our cars in.

So for the next three hours, Don worked the snowblower (I finally had to make him go in because I was worried about him) and I slowly cleared a five foot tall wall of snow that was about 8 feet long. I cannot tell you how exhausting it was. We took breaks, of course. But it was awful – the worst snow cleanup I can remember.

Yesterday, I had to slowly maneuver my car out of there (his ‘plowing’ effectively eliminated the area that we use to back up when we’re going to go down the driveway) so that Don could get out. It was a pain. Then it took me two tries to get back up the driveway. Meanwhile my neighbor (now back home) called out to me, apologizing about her recommendation. He’d done a bad job on their driveway, too, and there she was shoveling and shoveling and trying to dig her car out and make the driveway passable. To be fair to our neighbor with the plow, he has a small truck and I think it just couldn’t handle snow of this magnitude.

Lesson learned. We’ve had our drive plowed exactly twice since we moved here and both times it was a bust. Of course, this was an extreme event and most snowfalls are far easier to deal with.

But it’s done and salting helped with any extra snow and ice and we’re okay. Tired, but okay.

Don decided to leave on Monday and I can’t tell you how that changed my mood. I was thinking that he was going to leave today but he worked on his itinerary and route yesterday and decided Monday was the day. An enormous relief as he needs to rest before he goes and I get to have a couple more days with him before he has to leave. We’ll both be leaving on Monday – Don for the West Coast and me for some work in NYC.

After two days of no mail delivery, our mail was delivered yesterday. A ‘new’ Nancy Drew arrived, The Mystery at Lilac Inn. Isn’t this a great cover? I love the period clothes and the two shady men in the other room. There’s our Nancy, listening in as she does some sleuthing.

Speaking of Nancy Drew, I picked this up from our post office box – a gift from reader Mary:

Mary is doing some purging and she found this set of Nancy Drew postcards – all of them with different cover art. She wrote to ask if I would like them, and of course, I said yes. Thank you so much, Mary! I love them.

Now we have to get ready for our respective adventures coming up next week.

Happy Friday.

Review & Giveaway: Big Ideas for Small Spaces

March 16, 2017 at 9:31 am by Claudia

Recently, I was approached by the generous folks at Firefly Books. They asked if they might send me three different books on the subject of gardening that I would review and share with you. Being an avid gardener, I immediately said yes! In the next couple of weeks, I am going to highlight and review each of the books and give you the chance to win a copy.

First up: Big Ideas for Small Spaces: Creative Ideas and 30 Projects for Balconies, Roof Gardens, Windowsills andTerraces – written by Kay Maguire and Tony Woods.

This book is so inventive and, at the same time, so practical. It’s set up in five sections: Garden Anywhere which gives information about microclimates, wind, shade, community; Where Does Your Garden Grow? where raised beds, container gardening, windowsills, and more are explored; Think Outside the Box, covering color and lighting and focal points; The Projects – 30 projects you can make on your own; and Get Growing, all about supplies and plants and problems and solutions. There’s also a Glossary and list of Resources at the end.

I so enjoy seeing all the creative ideas for gardening in a small space. I’ve lived in my share of small spaces over my lifetime – some minuscule, some on the larger end of small. When I was an apartment dweller, I had many houseplants and I loved them, but this book shows me I could have done even more to bring plants into my apartment-dwelling life.

What if you are limited to a small balcony or terrace? Maybe only a windowsill (been there)? You’ll find lots of ideas here.

Gutter planters – such a great idea! As with every project, there is a list of materials needed, the steps are clearly outlined, there’s always a tip and the photography is beautiful and highlights the project steps perfectly.

I love this idea – a hanging screen! If my porch wasn’t subject to so much wind, I’d do this in a second! But think about defining a space, whether it’s a balcony or a terrace, with this ‘screen’ of thriving plants. Isn’t that a neat idea?

There’s so much more: a succulent picture frame, pocket planters, balcony rail planters, pond in a pot, green roof, paving-slab garden and lots more – 30 in total.

I’m living vicariously through this book as there is 22 inches of snow on the ground outside my little cottage. It’s inspiring. It will inspire you. It comes to you via the authors and The Royal Horticultural Society – and Firefly Books, of course.

I recommend it highly – anytime, of course – but especially as we wait for Spring to arrive!

One of you will win a copy of this book! Just leave a comment on this post and I will draw the winner’s name on Saturday evening. Good luck!

Thank you to Firefly Books for generously donating these books!

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
